No. The profanity filter is on by default. In other words, you'll see ??? This is what gets my goat. People who say they are offended by the profanity yet they chose to turn the filter off.

In other words, it's like I turn to the PlayBoy channel and then call FCC to complain about the nudity on that network.

Really? I thought they had it pretty well covered, with getting most words and accounting for spaces and various other characters appearing b/w letters.
Oh, and I don't know that noone asked her to stop with the vulgar language, but she seemed to not have a clue who called the GM on her, and if someone has asked her to stop and she refused, then she'd probably have a pretty good place to start in figuring out who it was.

wow you dont have a clue -.- like I said lke what 4 times -.- I turn the filter off because I hate seeing ???? all the time when a word is thrown in every once and awhile during a normal conversation...........but it is stupid to over use thos same words, like in a rap song, very uncalled for and very bad mistake. Now if someone was doing this on my server in Jeuno, would I report them ...most likly not, because I would not really be there long anyway -.- or I would ask them to stop
Now if they where doing it in a place where I had to stay..like camping an HNM....and I asked them to stop and they didnt, then I would report them

Beside the fact that this was memorable, Kailea is right.

There is no damn point in shouting in jueno an offensive song, not even one.
About the shout chat filter......... pathetic solution. In shout most of the time you read interesting things, but some time you read silly ones.
And, as a FFXI player, putting the filter on the /shout is almost impossible.
And, honestly, digging the nose in public and saying "fuck fuck fuck fuck" in shout, or wherever, isn't the same thing.
If you don't like problems with other, try to not create them.
If you don't like to be admonished, then avoid any cause that gives to others the reason to reprimand you.
FFXI is an online game, within you can find every kind of people.
I even found an arab girl! And i bet she would feel offended by the title of the post.

Um...can we get past the point of shouting in Jeuno since the OP shouted in Behemoth's Dominion?

At 6:01 pm est time in the middle of camping Behemoth spawn I was sent to GM jail. The gm explained to me the reason I was there was for a tos violation. I asked what I had done, and I was told that due to my use of language towards a player in the game I was getting my account flagged.

Oh and this is rather cheesy so I apologize but I'm going to quote myself because I'm too lazy to type it out again. >.<

I don't think anyone in this thread beside the OP was there, which means we only know 50% of what happened. The only thing we know for certain is that shouting obsenities in public is against the TOS and therefore you can be punished for it. It was also stated that other people were shouting song lyrics also so its quite possible that the person that called the GM called because someone elses shouting offended them. But since GM's are never "johnny on the spot", the GM just happened to show up when the OP started shouting. Bad timing and bad judgement = a slap on the wrist. It's not like the OP was banned, all that happened was that they have a mark on them for what they did. So before we go around using this thread and people who post here to vent, lets remember that none of us were there, none of us know both sides of the story, and none of us know who the person actually reported or if it was just a generic report about offensive language being /sh'd. *edited to correct a mistake*

This thing seems just like parents trying to censor TV instead of paying a bit more attention to what their kids are watching. I'm of the opinion "Change the channel and don't bitch about it." There's no reason to complain about someone cussing alone because they're just words. If used in everyday conversation, their offensive meanings are removed due to lack of context. You have problems if you're offended just because someone drops the f-bomb too much and they don't use it to bash you or anyone else.

But in the context of rap songs, there's no way the words were used in a non-offensive manner to some group. Maybe they talked about sluts poorly, but then again, just for being a slut, your own being should offend you. Maybe it degraded women, but who cares? Stop your bitchin' and go make me a sandwich. Or maybe you're offended because you can't afford the bling they have, who knows and who cares because you're poor and no one will ever listen to you. Still though, just don't pay attention. You have the language filter for a reason, but if you choose not to use it because the ????s offend you (how funny), don't try to ruin someone else's reputation or record because you're having a day at the beach, so to speak.

