Apparently, we are allowed to flame, bitch, rant and moan on internet forums/duscussions, but we have to use our real names according to this law.

While I understand that many atrocious things have been going on in other countries and it appalls me, I do not live in those countries. I live in a country that this administration has brought a lot of shame to. My husband is a Marine. Some of you will know what that means then when my husband and I say we do not support this administration. We did, but we no longer can. It pains us but they've left us no choice.

This is a decent discussion, no one has seemed to attack anyone maliciously, so I'll ask that you feel free to elaborate. Not meaning a direct shot at your age, but your ARE THE Grand Mom, so I'm guessing your husband was in Vietnam?

But I'm just a young whipper-snapper, so please excuse my presumptuousness!!!

            Re: This Administration sucks

LOL Yes my husband was in the service during Vietnam. He also collects a disability pension because he lost his leg. Back in the day, being in the service was a badge of honor. You took the spitting and the shouting in stride when you came home but you never stopped loving and supporting your country or the administration.

But I guess with age comes a certain ability to see beyond that blind devotion. So all it may be is a compliation of our age and experiences influencing our decisions, but when we see families losing sons and daughters over............what? Oil? Weapons of Mass Destruction? Where? Look at gas prices...did we get any oil out of this? LOL WoMD are nowhere to be found. How many have died for this mistake? How many more will die? When does the death end and the healing begin? Not soon according to this administration.

It's disheartening....we feel ashamed....we feel broken. I broke before my husband did which is pretty normal considering I'm a woman. But I didn't think he would break. I married a very intelligent man because before looks that means much more to me. We always had lively conversations being on different sides of the fence, as you can imagine! But the day he broke, it was so sad. I've never seen him like that. It was like someone had pulled the rug out from under him and he just didn't have the energy to get up.

It's been a hard decision, and especially hard for him. But we no longer support the Bush Administration. They have ripped the shades from our "blind faith" and shown us "the light".......thats about all we are thankful for from them.

              Re: This Administration sucks

What's truly remarkable, using your marriage as an example, is that despite the vastly differentiating views each citizen of this country has, no one has killed each other over political views, or difference in religion. The Election of 2004 showed that we can have a power struggle where the country is strictly divided and at the end of it all, we go back to our lives the next day.

In 2000, the power went from blue to red in one night, and no one died. I think that despite out problems, at least we have order, which, as Omni stated, is much more than other countries have.

But as M. Hyena pointed out, there are intricacies that are being expunged upon right under our very noses, and we are failing our duties as Americans. If the people so willed it, we could get rid of all this crap in our government, but as someone said to me a while ago:

The person is smart, people are dumb.
So the fact that we have a representative government is a blessing and a curse. Taking this further, America is a country beyond anything Greece could have ever been, so it is unlikely that if every citizen of qualifying merit got their say, anything would get done. Of course, I can look at my neighborhood and take this a step further and say that nothing get's done in the FIRST place, but that is for a different discussion

I do not support the war, nor do I support Dubya. I don't like the fact that the concept behind the PATRIOTS (sans MGS) is more correlated to the Illuminati than it is fiction, and that FEMA is the leading cause of minority death behind pork and the Police.

But I can't bash my country, because looking at myself as an example, those with the will to stick with their education can do almost all imaginable.

We still support our troops and our country. There are times where we want to pack up our bags and live somewhere else but everyone has moments of anger. I was born in America, raised in America, and I'll die in America. I respect my Great Grandparents for fleeing from the insanity to America and I will encourage my children, my grandchildren, and hopefully my great grandchildren to support their country and work to make it a better place.

