Netflix to stream Paramount, Lionsgate, MGM movies - Yahoo! News

Wonder if this also includes all those seasons of Star Trek TOS, TNG, and the others. I could never bring myself to buy the DVD and now not even the DD collections because they're so damn expensive.

They start adding movies from these studions Sept. 1st.

Wow the deal went through! I heard about it last week and was hoping it would! YAY! YAY! YAY! More movies to stream when I'm stuck for 6 hours hooked up to IV's! Honestly, it sucks balls in those rooms with the crappy ass tv's and limited cable!

Pretty exciting. Now if only they would start streaming Merchant-Ivory films.

$1 billion deal, five years. Pretty sure Netflix will see a return on that investment pretty quickly.

o.O wow, I mean at first I was like "That's a lot of money..."

Then I realized, wait a minute... yeah. Netflix likely got the better end of that deal. Oh well, I still don't give a shit since I'm Canadian

Re: Netflix to add Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM movies

I did a little math and while I agree this is a good deal for netflix, I'm not ready to call it great.

I used an average subscription cost of 12$ a month for this hypothetical situation, but my guess is that the average cost per customer is probably less. Netflix published that it had 15 million customers as of Jan.

                12$ x 12Months x 5years x 15mil customers = 10,800,000,000$

So that 1 Billion is approximately 10% of their net income. That seems like a large % to me.

In other news. I'm excited. The Instant watching pool has gotten pretty thin for me lately.

It's interesting that Dead Like Me was an MGM television comodity but it was already available on Netflix.

Re: Netflix to add Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM movies

I think some studios put movies up to "test the waters" because some of them are just so random.

Like Aliens, but not Alien or Alien 3,

The original Casino Royale, but not any other James Bond movie to steaming.

You have to keep in mind that things like Netflix, while growing in popularity, are only now being grudgingly accepted by Hollywood. They still think anything that lets you see movies or even access to music through the internet is the spawn of the devil and we should just be bound physical media and shitty cable packages forever.

Well, I didn't see any Bond films pop up this week from MGM, but Paramount did get Star Trek (2009) up and a couple of the older ones as well. First Contact and Wrath of Khan were already there. but now they have Search for Spock up as well.

Heard Blockbuster might be declaring bankruptcy pretty soon. Think I'll have to dust off my Netflix membership lol.

Re: Netflix to add Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM movies

Blockbuster is presently trying to do what netflix did, but only with DVDs and Blu Ray.

Given that Netflix already offers that and online streaming, I'm inclined to think its too late for Blockbuster to catch up. Pretty much anyone that has a gaming console, iPad, BD player and the like has Netflix streaming.

It doesn't help that Redbox is eating away at Blockbusters's business either.

Rental outlets wanted to believe Netflix and Redbox were fads we'd all get over, just like the music industry wanted MP3s to be a fad we'd all get over.

Now I'm wondering when ISPs are going to stop fighting the consumer and finding ways to cap bandwidth because stuff like this is too popular to go away and a superior service to their lousy cable packages. You'd think sports would be the last thing to go, but it seems like even ESPN and Hulu already have a deal going for on-demand streaming as well.

People just like media being containable and affordable to enjoy, who'dathunkit?

Re: Netflix to add Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM movies

Ya I was one of Netflix's first customers. I tested the service waaaaaaay back. lol Back then the turn around time for getting a new DVD was too long though. A lot of us said, on the forums, that until they fixed that, it just wouldn't work. I subscribed when it came out because they said they were going to improve turnaround but they didn't so I stopped. As soon as their distribution network got beefed up, I went back to them. At the time, it was funny because my son worked at BB. I used to spend a lot of money there, at least $50 a week and sometimes more. Then it suddenly went to half of that, I'd usually only buy used games/movies after that. (He got an awesome discount!) Netflix has come a long way and I told the guy that owned the franchise and people that were working at BB that it was going to cut into their business and if BB didn't get their shit together that they were going to be out of a job. Well the BB near us is now boarded up, guess I wasn't full of shit like they thought I was.

I wonder if I still have that movie rack that Netflix gave us testers...god that thing was a pos...lol

Well, they've gotten the whole lot of movies up just in the last few weeks. All the Trek movies save for Generations, Nemesis and Insurrection. Disney cleared Princess and the Frog just today, I guess that means the DVD/Blu-Ray sales on that finally dropped.

Wonder what else they put up today.
