For all you soccer fanatics out there, I figure I'd make a World Cup thread.

What are your picks to win the pools? Advance? Make Semi-Finals? Finals? Win?

Personally: (Pool - First in pool, second in pool)

A - Germany, Poland
B - England, Sweden
C - Argentina, Netherlands
D - Portugal, Mexico
E - Italy, Czech Rep.
F - Brazil, Japan
G - France, South Korea
H - Ukraine, Spain

Then...

Germany > Sweden
England > Poland
Mexico > Argentina
Portugal > Netherlands
Italy > Japan
Brazil > Czech Rep.
Ukraine > South Korea
France > Spain

Then...

Germany > Mexico
France > Italy
England > Portugal
Brazil > Ukraine

AND thus...

Germany > France
Brazil > England

And unfortunately for the home team, Brazil will kick their asses.

Brazil's lineup is just too good... Ronaldo, Ronaldhino, Cafu, and Kaka... You can't make a more stacked team.

Thoughts?

I saw an interesting article. Last time a squad with an average of something-or-other won a world cup was some ungodly amount of years ago...

Brazil, France, Czechs, and a few other good teams are above that age.

Although I don't think Brazil is going anywhere without the cup.

Indeed. I played football for years, I can't exactly call something else football.

But yeah, I don't think Portugal's going to do too well. I think I gave them too much credit over the Netherlands.

The rules of football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other versions of football played at the time.

The word soccer is a colloquial abbreviation of association (from assoc.) and first appeared in the 1880s. The word is sometimes credited to Charles Wreford Brown, an Oxford University student said to have been fond of shortened forms such as brekkers for breakfast and rugger for rugby football. In the late 19th century the word soccer tended to be used only at public schools; most people knew the game simply as football. Today the term association football is rarely used, although some clubs still include Association Football Club (AFC) in their name. The game is sometimes known colloquially as footy; the term footer was also once used but is now obsolete.

Now "soccer" is thought up as being "Americanized".

US, Canada, Australia.. each country has their own localized version of Football. Hence why we use Soccer.. but these soccer snobs can't get over that fact we use a different term for their sport. It stems from the hatred of anything that is "Americanized" even tho the word "soccer" was coined by the British
themselves.

I think the German's will do good with homefield advantage, but ONLY if their captain's calf heals. Ballack is absolutely instrumental.

As for England, Rooney's back. That's definately good news for them.

Ronaldo's blisters have healed as well, he'll be good to go. Although it would've been interesting if he sat out the first 3 games.

Btw and OT, what ended up happening with the Tampa Bay owner buying Manchester United? Did he screw everything up or has he left it relatively alone?