Kildem, it would take a Muslim to be offended, not an Arab. Last I checked, not all Arabs were muslims. Even if she is, what does it matter? I really think anyone who's offended by things so easily is just far too uptight and has a moral stick shoved too far up their ass. It's a different story if you insult their prophet, but to say things like "jihad" shouldn't be. She's probably far more level headed than to be offended by this. So Kailea-D is in the right saying it should not have been done in the first place. And btw SE is the one who gave Kailea-D, and everyone else who plays this, the power to 'police' this game by giving them the ability to call GMs. FFXI is *supposed* to be that 'eutopia' you mentioned, but much like the real world a few choice members of the 'adult world' decide to ruin it for everyone.

Was the op wrong for shouting expletives in public? Yes. Infact if you do that in a a public venue irl you can get warned and fined for it. Though it may be small and insignificant to many people, it's still an official rule that people *should* obide by.

Was the person who reported the op right for doing so? Possibly, but this seems more like it was done just to get rid of her. Unlike reporting a bot or a gil seller, reporting vulgar language can easily be proven. So when someone shouts a cuss in the middle of a zone and another person reports it GMs can and most likely will take action as they have very little choice. It's the rules, you have to follow them and they have to enforce them.

Does everyone follow the rules 100% of the time? Hells no, but if they did there would be far fewer problems in this game and in this world.

And as for just filtering things, I can tell ya from experiance it doesn't work that great. When I first started playing I didn't even know there was a filter, but I did see '???' replacing words in chat though and had no clue what it was. Only problem is, many times the things getting filtered were normal words. If someone said something like 'push it' it would come out 'pu?? ??' ect. There are also things that can be down right vulger and not even be noticed by the filter. Just the other day I was in Jeuno and a bunch of guys in Ru'lude were having a shout convo about the size of someone's genetalia. In fact the phrase 'it's like an elephant's leg, with an elbow and everything' was used and then some. Not one word they used would have been filtered but I can assure you that convo was far too rude to be done in shouts. Any one of them could have easily been reported but none were.

Why should the people who find things like that rude have to listen to it while searching the AH or camping an NM? Things like that are against the rules for a reason, why should people who obey the rules suffer because someone feels it's ok to break rules? That whole 'if you were really mature you wouldn't' tell stuff is just BS attempt to turn people who don't want to deal with that stuff into the bad guy.

I know no one will follow the rules 100%, that's just a fact of life. But if you do knowingly and willingly break a rule, and then get caught, deal with it. Don't go complaining how it was unfair *you* got caught or say that 'it's not a big rule so I shouldn't be punished' or whatever. Just take what you get and be glad it wasn't worse and don't go declaring 'jihads' over it.

And fyi, using the word Jihad so loosely and without respect IS offensive to some Arabs and Muslims. A Jihand is the spiritual, psychological and physical effort exerted by Muslims to be closer to God and thus achieve a just and harmonious society. It is an aspect of their religion.

Ugh. Ok people. Here's a simple rule that my parents taught me.

1. Don't speak about religion.

2. Don't speak about politics.

The jihad is followed by muslims, and if non-muslims start talking about it in a way they don't understand, muslims can be easily offended. The lesson learned here is to not mention religion, period. Unless you know that all the people you're talking to are in the same religious denomination that you are in, which is almost next to being impossible. Just don't do it, unless you're ready to get bombarded with flames.

No, I think I understood the point of your post Kailea. You're essentially the worst kind of hypocrit. You turn off your filter because seeing an expletive is preferable to seeing ???? as you put it. If you see someone doing it in a zone where you won't be hanging around you won't do anything, however, if you do plan on staying you'll tell them to stop and then you'll report them to a GM.

I asked the GM what I had done..and his response?
"you used curse words in a shout".

Like it or not, the GM's/SE have deemed it a violation of the TOS whether its spelled out clearly in the TOS or not. You swear in a shout you lose. I think that this thread has served its purpose. Thread closed.
