    Re: World Cup! '06, Germany

Well, I'm rooting for both the US and Mexico this year ... even though I'm American, I think Mexico's got a better chance and my husband's family is from Mexico so I feel a little bit of love for the Mexicans.

I call it futbol, not football. =) Still, 90% of Americans have no frigging clue what I'm talking about when I say it.

Anybody else catch the Trinidad & Tobaggo/Sweden match?

Amazing. Hislop and Sancho played UNBELIEVABLY.

Yes, I watched it. Such an emotional game for T & T, what with it being their first ever game in the World Cup. I was really pulling for them.

Brazil and Germany looks like the team to beat. Spain is looking good. I'm lookign for an eastern europe team to break through as most of the good african teams failed to qualify for it.

Forza Italia! Go USA. (good and bad thing about double nationality )

I'm hoping Italy plays good, even if after the recent soccer/football scandals (especially with my Juventus ) I don't think they deserve to win the cup.

Maybe they will lose against USA

ps. In Italy soccer's called "Calcio" (Kick) but american football is calledthat "Football Americano".

              Mexico 3 - Iran 1

The first half was too close, I guess Mexican players were still nervous about being in a world cup, but the 2nd half they started playing for real.

(next match vs Angola, June 16)

Edit> Also here's the official schedule, with results and a video with the most important moments from the matches, just click on the time to convert to your time.

Japan was doing so good and then recieved 3 in the last part of the match!! .

True.... very very true. Even though Mexico has attended to 8 world cups, their 1st match always makes them nervous. The 1st half was very very close, but like you mentioned in the second half Mexico just showed their soccer. With that pressure off, Mexico is team to follow, it has interesting players, and it is a very respected team now... IMO

I am cheering for Mexico, I really think they've got a legitimate shot at the cup if they can keep their wits about them.

Am I the only one that's really rooting for Spain?

They destroyed the Ukraine in their match today, 4-0. Spain has a notorious history for having shitty luck in the World Cup, but it looks like they'll go really far this year, atleast I'm hoping.

I'm watching the Germany/Poland game right now, 64 minutes in and it's still 0-0. Lots and lots of close shots, but no one's made a goal yet! Also, the US needs to get its act together for the match up with Italy this Saturday.

They atleast need to score a goal to retain some shred of dignity after that horrible display against the Czech Republic.

Edit: Holy Shit! Scrath my last comment. In the last minute of stoppage time, Germany just scored! The Polish look are so pissed right now! It was a really close match, Poland should be proud, but Germany got them agian.

It's gonna be Germany. Have to go with the home pride (was born there after all!)

germany beat poland 1-0 in a very exciting match, germany getting a goal in 91st minute by using their speed to beat down the wore-out and shorthanded poles. germany is in a lackluster pool, they should had dominated both poland and costa-rica but barely escaped both games so far. germany won't get past the quarters in the knockout rounds because thier defense is spotty and costa rica exposed that.

spain is in a weak pool, if they don't exit that pool 3-0 something is wrong with them.

italy and usa is in a tough pool with the czechs. those czechs are the sleeper in the pool and thier domination of USA did not surprise me one bit. USA been banged up with injuries during qualifiers, and italy isn't at 100% either. czechs will advance to the round of 16 without a doubt, but the other team will depend.

i think the best pool is the one with england in it. Paraguay and Sweeden will not go down easy. Defensive mistakes will play big in this pool, England won thanks to an "own goal" by the other team. if it wasn't for that, all 4 teams would been 0-0-1 heading into thier second match. this entire pool is all about defense, there won't be much offense at all.

if you want to see offense, go to group d or group h. mexico and spain have good forwards, and the other teams have very spotty defense.

Group F is definately the offensive group.

Brazil, Australia and Japan are all offensive teams.

I definately made a bad choice picking Ukraine > Spain... I though the Striker that signed on with Chelsea could do much better.

Umm, go England? We'll go with that. Never really could get into soccer myself (non American football).
Btw and OT, what ended up happening with the Tampa Bay owner buying Manchester United? Did he screw everything up or has he left it relatively alone?
Well Football came before american football. when someone decided to pick the ball off teh ground and run with it they called it Rugby. American football is just Rugby but With loads of padding!! soccer is an Americanism and is not the correct term, all the other conuntrys seem to still call it "football".

I for one am not much of a footie fan, more an F1 racing fan, though I do watch the england matches, patriotism you know!

As for manchester united, yes hes slowly screwing the club up at the moment and 80% of the fans hate him.
