My gf just sent the same article to me today (but it was from CNN).

Personally, I have much disdain for the chinese government on many issues. This is just one that illustrates how backwards they are and always will be.

Complete and utter disregard for life and all sensibilties. That's what china is great at.

I'll refrain for detailing how backwards they are but they are still not any different than when they had their cultural revolution, or for any other point in their history.

And they tout that they've come along so far and how china is so great. As the chinese saying goes: They're only good at kissing their own horse's ass.

Like mountain lions on the west coast here in the states? I actually remember there being that problem a few years back. People get up in the morning and there's a mountain lion on their back porch.

As for the whole China killing everyone's dogs, did they allow people who had proof of vaccination to keep their dogs? Also surprised there weren't arrests and such from people trying to protect their dogs (or did they and the animal website didnt mention it?)
That would be like killing everyone who has ever had sex in order to prevent the spread of AIDS.

They dont need proof. All they need is an accusation and then they can get to work.

The thing about asian countries is that, they dont treat animals like they do here. No, it's not everyone because of course there are animal groups and shelters etc etc in asian countries but for the majority of the people, they view dogs, cats and other pets as just animals. not companions. Im sure thats why they didnt mention whether or not anyone got in trouble for trying to stop them. Honestly, I doubt anyone would. You get in their way, they'll do the same to you.

I see this a lot with asian people. They view dogs and cats as dirty. They arent allowed inside most the time and they dont really have any sort of emotions according to most of the older or less americanized generation i know.

Owners were offered 63 cents per animal to kill their dogs before the teams were sent in, the report said.
Where have they done this before? Sounds familiar.. oh right... back when Mao took over. He offered your neighbor money to slander you because you were intelligent. Cant have intelligent people roaming around now can we? they might know that we're up to something!

LMAO @ Baby Cage. There was an episode of Scrubs where everyone in the hospital wasgiving presents to carla and turk for there baby to be. and the Janitor gave them a baby cage ( a dog box ) and was like "look look, it has windows, mine didnt have these, if you wanna go out, just fill up the water throw in some wood chips and your good to go" *long silent pause "yeah its for when you get the baby a puppy"

then later on hes on the phone to his mom and says " No MOM! Playpen isnt to baby cage what toMAYto is to tomARto"

It's offical, the world is going down the tube. This is a prime example how government will always take the course of action that displays it's power rather than it's mercy. How is killing 50,000 dogs going to stop rabies? Many other mammals carry it and there's really no way to stop it other than distributing a vaccine. But like I said, the government wants to show it's power rather than take a smarter course of action.

Plus, they're communists. You can't expect them to solve a situation with thought.

This makes me sick to my stomach.
"Oh, you ca'n't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're Mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be", said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

No, in fact there was a statement made about dogs with proof of vaccination. They were to be killed in case the vaccination was ineffective.
(my take on "ineffective" is that there was probably a scam where owners were getting their pets "vaccinated" with a saline solution)

NPR did a small story on it yesterday, and China is having a honest problem with rabies epidemics. The Guardian article is dead on that the government should have done better preventing the epidemics to start with.

I understand their reasoning as to why they culled the dogs, but the methods used were barbaric. I agree with Mog. Anyone who decided that bludgeoning an animal to death was acceptable needs to die in the same manner.

Think of it from China's point of view:

                            1. Shoot them in the head. This wourd cost WAY too much for 50,000 bullets, not to mention the extra bullets for misses.

                            2. Painress Drug. Haha! So much more than the bullets! **** that... Our RMT is not going to be used easing the death of beasts!

                            3. Beat them to death. Can use the same "big stick" over and over. The dogs will have a very painfull death, but dogs are not me, they have no soul.

So you can see why they cannot be blamed for their actions.

EDIT: I had replaced all of the Ls with Rs, but I believe that would have been pushing it... I don't hate Chinese people.

EDIT: Ha! I missed one... I'll leave it.

Their threat assessment is way off, and if that's how they deal with their problems they're going to have a hell of a hard time in the future. They're just as backwards as Africa.

Rabies is transmitted through rodents such as squirrels and rats through their saliva, and can be transmitted through their victims' saliva as well. If their government wasn't so corrupt they'd have dealt with the problem at the source, instead of trying to take out a single stitch in the fabric. Insane racoons and rats will still be biting people and other animals, and soon they'll have nothing left to bludgeon to death except themselves.
