  • So I got sick of Windows and got Fedora Core 5....

....and now I can't get wireless working, and can't install my ATI drivers.

Still better than Windows, I just can't figure it out.

Hopefully I manage to get it taken care of, then get Wine so I can play FFXI (hopefully it'll run it).

I'm asking for help alll over the place, no one seems to have a noob-friendly bone in their body though. They always just link to stuff that kind of explains it half-way into the process.

I just thought I'd come to a friendly forum so I can say fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff and wonder if I'm gonna have to cancel FFXI or not

You cannot escape from the Collective. Resistance is meaningless, you are under our control forever and always.

Yeah whatever you say, I don't even got drivers installed yet and this is still running faster than Windows.

Plus I went to doom3 (dot) zoy (dot) org and it didn't even do anything.

I wasn't gonna ask for help at first but now that I think of it, I should ask for help every chance I get.

      SOMEONE HELP PLEASEEEEE

Ya I always measure the usefulness of things by how little of my hardware they support.

It won't, and no I'm not just being an ass.

There are how-tos all over the internet. There's a massive indexing site called Google.

You're not getting help because your probably asking questions in an 'OMG do it all for me.' Your going to be expected to look and figure it out yourself, and when the instructions you find don't work or didn't work right, ask a specific question related to that. "I don't know how to do anything, tell me what to do' isn't going to get you any help.

this is still running faster than Windows.
Of course it is, it's not doing anything.

An OS's usefulness is measured in its ability to run your applications. Sounds like Linux has a usefulness rating of 0 to you. Have fun on the bandwagon though.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Every site I've gone to so far expects me to know stuff I don't know. How's that helpful? I can't do anything when I don't know anything. It's like trying to do math you've never heard of, even though you know other kinds of math.

And I'm not hopping on any bandwagon, I'm just sick of Windows.

Then toss your computer in the garbage, as Linux is going to be just as useful to you. Yes you are expected to learn things on your own, no one is going to hold your hand through it.

And yes, Linux is the bandwagon everyone who cries out to anyone who will listen Microsoft is the devil and Windows is enslaving the world. They yell it sucks without knowing anything about it. They go to an OS that is considered sticking-it-to-the-man because at first most of it's development wasn't done by a company, when in reality they need an OS that does everything for them so they don't have to learn what is going on in their magical white box.

No $**7, Sherlock. I'm looking forward to learning it. My deepest apologizes for not knowing every single thing about the OS inside and out, I mean I should know by now since I've had it installed for almost a whole day.

I didn't say Windows was the devil or anything, I just don't like it.

Linux is free, and once I figure it out it'll run better for me. I don't like having to deal with viruses, spyware, defragging, and all that fun stuff.

Re: So I got sick of Windows and got Fedora Core 5....

The odds of someone on this forum being able to help you are pretty slim. They'd either have to be familiar with your specific hardware quirks under Fedora, or have an encyclopedic knowledge of all things linux. Given that FFXI doesn't run under linux (in any fashion, through any emulator, ever), the cross-section of linux users who play FFXI and read this forum is probably pretty small, and not too likely to contain one of the above two types of people.

Find some Fedora forums, search for threads mentioning your specific hardware, read all the docs you can, and if you still can't find anything, ask for help. Tell people you're fine RingTFM if they can point you to the right FM to R, and you're more likely to get more than just "RTFM" in response.

Does Linux somehow make you immune to spyware and viruses?

I'm pretty sure you're still vulnerable.
I mean, most viruses are probably windows-specific, but I fail to see why Spyware won't effect you, and there maybe viruses that will affect you out there.

Defragging takes a relatively short period of time, and you don't really have to do it that often. I'm not sure what's to deal with.

Not trying to dissuade you, but I thought this bit was a bit odd.

Also, I've never used Linux, but it seems to me like Linux is to stick-shift as Windows is to automatic.

You're going to have to learn a whole lot more manual control to deal with it, and it's unlikely without the basics you'll be able to get what anyone is saying. I can't speak for how much you actually know, but you may want to figure out how the clutch operates.

Re: So I got sick of Windows and got Fedora Core 5....

Linux is made mainly for programers really, yeah its fun to mess with and suports much better version of emulaters, but WINE will not run FFXI and its silly to use Linux, then emulate windows -.-

if you want an OS that is faster then Windows but stillruns all things windows

Do a google search for Tiny Windows Beast edition (bittorrent download)

it has just what you need to play Windows games and suports everthing XP does but it uses only about 1/3 of the resources and is only around 150 megs in size, oh and no CD key needed
(there are other versions of Tiny XP some with more netwroking stuff and things but are bigger in size)

only thing I need to note is that the OS will force itself to reboot on first boot, and you need to reboot it after installign soemthing unlike normal XP

Linux has viruses, spyware, self corrupting filesystems if they don't like you and most of the 'friendly' distros have daemons running that will happily allow anyone and their dog to gain root access.

Linux security based simply on it being Linux is a joke. It relies on the abilities of the administrator running it, just like every other OS.

Heres an Idea, create 2 partitions on your hardrive.

On first install Linux, do all you work and internet browsing, flesh browsing etc on that.
On the second install windows, solely use that for FFXI.

How do you install 2 partitions, well google is your friend, its too complicated to explain.

Wine can emulate most anything, it comes down to how well you can tweak it, however you have a few other things to figure out before you hit the Wine stage.

You're still working with video and LAN drivers. Personally I'm not impressed with Fedora, but I do know a few people that play WoW, Quake, Half-Life 2, and Unreal on it.

For your first time in Linux I used to recommend Mandriva, however I'm less and less impressed with them as of late. Another viable option for a first timer would be SuSE. Either way, start searching at http://www.google.com/linux, start hitting the mailing lists and IRC channels for help, and search for your local Linux Users Group. (LUG) They often have meetings, do projects, and are a local source of help.

I haven't done any gaming in Linux for about 5 or 6 years, and have since migrated to BSD, but it can be done. However you have to realize it's not going to be easy at first. As you become more experienced things may work faster for you, and having less problems.

It may cost you some money, but once you have your video card running up to speed, and have your LAN working, check out Transgaming. Used to be ~$30 last time I used it, dunno how much it is now, but this will most likely be your best bet for getting FFXI running under Linux of any flavor. It's a very customized Wine for gaming, and was very easy last I used it. I don't know anybody personally who has FFXI up and running on Linux, but I can't find anything that says absolutely that it cannot be done. I wouldn't mind doing it myself, I just don't have the hardware for it.
