on a more serious note, why the hell do people make such a big deal about girl gamers? The girls who actually game (as in something other than barbies magical dreamhouse 2004) don't go around attention whoring for free loots.

I mean, christ, what's the big deal? So they have boobs... so do I. They aren't that great.

I think male gamers are attracted to female gamers for a few reasons.

For those of us over the age of say, 16, we've been around long enough to remember the days where online gaming (and gaming in general) was stereotyped as a geeky male obsession. The idea of women playing the same games we do was almost unheard of, and most women in society didn't understand our interests in the matter, as again it was a rather "unpopular" past time for those not capable in social settings. When we hear of a women playing things like an MMO, an FPS, a side scroller, a fighting (SC3 ftw) or an offline rpg with the same level of obsession we posses, we get excited, because finally there are women who understand our point of view. Finally, there are women who we can share our interest with, and not feel akward about our obsessions knowing that they share them to at least some degree.

Even if you don't remember those days, the fact remains that women gamers present us with the possibility of complete shared interest versus women who still think of computer/video games as lame socially outcast hobbies.

That brings up another point actually, the mindset of women who game versus those who do not. Being serious about being good and having fun at a video game requires someone to expend mental energy (versus physical for sports) and to get their thought process moving. It is because of this that you don't see too many airheads (of either gender) playing video games, in part due to the stigma but also due to inadequate mental capacity (note, airhead to me is someone who really would rather focus on the trendy than on the real world {and by real I mean actual, not that reality TV bullshit}, there are other mental issues that come into play when you refer to n00bs whose judgement is clouded, but they are by no means brainless). It is because of this mental exercise that for the most part, women (and men) who game with any seriousness actually have a mind of their own. Therefore, women gamers present us with someone who is intellectually stimulating, someone who won't restrict their conversation to makeup and clothes (as well as accessories).

When male gamers see women gamers, we see common interests, and at the very least a semi-enlightened mind who we can talk to comfortably about just about anything. In those ways, there creates an attraction that trancends what a person looks like, and if you think about it it is really quite obvious. How many times have you heard a women gamer refered to as "hawt" before any picture is ever shown? While the person saying that might not be aware of it, he is really admitting his attraction to your personality (as you would like to present it, and if you think that isn't real, then you need to look again, online personalities tend to be more real that those we show people in real life). Even after knowing what you look like, if the person has any kind of sense, they should realize that there are more important things in life than the superficial (sp?). The most important beauty is in the minds eye, because I could meet the most physically beautiful woman in the world, but if I can't talk about my interests and points of view to her because she doesn't undersand or doesn't care about those things, then she isn't very attractive at all.

I am a girl and I play. Actually, ffxi is the first video game that I have ever played of its kind. I have played tetris a couple of times and maybe some other crud when I was younger and at an arcade, but I never had game systems or anything. My husband started playing FFXI on his xbox and after watching him play I became interested. I play on my craptop.
I dont think anyone would look at me and think I play video games. I told some of the girls that I work with and they think it's funny. I have a developer who plays video games and shes cute too. I dont think it's a common girly thing to game. Most girls are too busy doing other stuff to really devote the time. Sometimes its hard to balance, because you have shopping, working out, cleaning the house, cooking, taking care of animals/children, and working to consider. I have noticed that I dont get as much sleep
