  • The Olympics 2012 thread

We're a few days in, but what the heck.

What did you watch on it today? Right now I'm watching the Brazil women's basketball team throw away a close game with Russia in the 4th quarter.

I don't even follow basketball that much, but damn, WTH? I end up pulling for Russia, they just played smarter defense.

I've only seen the American coverage of the opening ceremonies, and that was only because Fire made a remark about James Bond and the Queen parachuting into the stadium about a half hour before they aired it over here.

      Re: The Olympics 2012 thread

Apparently when facing a defender, throwing the basketball at her shins is a viable tactic for the home team and the ref ignores it.

Interesting strategy, Great Britan. I'm sure that will scare Canada.

As usual, the mainstream media never covers the events I want to see: Archery, Fencing, Judo etc...

I know, right? It's like they skip over all the interesting stuff so that we can focus on stuff like watching people run for 10 second races.

During the China Olympics the only thing I found that was worth tuning in for was gymnastics, because hey people are actually doing impressive stuff there.

                Re: The Olympics 2012 thread

Judo was pretty cool actually. My father and I are keen practitioners though listening to my father rant about every little mistake someone makes does make thing annoying.

Archery was good to watch though the end result was a forgone conclusion (South Korea wins everything). Fencing had a crazy south Korean woman have a tantrum over losing and she refused to leave the mat until someone physically dragged her away.

I've watched mens basketball, swimming (relays are the best,) gymnastics, road bike race (which was pretty cool,) synchronized diving, and skeet shooting. And while doing so I got my Miner to level 48! Woohoo!

I do like watching the Road Bike races too actually. The BBC coverage was awful though because the announcers kept goofing off on Twitter and playing online games.

And the Men's Gymnastics Final was awesome. shame Team GB lost out on Silver due to the Japanese appealing but oh well, he DID stick the landing and deserved to be scored for it and a Bronze Medal is still a Bronze Medal.

I agree with that. Why don't they cover the stuff that is actually interesting.... Who wants to see people run around in tights?

I just like those events because they have their roots in practical applications, and are more interesting to watch (to me).

The Skeet shooting was something else too - An American woman took the gold with 99/100 shots setting a new world record.

                          Re: The Olympics 2012 thread

From What I can tell, its because NBC wanted everyone to buy some kind of TV package this year. For full coverage of anything you need TVs on different channels made just for the events. The mexican restarant I was at earlier had Women's Basketball on on TV, Women's Volleyball on another and men's swimming on another.

And here I was hoping in 2012 with our smartphones, PCs, tablets and home consoles that they'd devise a more effective way to let people see what they want with some banner ads tossed in or something. NBC/Comcast is clearly still in the 80s with this stuff.

Protip: Most of the people that don't start dying off in the next ten years don't give a shit about cable anymore.

I don't watch TV and certainly don't have cable. So... is there any online site showing the games that isn't region locked?
