Ok, I've planning on doing this for a while since I'm sure there are some ppl coming into online gaming for the first time, and if you're anything like me it might be a little confusing to try and figure out what all the faces and symbols and such people are using both ingame as well as on these forums actually mean.
So without further ado I'm going to try my best and post all different faces etc. that you're likely to run into here and on FFXI.
: ) This is the typical smiley face. This one has been around for a very long time, probably since the internet first started and maybe even before that.
: ( Typical sad face. The meanings behind these two should be rather obvious
: P or :p Face sticking its tongue out. Can take the place of j/k (just kidding).
B) Smiley face wearing sunglasses. Same as smiley face, usually used just to be different. Could be considered the user is saying they or someone else is cool (what with the shades and all)
; ) Smile with a wink. Conontation should be obvious.
:D Face with a wide open mouth. Often used to show excitement.
XD Squinted eyes with open mouth. Usually used to show excitement especially at gaining something new ingame (AF, good treasure, etc.)
>< Squinted eyes. Kind of a Homer Simpson "d'oh" Something got screwed up somewhere and something less than good happened.
; ; I didnt actually find out what this one meant until just the other day. Its a crying face. Multiple uses, most of them should be obvious.
>.> Pair of eyes looking to the side. This one seems to have multiple meanings depending on user and context. Most often it seems to be a rolling of the eyes to symbolize sarcasm or such. Sometimes used both ways in a two line succession:

<.< I personally view this as a meaning of either the last thing I said or someone else is such that it was kinda stupid or embarassing and I'm seeing if anyone noticed. Like I said this one seems to have lots of meanings for different ppl, so any other perceptions on it would be great.
^^ Raised eyebrows. Often used b/w an non Japanese speaker and a non English speaker to denote a thank you. Also used to show happiness.
O.O Wide eyes. Usually denotes surprise.
O.o or o.O One large eye and one small eye. Kind of a "wtf was that?" confusion thing.
The etc.:
Lol: Laughing out loud
Rofl: Rolling on floor laughing
Roflmao: Rolling on floor laughing my ass off
Wtf: What the f***
Leet or more commonly 1337: Elite, used in reference to nice equipment or skill.
Ftw: for the win
I'm sure there are a lot that I'm not remembering right now. Please post any that you can think of and feel free to correct me on the ones I've been misinterpreting. My hope is that this thread will continue to grow, seeing as new faces keep showing up. I'll edit this thread to show any new additions as well as crediting those that brought it to my attention.
Hope this clears up some of the people sitting there looking at their screen scratching their head.
