ust seems like an exabition to me. There wasnt much countering. The monk never cut off the distanse of the TKD guy. Its almost as if he said. Yeah go ahead an throw some kicks ill just block or slightly move back...

Emm... tournament styles are kinda like that.

It's not really showing off the style, rather the conentration level. You're looking for points here.

There are lots of prohibited moves and lots of rounds like you saw.

In a real fight...well both styles can get very nasty like all martial arts.

This is like kitty gloves on.

Though in terms of style, Tae Kwon Do is a very offensive type, as you're realistically suppose to get a clean hit oon your opponent within the 1st 10 seconds.

Kung fu is...lots of styles, so you really can't pin it, but, countering is really important in most of them...

which is kinda hard from this video as you're put in the worse situation, a long range fast fighter, with set boarder lines.

You can't really counter when you get pushed out before you can find your opening. It's not that he was holding back, it was that his hands were tied.

This is definitelly Tae Kwon do (strike form) bias. Kung fu would give you a much larger area. I'm guessing since it's korean?

Re: Shaoilin Kung Fu Vs. Tae Kwon Do.

kuu from the above post got it right.

For example, at the end of the video, the TKD fighter front round kick -> the monk block -> counter with spinning-backhand -> follow up with spinning kick. Look at the long distant that counter spinning-backhand that covers. Long distant means more time is needed for the monk's strike to reach the target, which means it gives more time for the TKD fighter to evade if his kick is evaded/blocked/countered.

The different between the kicks in traditional style TKD and competition style TKD is traditional style focus more on power, while competition style focus on speed and range.

The TKD fighter in the video flow lot of found kicks at the waist level because it has maximum range. The intention is to keep distant away the monk. If we compare the distant from the feet (on the floor) to the waist, and from the feet (on the floor) to the head, the distant between the feet and the waist is shorter, which means the kick will reach faster at the waist than the head.

Longer kick distant means less opening for enemy to counterattack. Faster kick means the kick is harder for the enemy to grip the foot/leg. Overall reduced the risk of using kicks.

The TKD fighter knows his strength and weakness of his kicks and tactics. The option of the monk is exchanging attack in long range (if the monk has longer reach or faster speed, the monk may win), or getting close/mid range (which the TKD fighter is trying to prevent).

Overall the fighters in the video show very good sparring skill.

Re: Shaoilin Kung Fu Vs. Tae Kwon Do.

I think it's obvious it was an exhibition match, tournaments aren't so friendly.

The point is even if it was an exhibition the monk was putting a lot less effort on his attacks/block than the TKD guy, the difference in ability was too pronounced.

In real combat it's the person rather than the martial art what defines who wins and who loses, all martial arts can be devastating if the martial artist really wants to harm.

But mentality and concentration (and luck) play a huge role in deciding the outcome of a fight, techniques alone do nothing unless the fighter has the will for them to do what they are supposed to do.

That's one of the first things they teach you when you practice a martial art.
