http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/02/nag...ipt/index.html Mayor of new orleans blasting the govt.

I was watching CNN this afternoon and there was one guy who said he tried to evacuate in his car, but the roads were blocked (didn't say how, could be traffic jam) and he was forced to head back home. Other people had no money to leave because they were supposed to be paid on Sep. 1st. A lot of the ppl that stayed live pay check to pay chack.

From what I have been hearing after all the ones who want out, they will just leave those who dont want to evacuate there.

Also this whole racism card being played by Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson( amongst others ) is getting out of hand. The people in Mississippi did not get needed supplies or help just like those in New Orleans and alot were white.
All this crap about racism and all the idiots in New Orleans is taking away from the actual issues. The government ( federal and state ) reacted very very poorly to the situation and in a very lax manner it seems. Regardless of race the lower income people do all not have the means to get out of dodge that easily and quickly.

The United States governament dropped the ball on this one. I cannot say anything about the mayor of New Orleans but the state government of Louisiana also dropped the ball.

It is kind of sad that Texas and individuals with major recourses can react with better support for the evacuees than Louisiana and National Emergency agencies.

FYI, Kanye West said "George Bush doesn't like black people" on a NBC telethon I think it was on. What class. What total lack of ignorance..... >.>
Before the hurricane hit, they all had a week's notice. Everyone said that the government had done all that it can, etc. etc. The day after everyone is saying how horrible it was and that no precautions were taken. The two are mutually exclusive. I can understand ppl being pissed about waiting 4 days for government help to arrive, but to get upset the very next day before they had any time???? wtf is that?

Fuck Kanye West, he has no talent and rap blows anyway. I'm not sticking up for Bush either, I hate him too. Although, Kanye is probably right, a lot of American politcal leaders are racist, and not many people notice it. Not just politcians, but other things too, like heads of companies.

Racism is tricky, what may seem like racism might not be. Does Bush hate african americans, or the stereotypes they've created for themselves? I hate the stereotypes, but not the actual people. I do hate the people who make it a personal goal in life to personify those stereotypes, which does happen to be a lot of them. White kids also personify african american stereotypes, which I hate as well. I hope my post wasn't confusing, and I'm not mistaken as a racist. -_-

Re: Wow, SO messed up! People Shooting at rescue teams?

What I dont like is that its not racist if someone says a racist term, but it is racist if someone else says it.
                    i.e. a black person calls someone a n*****....not racist
however a white person calls someone a n*****....racist
and you cant say its necessarily b/c the person in example A. doesnt mean it condescendingly, ive heard many black ppl say it and mean it to be an insult. Either the word is vulgar and shouldnt be used, or it should be acceptable for anyone to say it (note: i find the word to be vulgar and shouldnt be used) for instance, if you called someone a dumbass, youd expect for that person to punch you in the face regardless of whether or not you told him it was ok b/c you also were a dumbass. If a word is determined to be racist, then its racist for everyone, not just a select few.
i dont like double standards, simple as that.

Re: Wow, SO messed up! People Shooting at rescue teams?

From Norway, my government just sent a small amount of Gil over to help with the rescue of those people.

You won't believe how sad it is to see USA care so little about their citizens, I mean, the disastered town of New Orleans footage looks worse organized in terms of help than most of the footage I've seen from 3d world countries in distress. There is ZERO order, just chaos!

With so many days of warning, where is the military to help evacuate people and ensure order? Why's Bush off on some sponsorship party the day after the catastrophe, instead of flying directly to New Orleans to care for his people?

This demonstrates MISERY, the US Capacity for caring about it's own people is the worst I've seen. My heart goes out to all the victims of the disaster, but respect for the US as a whole just sank to an all-time low. I'd think the Americans would take better care of themselves than what they've proven to do.

I hope when your stating this you mean the American Government and not all the people. The sum of America is more than its government. The majority of the people DO care but are limited by what they can do. Many did volunteer to go into N.O. to help but were held back by officials. Many companies bottled water and sent supplies but those were also held back. Frankly I'm tired of people in other countries viewing the entire nation by what a portion of them do. I am hoping that you just did not word what you said correctly.

Re: Wow, SO messed up! People Shooting at rescue teams?

To address some of the reasons ppl think its racism and the outrage at the slow government response (a lot of individuals and companies were ready and going to give aid but were told not to come or turned back), there are pictures floating around of GWB strumming a guitar on Tuesday, August 30th while people were drowning in New Orleans. A more recent example is that less than 48 hours of Rehnquist dying, GWB picks John Roberts to replace him. It took him 4 days (part of which he was on vacataion...again) to get around to visiting areas affected by Katrina. With people drowning and starving in a natural distaster he's gonna wait and sit on his thumbs, but a chance to thrust a conservative into the highest judicial position in the nation he gets right on the matter. Also, he stopped to give photo ops with ppl in Alabama and Mississippi, yet he chose not to visit anyone in New Orleans except public officials.

Speaking of photo ops, ZDF News reported how GWB's visit was staged. A U.S. senator, Mary Landrieu, D-La, reported the same thing.
...Flying over this critical spot again this morning, less than 24 hours later, it became apparent that yesterday we witnessed a hastily prepared stage set for a Presidential photo opportunity; and the desperately needed resources we saw were this morning reduced to a single, lonely piece of equipment.
So yes, people think race and class played a part in the government's late response.

Sorry for the off-topic reply, but was the gil thing a typo? Lmao, I've done that before, and even in real life. I once asked my mom for 5 gil for a bagel.

Nah, was intentional, the money was more symbolic than anything else, just over 1 Million dollars sent over to help buy fresh water, food etc. Since the amount was relatively small, I opted to call it Gil :D

                              to TheGrandMom:
In the small amount of time that passed since my last post, more horrible events have taken place. Media depicting white people to "find" food in supermarkets at the same time that they have a picture of colored people "stealing" from the exact same location.

You have to understand that we, as outsiders to the US, can only see and hear what the media and our own officials choose to tell us. Our own media, and other European media institutions are drawing a picture of USA that is all but positive. The way this disaster is being handled, both by the US Government, as we see it, demonstrates a lack of respect for human life (colored and poor people in particular), a lack of willingness to prepare for Katarina, and not least, the slow response time that was demonstrated.

Of course, even in stating my dismay about the US, I can not, nor will I not claim that every single american is like that, just as little as one can claim North Koreans to be all bad.

As a country, just as you can easilly agree that Iran is "Evil" and North Korea is "Evil", despite the fact that there probably are many honest, good hearted people living there, I found that the "american way" of preparing and dealing with Katarina is sad example of how a country can display such a horrid lack of respect for human life.

There's a reason you take everything you hear from the media with a grain of salt.

Remember, everybody in New Orleans saw this coming, nobody did anything about it. Their entire city sits below sea level with lakes on quite a few sides. If you fail to prepare you prepare to fail, and that's exactly what they did. People seem to have this thought that because they're suffering they're completely innocent, and that they should be felt sorry for.

I'm not trying to say they got what they deserved, but in a way they did.
