    Re: Your dream home?

Sounds nice. But as I said before, I couldn't live in it.

And revenge of the 70's indeed, it does need new deco, but it's an awsome house.

As an European, I wanted to react here.

For houses : really I don't think so, but I did not saw many US houses so I can't really say. Either peoples are singles or students and have an appartement or want an house with a room for everyone in the familly too.

About cars, gasoline is really really more expensive here ( like 2 or 3 times the price in the US ) and peoples don't need big cars. A journey of 1 hour is a lot here, while it seems nundane when I talk with Americans. These 2 facts tend to explain why there is a such difference about cars (at least to me).

But for things in general I agree with you : "The bigger, the better." does not sounds very european.

It's interesting to me that the majority of folks who have responded are looking for something in the wilderness, or just something away from people in general. Meanwhile, I want to be in the middle of people always.

        Huh.

I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere. I don't want to be in the middle of a packed city, but I hate being in the middle of nowhere.

            If I can't get to Wal-Mart in 15 minutes, i'll pass.

My house is sort of rural its on the water but i'm 10 min from town and no more then 20 min from anywhere in Mobile. I grew up in the sticks so I kinda like haveing some space between me and my neighbors. But I like being close to town. I gess you could say I'm an urben redneck.

Well, keep me in mind if you end up with it at some point, I'll be an Interior Designer in less than three years.

I don't go to Wal-Mart. I mean, we have them, and they are within 15 minutes, but I don't go there. Target if I must, I guess.

                  Man, that sounded really snobby.

                    Re: Your dream home?

I'd want a condo in the middle of a nice city. Possibly waterfront or close to it. 5th story, corner with a balcony.
I agree, mostly. I grew up in the US, lived in a semi-rural area in western WA with lots of trees. However, now living in Taipei, I really appreciate the convenience of city life (especially not having to drive to go anywhere). But, I digress from the real topic, which is "Your dream home?".

For me, at this stage in my life (maybe not after retirement), I'd like to live in a small apartment on a floor that is high enough to require use of an elevator. It should have two bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen, and be furnished with a powerful air conditioner. Must have broadband. Hmm, a view of Taipei would be nice, too. Preferably would have wood/tile floors, and cement walls. And, it must be near a Metro rail/bus station.

That sounds like my best friend's apartment. Well, save for the view of Taipei. It's a really amazing space, and everyone hates him for it. But he's tired of the high rent (for this city) and would like to move. But he lurves his apartment too, so he is torn!

I would gladly take it off his hands. I'm just saying.

But if the town isn't big enough to have a wal-mart, i'm not interested ;P

Hemm now that I've got that out of my system I found that building my own home was a lot harder then I thought it would be and don't trust contracters they lie.
Unless of course your an architect like myself and have plenty of experience with contractors and what goes on, but broke, yup it ain't cheap (though cheaper than buying a brand new house from a developer) surprisingly the biggest cost in teh Uk is the land to build it on. i can design and build a 5 bed house for £90,000, though the land would cost a further 80-100k, though when i comes to selling I'd still make 50k profit on it.

Here is a new living room extension I am currently designing, a minimalistic modern glass structure with great views over the city.

(if your wondering all done in Archicad)

Very cool, Jarre. I really like the way that looks! Now, are you on the edge of an area that overlooks the city then? Or is there a house in the foreground there that you're just not showing?
