  • Michael Bay plans to kill some of the Transformers

    Taken from SciFi Wire:

Okay, he didn't EXACTLY say that, but it seems like director Michael Bay and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are really, truly going to off some of our beloved Autobots, based on what we learned from a new Transformers 3 article in USA Today.

Here's what the piece had to say:

While Optimus Prime, Megatron and even Sam all have died and been resurrected, di Bonaventura says this film will have no do-overs: Die,and that's it.
Bay hints that there may be a lot of that. "As a trilogy, it really ends," he says. "It could be rebooted again, but I think it has a really killer ending."

There are other changes afoot for the third Transformers flick, which is filming now for a summer 2011 release. Bay and di Bonaventura acknowledge that there were problems with last year's Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, which was blasted by critics and even some fans despite earning $836 million worldwide—second last year only to Avatar.

Bay says it was "very hard" to put the second movie together quickly after the Hollywood writers' strike of late 2007 and early 2008, with di Bonaventura adding, "We tried to do too many things in the second movie, which didn't give enough time in any one of them. We were constantly jumping to the next piece of information, the next place."

So what's different? Well, for one thing, Bay reveals that they're getting rid of "the dorky comedy," meaning that Fallen's tacky and racially insensitive twin robots are "basically gone." Even better, there's a new villain in town: Shockwave, the laser-cannon-wielding Transformer from the original series who is obsessed with overthrowing Megatron and leading the Decepticons in a takeover of the universe.

Perhaps the movie's most spectacular new special effect will be model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who will play a new love interest for human hero Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) following the departure of Megan Fox from the series.

As for the plot, USA Today says it has something to do with the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union, and how the Transformers may have played a secret and dangerous part in it. Bay: "The movie is more of a mystery. It ties in what we know as history growing up as kids with what really happened."

Finally, and perhaps not surprisingly, Transformers 3 will be in 3-D, although it's likely that the movie will be converted in post-production and is not being filmed that way.

Just an FYI, take everything Bay says with a grain of salt. He's trying very hard to put out false info to keep the actual story a surprise until you see it in theaters.

Having said that, the twins have been seen on set in their new alt modes (they're both the same car this time) so by "gone" they most likely mean their over the top personalities.

Also, just to add some more news to this topic, Uncle Phil himself, James Avery, officially confirmed he'll be the VA for one of the new Autobots.

Re: Michael Bay plans to kill some of the Transformers

I still can't believe that piece of crap I saw in theaters last year is getting another movie. That was the closest I've come to asking for my money back. Hollywood really is hard up for good original ideas.
Very glad Fox is leaving, calling her overrated just seems to be candy coating it. Is that useless guy that played his roommate gonna be gone as well?

One question about the post: Why is Shockwave the conniving Decepticon? I thought in G1 he was the one Megatron trusted to run Cybertron while he was gone and that it was Starscream who was the one always plotting to overthrow Megatron? (I get that Bay is cool with rewriting the story, but it made it sound that Shockwave being the one trying to take over was already part of the mythos.)

Ya it's been a long time since I've watched the original series, my son is 27. lol I too thought that Starscream was the conniving instigator.

I do have the full set of the original series and planned to watch them with my eldest grandson, since he loves Transformers. The problem is that the first day I got them and popped them in to watch them with him, he sat for 5 minutes and then turned to me and said, "Gramma, those are not the REAL Transformers!" /sigh

I still can't believe it took people more than the trailers for the first movie to realize it'd be shit.

Starscream is the only Decepticon that tries to take over the throne by overthrowing Megatron, and Starscream is later off'd by Galvatron (Megatron rebuilt by Unicron aka Floating head in the movie haha). Bay ruined the Transformers and made horrible movies involving them, although there are pretty 3D models and animations there in.

Seriously, too many kids don't know shit about the classics. I remember seeing people in highschool wearing Transformers Shirts with either of the two faction's logos, and they honestly didn't know wtf it was, they just thought it looked cool. Then there's the time a friend of mine told me how he heard some younger kids talking about how the Storm Troopers were rip offs of the Clone Troopers or something... other way around, retards.

Except because of the movies Transformers is more popular and stronger then ever and is one of the top franchises today.

...dude, nearly half the Decepticons tried to take over control at one time or another. In the cartoon, Shockwave was a bumbling useless lackey, it was the comics who turned Shockwave into a total badass, where he was an evil, scheming treacherous bastard and actually was leader of the Decepticons for a while.

The original Transformers cartoon did not age well. And I say that as someone who's been a fan of not just Transformers, but just about every cartoon made in the past 50+ years or so. While it does have some gem episodes that stand out over the rest...the majority of the G1 cartoon really was terrible.

Not only that, but the Transformers themselves have been reinvented so many times, there's no single story or universe that really defines them as a whole any more. The Live Action movies are just another retelling of the story that's been retold a dozen times already. The first film, while it had it's problems, was still a good film and a solid origin story. The second film was ruined not because of just bay, but because it was being made during the writer's strike...where pretty much everything sucked. The third one has a much better chance at being great due to all the changes that have been made, the much longer production schedule and the fact it actually has writers.

That said, saying Bay plans to kill of TFs isn't really news because he's killed TFs in every movie so far. Jazz, Acrees, Jetfire, and pretty much every decepticon were all killed with no backsies.

                      This.
I LOVED this show growing up, but it was pretty painful to go back and watch as an adult. I'm sure kids would still enjoy it but a lot of the writing was weak and the animation on a lot of the episodes was terrible.

Feba: I actually did enjoy the first one for what it was. Two hours of letting me be nostalgic about my favorite childhood cartoon.

I enjoyed both movies for the entertainment value, though I will say that the 2nd one made me wince and cringe. I am really glad that the franchise is cranking out awesome toys and collectibles! (And with 2 grandsons I get to play with them!)

I might have enjoyed the second one if they had been a little more heavy-handed with editing. The movie was at least 30 minutes too long. Don't really need to see people running through the desert for that long. Its hot, there's sand, I get it.
