  • The worst bill you've never heard of...

Hot on the heals of Save the Internet, comes this lil' beauty:

    http://ipaction.org/blog/2006/06/wor...-heard-of.html

    <snippit>
Simply put, [the bill] fundamentally redefines copyright and fair use in the digital world. It would require all incidental copies of music to be licensed separately from the originating copy. Even copies of songs that are cached in your computer's memory or buffered over a network would need yet another license. Once again, Big Copyright is looking for a way to double-dip into your wallet, extracting payment for the same content at multiple levels.

I'd love to see them try to enforce and let alone implement that.

Can anyone else see a new wave of very angry, anti-government, new metal garage bands self-bootlegging home-burned tunes out of the back of their van after they play tiny but enthusiastic night club after tiny but enthusiastic night club just to piss off the establishment? Because that's the mental image I just got...

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing. We can always use more angry new metal garage bands.

See, they're not going to enforce it on consumers.

What'll happen is companies that provide music (and music clients) will forced to enforce the law with their music-playing clients, or they'll get sued out of existence (probably using the DMCA) -- and we've already seen the RIAA do that.

So your iTunes client will double charge you ever time you move a playlist to your iPod from your PC, or Windows Media Player will refuse to play an WMA file until you've entered your credit card.

But that's not the only ramification. Getting "digital transmissions" considered "media distributions," under the Copyright Act, the bill could strengthen the case that the RIAA is making against XM Radio.

          riaa is a joke.

here is the thing, mp3s and other copyrighted content does not get abused off things like itunes and media player. its all the free distribution channels out there. one of the older and probably still most prolific is irc. until they stop the free distribution of irc and things like that they wont be able to stop anything.

its just another lame attempt by agencies like the riaa to protect intellectual rights. itunes and the like are hardly the culprits they should be going after. all that is going to do is cause a format/application war of sorts.

i always wondered why they went so hard after napster when they did. napster was just the poster child for what the government will do to file sharing supposedly. but look at how many other file sharing programs are still around. until they stop all the distribution outlets like irc, all these so called legislations are just a joke imo.

The RIAA is hardly a joke. They keep influencing some of the most loathesome legistlation seen, while attempting to extort money out of 12 year old little girls, and 82 year old grandmothers.

until they stop all the distribution outlets like irc, all these so called legislations are just a joke imo.
So we all, (A) become thieves, and use said channels, (B) pay excessive amount of money to all forms of digital media while simultaneous giving our fair-use rights, or (C) tell congress to quit selling out to big media and protect our fair-use rights.

Until Lasswyn's view becomes the norm, I'll take option C, thank you.

RIAA can't stop anyone from ripping mp3 and giving it to friends. they can only stop peeps from selling mp3s w/o a license.

copyright licenses aren't expensive, i recently purchased one after a professional photo session when i had family pictures taken. it only put me out $50, though this price varies.
