Trinidad (Seeded 32nd) took on England today.

The first 83 minutes remained scoreless, but Crouch headed one in and another goal was scored before the game was up.

IMO Trinidad's "Make all of our games draws" strategy is making them look a lot better than they actually are. The play one Striker, and pretty much everybody else jams up their net to prevent cross-shots.

        England 2, T&T 0

I think Trinidad performed extremley well. Everyone was expecting England to pull ahead of them in a big lead, but as we can all see, it didn't work out that way. Trinidad had some excellent defense, and kept the game on lock until very late in the game, when I think they just got wore out, and England squeezed out those two goals.

Trinidad potentially scored two goals themselves, one was offsides, and one just got saved as it was crossing the line. Despite losing the game, it was very close, and Trinidad showed they have the talent to challenge one of the best teams at the World Cup. All in all, England just did not perform as expected in that game.

England were very poor in teh first half and some of teh second, their pace and attack didn't pick up until they brought in rooney and Lennon. Lampard made some terrible strikes at the goal hoofing most about 10 miles above it!!!

trinidad played very defensive and we just didn't have the grunt up front until the above substitutes came in. although rooney and lennon didn't score, they certain put pressure on the defenders and created the good chances for Crouch and Gerard. we were lucky at the end and even more so when trinidads goal was disallowed due to their striker being offside. (was watching it in the gym while working out)

I want us to play Germany and see if we can repeat the 5-1 thrashing we gave them last time. I hope sven considers playing lennon more to boost his experience and help work the front like he did yesterday.

Actually they started near the same time.. maybe a decade or 2 apart. American football rules were created in Canada> And there were many other versions of kicking games from other countries way before.
American football is just Rugby but With loads of padding!!
And people still get serious injuries.. but what's the big deal with trying to reduce injury? The game isn't played to cause injury.

soccer is an Americanism and is not the correct term, all the other conuntrys seem to still call it "football".
Soccer is the term we use here because we Americans have a local game called football already. Just like the Aussies and Canadians. Oh and Italy calls the game "calcio".

Oh and we borrowed the word from you brits. So how exactly is it "Americanism" to borrow a word you guys created in the first place?

At one time everyone believed the world was flat too.

I for one am not much of a footie fan, more an F1 racing fan, though I do watch the england matches, patriotism you know!

As for manchester united, yes hes slowly screwing the club up at the moment and 80% of the fans hate him.
Footie? I thought it was called Football. USE THE CORRECT TERMS!!

                Re: World Cup! '06, Germany

Essentially, it boils down to this:

The word "football", when used in reference to a specific game can mean any one of those described above. Because of this, much friendly controversy has occurred over the term football, primarily because it is used in different ways in different parts of the English-speaking world. Most often, the word "football" is used to refer to the code of football that is considered dominant within a particular region.
Take note of the, "Because of this, much friendly controversy has occurred over the term football," and let's keep it friendly.

As for football history, the name football, derived from the old English "fute-ball", dates back to 1409, a good 83 years before Columbus stepped on the shores of your fine country.

Also, take note of the following:

In some English-speaking countries, the word "football" usually refers to Association football, also known as "soccer" (the name was originally a slang abbreviation of Association). Of the 45 national FIFA affiliates in which English is an official or primary language, only three (Canada, Samoa and the United States) use "soccer" in their name, while the rest use football
Anyway, that aside, good luck to everyone who is rooting for their teams. Personally, I'd like to see England lift the trophy 40 years after we last did. Especially as it's held in Germany and they're who we beat back in '66. I just hope they get their act together and start playing better than they did in the first two matches.

Damn, why oh why does mexico always have to wait for the final results to know if they passed to the next round or not (although the lucky bastards always pass ) Anyway, they'll play at least one more game.

Though he hasn't played well anyway.

The first half we (England) were great against Sweden, the second... oh my god, we're going home very soon!

A mexico vs england game would be nice, but sadly that would only happen if both teams got to the finals.

Even if Mexico won the next game against either Netherlands or Argentina, their next rival would be Germany (because I seriously doubt Sweden will win that one). So, I don't think they'll get beyond quarter-finals this time.

On the plus side Germany and Brazil wont face each other unless they both make it to the finals, and it seems there are good chances that will be the case.

                          Re: World Cup! '06, Germany

I'm so disappointed that Mexico couldn't at least draw this last one with Portugal. I mean, sure, they still made it through to the next round, but mentally, I'm sure a win would be a lot better for their confidence entering the next round.

                          I
                          can
                          not
                          believe
                          Bravo
                          missed
                          that
                          penalty
                          kick.

Nothing in this World Cup has irritated me more than seeing that, I swear.

Oh, well, I hope Mexico can regroup in time for the next match, and hopefully pull off a win.

Mexico has a tradition of sucking at penalties...

No one over here was even slightly surprised he missed.