I do believe that too many people sit back and piont fingers without getting up off their arses and doing something about it. VOTE! Don't give me this horse hockey that your vote doesn't count! It only doesn't count becuase you don't want it to! If you become a home owner, get out to your city's town meetings! Listen to what your local government is doing and put in your 2 cents worth! Yes, it does work! And since I'm a hippie, get involved with groups that support your ideals. You don't have to even participate if you don't want, just make a donation. If you want more hands on experience, you can distribute fliers, you can work on the phones, you can do any assorted paperwork like mailings, and you can demonstrate in protests. There is always a spot for everyone but you have to get off your lazy arse and do it! If more people got up and did something, the people in this country could make changes. We, as a collective, are stronger and more influencial than any large corporation but only if we work together and show them we are.

                  Re: This Administration sucks

I've learned to ignore most things coming out of Washington D.C.

I agree with people who've said that much of the laws that Congress and White House has passed in recent years are not really well enforced. In fact, much of the laws are impossible to enforce. The language written in these laws are meant to have a psychological effect on voters. "We're doing our jobs as legislatures and we have Americans in our best interest."

Well, ideally, that's how it should work...

For most mainstream Americans, they are more informed than ever before. However, informed is quite different from educated. I seriously believe that 60% of all college graduates within the past decade are dumber than bricks. I've come across a f*ckton of idiots wielding college diploma in hand and with that farcity, they land jobs in well-paid management positions only to mess up the companies they work for and get into trouble doing a lot of stupid things (Enron, MCI, Lucent, etc.)

The problem with this country is the lack of core, fundamental and solid education. While our government tries to make education reform a mainstay in their initiative to improve the domestic welfare of this country, the one thing they have failed to address is the most important institution. The family institution.

The family is the core and the single most important connection in this and any country. Family values are oft talked about, but rarely put into practice. Education is built on the foundation of family. If education is failing, please do not point fingers at the educators. Unfortunately it is high time to point the fingers at our real culprits: Parents.

And then there 731 paragraphs I want to write up, but unfortunately I do not have a year long lunch break ;3

                    The family institution.
GDI, I love you for mentioning that. With rising divorce rates and people not getting married because they get more benefits single and so forth, it's a wonder that some people have this. If I were to use my close-knit group of friends as references, I could say that 1 in 4 young black men has a father that actively lives in the same household as thier mother.

Parents are a big factor in god damn near everything, but DON'T DARE attack parents, cause there are lobbiests who are more than eager to point fingers at media, video games and music, which, ironically, they have within the power to control in their own households.

Education is also a BIG factor in why America has problems... But from this thread, it's evident that there are a plethora of them. In any case, I focus more on education, since without an education, you can't really do much in this world.

As I researched the "No Child Left Behind" act, I can see how HORRIBLE this has been for public schools nation-wide. I can look at a school like the one in my neighborhood, which, I thankfully didn't go to, compared to schools in the more affluent neighborhoods of Queens, NY, there were problems related to geography of zones and districts.

NCLB made the issue worse: Allow me to explain.

Using my younger brother as an example, my mother had an option of 2 "zoned" schools that comprised of kids from our neighborhood and neighboring areas. But being that my neighborhood is not only lower-middle class to "upper"-lower class and the surrounding neighborhoods are in the same predicament, there are other factors.

Prostitution, drugs, gangs and alcohol are issues that people of ALL ages face in SouthSide Queens. From a trickle down perspective, these are the only "role models" a lot of youths are seeing, what with other issues in families such as divorce and single-parenthood. So this affects the foundation of many youths, where they do not see education as important because of these external conflicts.

Then there are the teachers, who, bless their hearts if they're trying, are unsucessful some times because they lack the resources to teach effectively. Whether these are outdated materials, used materials, or even a low supply of important materials essential for teaching, teachers in districts like mine are fighting an uphill battle.

Then there are students. I've noticed that if you appeal to them, kids are usually VERY eager to learn. But in these instances, you have students who are unmotivated by teachers who have resolved to give up. So now there are kids who are not concerned with trying, making the "good" kids suffer, and collectively, bring down the scores of the schools.

Low test scores means that less parents will send their kids to those schools, and now we tackle another dimension of the problem: District Liability (thats what I like to call it.)

