Re: Crikey! The Croc. Hunter is dead!

I was never a big fan of Steve Irwin but it is sad to hear of his death.

I first heard about his death while I was playing this game. My LS was talking about it so I had to check it out.

Kill many and your a conquerer
Kill them all... your a God.

To the person asking what this has to do with FFXI... there was no other person more worthy of the title Beastmaster. You could almost see the love hearts flying out as he charmed every beast no matter how deadly.

His passion for conservation and preservation was second to none. His work protecting endangered species, and protecting people from deadly animals has saved thousands of lives in both the animal and human realms.

The outpouring of emotion from all over the world has taken me aback. As mentioned, he copped a lot of flack here in Australia for his over-the-top antics and stunts, and his amazing work for the environment was often overlooked. Not so now, as everyone realises we lost a national treasure.

Steve was a legendary, awe-inspiring heroic figure who gave his fullest all the time. He truly loved this planet and everything on it.

I'll finish with a couple of quotes from him, so you can get a glimpse of the character of this great man.
I believe our biggest issue is the same biggest issue that the whole world is facing, and that's habitat destruction.

I have no fear of losing my life - if I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it.
      May he rest in peace.

I find humor in Irony, does that make me a bad person? I understand quite well that the things I say are often misinterpreted by people. I did call him an idiot, but think about it. He was around the most dangerous animals on the face of the planet, on a daily basis. Not only was he around them, but he even went so far as to molest them. That qualifies as "Idiot" in my book. However, that fact does not have any bearing on how I viewed his work in the field of Zoology and as a person. I admire Steve greatly, used to watch his show and all the special documentaries I could. Idiot could perhaps be replaced with "Insane" or "Completely nuts" if that makes you feel better.

I appreciate your advice, but I'm sorry. I cannot comply. Being shot down in flames has never stopped me before, and it will not stop me any time in the future. Besides, this is the internet. What are you going to do, whine at me? :D

Everything have their causes... You play with deadly animals, you know you might be dead. The same way you post something others find offensive, you know you might be flamed... Buddhism teaching o_O; oh well.

I was surprised he got tons of fans in Thailand too.

The important thing is that he died what he loved doing best. Nobody could've asked for anything more.

That and he helped make dumb people a little bit smarter before they decided to head off into the bush without knowing what's out there. Even then dumb folks will still go and get bitten. oh well heh.

Re: Crikey! The Croc. Hunter is dead!

I had heard of this pretty much from a /tell from a friend of mine, surprisingly enough. I chatted with him for a few minutes, then checked a few news sites to verify. Sure as shit, there it was. Steve Irwin, dead. Stingray barb through the heart.

The most I've seen of him as a personality on TV was a documentary on him and the re-opening of the Austrailian Zoo (or something to that effect), and his appearances on David Letterman (I think that was him, or it could've been some other nature guy, not really sure ). Either way, although I didn't personally watch him or his shows, I knew of his work and that it was indeed educational and quite entertaining. He was doing good work, all the while loving what he did.

In the end, that's probably the best death anyone could ask for; going out doing what they love, satisfied and happy with what they have done in thier life. Said once or a thousand times, it remains true; he will be missed.

A friend of his was on Larry King Live last night, and they showed several older interviews with Steve and of course people had asked him many times whether or not he was worried about dying, and whether he thought it was all worth it.

His answer was essentially that of course he was afraid (you'd be stupid not to be), but that he felt that what he was doing was more important than his fear. Which I think is pretty fair.

It was a really good program, and shed a lot of light on why he did what he did, which was cool.
