  • Mini Work Rant

    [rant]

I work in the IT field, where I'm responsible for all kinds of semi-important things that eventually could lead to someone elses life or death.

I understand why businesses off-shore things out of the use to places like Inda, Eqypt, Brazil and many others, because it saves alot of money.

However, one of the groups that I work with, no one in their groups knows ANY English, other thank "Thanks". Soo, how do they talk to us? They use the web translator "Babbelfish" to translate Portugese to English, then they copy and past that to us in a Instant Messaging program.

    No problem right?

Except this is what I got in my messanger:

    >Brazil Guy : My head it spoke to me
    >Me : ...
    >Brazil Guy: and it swims
    >me : ...
    >Brazil Guy: with the mother of it!
    >me : Ok, got it!
    >Brazil Guy: Thanks!

Now, I have no idea what he wanted me to do, but I didn't do anything to his systems, but he never contacted me again either.

Oh, as if the bug reports would be any better if they did speak English.

Brazilians aren't really known for their internet communication skills, mostly just their free game infestation skills. I thought they had their own language though, didn't know they spoke Portugese.

If you need to you might be able to convince your boss to hire a few Babel people for human translations. Their normal ones are terrible, so terrible that I usually use Freetranslation.com or something.

Anyway, im portuguese, the best thing i can do is try and decode babelfish's gibberish in this bit: "and it swims"

                LESSON TIME

That actually means "and nothing", in a sentence it would be used in this situation:

"I was trying to get her attention, i even danced... and nothing!"

Babelfish is just lame in how it translates things too directly, the portuguese word for "nothing" is "nada", however, "nadar" means "to swim",

                To swim:

                I swim
                You swim
                We swim
                They swim
                It swims <----------------------

Babelfish translated "nada" to "it swims"

The guy wanted to say "and nothing" or "nothing".

i cant make much sense of the other sentances

What I like about Portuguese is I understand most of it without knowing any protuguese at all. Why? Because spanish and portuguese are very simliar

Perhaps, my boss? told me something..? I have no clue really; don't speak any Portuguese whatsoever, but he could be referring to "head" as someone above him rather than the body part.

My head it spoke to me and it swims with the mother of it.

Are you guys stupid? This guy's head swims with the mother of it, therefore his head swims with his mother.