As parents, they have the option to move their children out of these schools, and it is their right. It's unlawful to tell a parent, "No, you can't move your child out of this school, regardless of the fact that there is no hope for them beyond this education if they leave." So many parents opt to go to schools in the distance and let their child use public transportation or other things.

So low grades, unmotivated students, and now not a lot of students showing up. Public schools are government funded (City government, that is), and based on a variety of aspects, things decide how much funding your school gets. All those aspects I mentioned above, those are hevy weights on this decision. So with the state of things in these schools, they get less funding, and things go from bad to worse, gradually, each passing year.

                    It's a vicious cycle.

But that's it for today, I suppose. I'll gladly accept comments, and later on I'll get into what the NCLB has to do with this.

I really think I'm the only conservative on this whole forum. Le sigh.

I'll try and hit a few different topics, but I don't want this to be real long, so if you'd like me to expand, just ask.

WMD's: They're not localized to nuclear weapons. Chemical agents are also considered WMD's and plenty of those were found in Iraq. My friend works for the ACLJ and read a book about everything thats been found in the last 3 years. If you want I'll call him and find out who wrote it and everything.

Schools: I'd like to agree 3k that most children really want to learn, but like you and Aeni both said, it has to start in the home. My friend is a teacher and taught a semester at a school that is for the most part extremely low income. He hated it. He didn't get to teach. He had to play disciplinarian all day everyday. Parents send their kids to school to learn discipline, not teaching it at home themselves. So, they get to school and get in trouble. Go home, but since parents really don't do any of their own discipline, nothing happens to them and the child learns it really doesn't matter what they do. It happens in all classes now, but seems to be worst in the lower classes.
Also, about the whole NCLB and the standardized test they have to do. Biggest problem with it that I see, is that now teachers don't teach their curriculum. They teach to the test. (Its also highly suspected that many teachers cheat for their students to get a higher pass percentage)

All in all I really feel I live in the greatest country in the world. This isn't just a pure nationalistic bias, but also comes from learning various things about how other countries' economies work, and just the general fact that I love this country. (I love my state too, nearly as much as the U.S.) Yeah, shit happens, but if I'm gonna live anywhere, it wouldn't be anywhere but right here in America.

                        Re: This Administration sucks

All I have to say is... I watched the school district I went to from kindergarden to graduation go from a normal school to a primarily special education school, because that was the only way they could stay open.

Most of the teachers started leaving, since none of the students wanted to learn anything. My senior year physics class went from physics in semester 1 to "keep the teacher sane" in semester 2. The 10th and 11th grade, for the most part, didn't care about passing of failing at all, and it really started getting to him.

Not to mention they were cutting out about 90% of our chemicals in storage. (He taught chemistry too, and advanced chemistry. I was in the advanced class my senior year.) We spent a good amount of class time going through our chemicals to organize what we were allowed to keep and what was going to be taken from us. We ended up losing 90% of our chemicals.

We went from 2 4ft tall by 2 feet wide by 1 ft deep cabinets (three shelves on it), two 5ftx3ftx3ft metal cases for hazardous chemicals, and three 8ftx5ftx2ft cabinets (six shelves per cabinet)... All full of various chemicals. (My memory on exactly what chemicals is a little less detailed, but we did have a lot of various types.) We weren't sure how many chemicals would get taken for sure, but I came back about six months after I graduated and saw just about everything gone.

I saw something similar in a friend on FFXI. She graduated college, got a job as a teacher, and said how nobody wanted to learn, they just wanted to talk during class and didn't care about their grades, and it started getting to her after a few weeks.

Erf...getting way off topic (even for an off topic post). I'm not sure if the government can really be blamed for the chemicals being taken out of our school, since a good number of our chemicals were over 20 years old...but our school did lack the budget to buy any replacements at all.

I think anthrax in enough amounts is considered a WMD. I'll talk to my friend about the book and get back to you.
