Yep, been there, done that myself. My parents were FAR from ideal! But HOOO BOY when the grandkids came along DANG did they get nice! LOL Though I did have a little issue with my mother favoring my daughter over my son and it took my DAUGHTER to straighten her out!! I tried and tried to explain to my mother that she was making my son cry and feel bad but she wouldn't listen. I talked to my kids about it and tried to explain that what grandma was doing was wrong but to try and not be mad at her because she doesn't understand. (Now thats a HARD talk when your kids are little and at this point mine were!) Then one day my kids went out with my mother and she pulled the old "oh I'll buy my granddaughter a toy but not my grandson" routine. My daughter looked at her square on and put the toy back. She said she wouldn't take anything from my mother unless she got something for her brother too! This is proof that treating your kids with respect and talking to them DOES work!

It really does. I've seen it in the families of my friends who had normal relationships with their parents. Love and respect goes a lot further than screaming and violence.

Get down to child's level, always make eye contact, and give him a very stern voice.

If he misbehaves, send him (don't bring the food) to a corner (away from the door and not in his bedroom) that you can easily monitor, and sit him face first in the corner and do not speak to him for 4 minutes (if he leaves corner, quietly put him back there and walk away without speaking a word). Don't hesitate to take away his toys and video games.

Hide all snacks out of the child's reach (treat snacks as if they are medicines) and only give them as a reward.

at dinner table, give him serving portions no larger than his fist size, and give him a requirement of how many bites of that serving he must eat.

Ah, proper conditioning at its best.

Ya if you go watch that Nanny show, she uses the exact same techniques. But one thing the show doesn't do is delve into the why's deeply enough. "Here do this" and then we move on to the next thing. The show should be two hours long to provide a much more in depth education into the why's and how's of handling kids.

When I was little my dad used to break things to get me to listen. My leg, my arm, a stick over my arm/legs. You know the usual.

It wasn't that bad but I used to get some pretty good spankings with a belt or whatever else belt like was at hand. nothing says "Pick up your room" like an extension cord across your bum.

I feel for you TaskMage. My 2 year old is pretty self contained. I don't know if its because he is blind or just because we don't have any other kids to give him ideas but he dosen't get in to stuff very much and he gets around pretty well with his box caine.
