Video was totally ruined by the Everyone Loves Kung Fu Fighting song. I don't know why everyone feels the need to use that song when someone is doing martial arts x_x It makes everything kinda corny

Both sides were very cautious, I don't think they were holding back (at least during the part it was shown in the video). Both of them did not score a clear hit in the video. They were just checking range.
To me it is like a typical Tae Kwon Do match: exchanging kicks in the long range.

Re: Shaoilin Kung Fu Vs. Tae Kwon Do.

Well, it looks like no one has any points yet--I didn't see a connection; however, since it's interdisciplinary, it is possible that it's an exhibition. Both of them throw some very big moves. I agree that it doesn't really look like anyone is holding back or has an advantage. Both fighters dodge everything (even though they do so differently) and perfrom aggressive attack series.

Shaolin Kung Fu has a habit of being very "flashy"--Kung Fu is a very beautiful, flowing martial art whereas Tae Kwon Do is more direct in it's application. Both are quite functional, of course.

I like the pre-Hollywood videos of Steven Segal like this one:

Just remember that being an "attacker" in an Aikido class is a "bad" position since Aikido revolves around redirecting attacks and is (IMO) the most purely defensive martial art. Take note that no one trys to kick him in the back of the head while he's throwing in the multiple attacker portions, but he does keep very good alignment with his opponents, not really giving much of a chance to do so without him at least knowing in advance.

It didn't look like either of them knew what they were doing until the monk flipped out, but if they're point sparring the other fighter was obviously inexperienced.

Most people don't "exchange kicks in the long range", you only see that in the video montages because punches aren't all that interesting.

The video is an exhibition. The TKD guy is most likely a black belt student and the monk is...

I assume he's referring to Venerable Master Shi Xing Hong, but not sure.

(This is simply stuff I dug up on the web). If the monk is in fact a venerable master of Kung Fu, then yes, he was most definitely holding back...

My favorite part, by the way, is at the end where the monk does a lightning fast side step charge (with no move at the end).

Apparently, VM Shi Xing Hong is the founder of a school of Shaolin Kung Fu (there are satellites taught by his students) and has developed a variation of the Tiger Form.

That is why I said it looks like a Tae Kwon Do match in the video... combination of mid kicks and high kicks, lack of hand strikes and low kicks.

Other type of match does not normally exchange kicks often, because hand techinque is easier to perform, faster and more efficient. If both hand strikes and kicks award the same points, then most likely hand strike is used more frequently.

A typical Tae Kwon Do match usually exchange kicks very frequently, because more point is awarded to kicks in Tae Kwon Do competition (referring to World Taekwondo Federation - Olympic rules for full contact competition).

For those who does not practice sparring, it does not look like either of the fighters know what they were doing.

There is a lot going on from the beginning to the end of the video clip.

Both fighters in the video are experienced. All their movements for the entire video are meaningful. No movement is wasted.

A full contact competition without protective armor like chest guard or helm is not a joke. Skill and experience are required.

Because nowadays kicks evolved from traditional styles, uses more body mass, use more muscles and more speed, it is more efficient to evade those kicks then blocking, especially for combinational kicks.

Both fighters in the video evade the combinational kicks just fine.

At the end of the video clip, both sides are still 50/50. What happened afterwards we don't know.

Re: Shaoilin Kung Fu Vs. Tae Kwon Do.

I'm going to stick with an Exhibition Match... I doubt there were any real points involved since it is unlikely that OTKD rules are applicable since Kung Fu is significantly different in style to TKD, so I'll bet they were basically showing off moves and trying to put on a good show. I wish the video wasn't so crappy...

The fact that it's a "montage" also lessens the significance. The maker of the clip only picked his favorite parts to put in--and none of them involve a connection. The last TKD match I went to, only lesser ranks were padded, Black Belts went no pads. I haven't watched any OTKD for a long time (I missed it last Olympics b/c I didn't have whatever channel it was on), but I seem to remember pads being used.

Punches aren't used less frequently than kicks, whether you're an Olympic stylist or otherwise. You're not going to get anywhere relying on kicks alone.

Both fighters in the video are experienced. All their movements for the entire video are meaningful. No movement is wasted.
Every kick was a wasted kick. The TKD fighter only throws one kick at a time most of the time, and to the waist no less. He throws multiples but hardly makes any contact whatsoever. You can see he's blatantly aiming for the other fighter's guards, which isn't going to get him anywhere.

The monk does what? Block? He moves forward, throws multiple kicks, and hits nothing. Why the hell would he throw a 540?

The source of this video is most questionable.

Notwithstanding the calibur of Spamfreefun.com... Neither one of the people who identified the monk as VM Shi Xing Hong was the original poster of the video.

Re: Shaoilin Kung Fu Vs. Tae Kwon Do.

Which technique is used during a tournment is decided by the rule of that tournment. TDK Olympic stylist use more kicks because the rule award more points to the kicks. The goal of the match is to win (score more points), not to kill the opponent.

The TKD fighter throw one kick at a time to check the monk's reaction:
Would the monk blocks? Would the monk step back? Step aside? Or will the monk counter with kicks or punches? How fast is the monk? How far is the monk is going to move?
How can you attack without knowing your opponent's next step is? Flowing random combinational kicks without a plan? Wait and see?

The monk is trying to read the TDK fighter's intention, and trying to counter attack.

Look at the steps when they evade the combination kicks. See how much effort is used? If the kicks are weak or no impacts, they won't retreat the way they do (stepped outside the ring/bound).

The kicks are evaded because both fighters evaded them skillfully, not because the kicks are intentionally missed the target.
