Interesting, I have astigmatism and my computer monitor is 37" and I sit 8-10" away from it and it doesn't bother me. And my astigmatism is so bad that I can't wear contacts. One of my lenses is like the bottom of a damn coke bottle.

I for one would run out and buy a 72" in a flash....if I were rich. lol I had a 60" at one time until it went belly up and I love the hell out of it.

And Mezlo.....omg....I had to run to the bathroom so I could laugh like a maniac when I read your "negative nancy" post! My husband is the poster boy for negativity so when he starts up my son and I call him negative nancy. lol Big burly 6'2" 250 pound guy and we'll do it out in public too....I love it when people giggle. lol

The important part here is 3D. And anyway, with improvements in technology will come improvements in accessibility. Computers were shit for lots of people, but now there's plenty of support out there for people with vision problems (larger buttons, easier to read text, magnification tools, etc.), and even the blind have tools now that make computers useful to them. One, I'd like to tell BBQ that this may be the sort of 3D TV that doesn't actually require you to wear glasses; that's an entirely different beast from what we're all used to.

Two, I wouldn't be surprised to see prescription 3D glasses eventually-- or more likely, more wearing of headmounted displays which could alter their appearance through settings to suit your prescription. Especially with augmented reality applications, displays like that could become more and more ubiquitous, like cell phones have.

---------- Post added at 04:52 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:41 AM ----------

Utilizing SENSIO® 3D technology to deliver 3D content over conventional 2D infrastructure, the new VIZIO XVT Pro Full HD3D TVs display stunning 3D content that the user can view with XpanD active-shutter glasses (sold separately). Unlike other 3D TVs that use passive stereoscopic imaging, VIZIO's Full HD3D TVs can display full 1080p video to each eye by rapidly alternating between the left-eye and right-eye images within the same visual space. The special active-shutter glasses, which communicate with the television over Bluetooth, then transform each lens from opaque to transparent in perfect synchronization with the images displayed on the TV, which allows for delivery of the full frame rate capable by the television for the ultimate 3D HDTV viewing experience.
Ok, so this is not that kind of TV, but the point stands that with TVs that don't actually require you to wear glasses of any sort, it will only appeal to an even broader base; including, just maybe, you, BBQ.

I don't pay attention to 3D anything. I can't see in 3D. My depth perception is abysmal.

Even with all the things the could do to make it more accessible, its still just a gimmick at the end of the day.

And for Gaming, there's no real interactive element to gain from that gimmick other than, "Oooooh, its jumping out at me from a box."

I gotta agree with TGM and BBQ here, 3D is way too damn gimmicky, dunno if anyone else said it, but people are BARELY getting caught up with HD, and now they want people to buy into 3D tech? In this economy of all things?! Yeah, 3D, call me maybe 5 years down the road, and i might just consider you.

Just a gimmick, like those there moving pictures, and the coloured cinemah. Really, why would anyone with the least bit of class watch prerecorded actors when they could enjoy a live performance with real people?

That makes sense. Wait five years before you introduce your technology; don't worry about making back the R&D costs you have to have to stay competitive in the field, or penetrating the market. After all, all of the most successful formats-- VHS, CD, DVD, BluRay, High Definition-- were adopted by the majority of consumers immediately upon release because of their low, affordable price points. Releasing technology before it's ready for mainstream appeal doesn't make any sense, your customers rich enough to afford it will be bored by the lack of material, and you risk causing a proletarian revolt from those who are angry that they can't afford it.

Re: Vizio announces 72'' 3dLCD, Breaks hole in time&space

I thought that I had 0% interest in 3D tech till today. I figured that since I can't see in 3D, why bother? Well today I had an appointment out west and it ended up being cancelled since the young lady had to be sedated and wouldn't be alert till tomorrow. So just as I was to travel home, I figured why not go see a movie since I have time on my hands! So I looked around and saw that an Imax was near and they had Avatar. I had just seen it but I did want to see it again and Imax was a bonus. Well I didn't realize that the Imax was 3D, I just thought it was a basic Imax movie or I wouldn't have went. Glad I did though. lol

I got there and after I paid the lady said "They'll give you the glasses at the door". DAMN....3D.../sigh So the previews start and I put on the glasses and sure enough....nothing. Oh well, I'll get to see the movie. So I take off the glasses and putz with my phone through the previews. Movie comes on, glasses go on, and I notice something......its so CRISP! so VIVID! so AWESOME! I might not have been able to enjoy the 3D effects of the movie, but I did enjoy the clarity of it. When I had seen the movie before I had lamented at a few of the bland features in some parts but now I saw that they weren't bland at all....they looked so much better!

So I talked with some of my geeky friends on the drive home and a couple of them talked about how 3D movies are filmed to give them that vivid nature. They laughed at me for paying extra to see a 3D movie when I couldn't really enjoy it. And I came to the conclusion that maybe 3D tech in a home television wouldn't be that bad of a thing. I personally think it will be a gimmick though because not enough people will appreciate it but I really wouldn't mind if it caught on.

Our mindless march toward needless technological advancements tends to be the undoing of many companies. Just look at all the game development studios that closed in the last two years.

It wasn't because of the economy, it was because the development costs for PS3 and 360 were too damn high, the expectations of gamers are also too damn high. They want Hollywood quality presentation and acting and they don't know what that costs, they don't know the costs of development.

That's why Factor 5, among others, is dead and gone. After Lair for PS3, they merged with another company that also quickly went under. All that, in the name of the glory of "high-quality" HD gaming.

Why people continue to play stupid while the likes of Nintendo and Atlus make smart decisions and survive, I'll never understand. But then it reflects our world's view - we all try to live beyond our means rather than within them. And people get frustrated with Nintendo for being practical and successful. They don't advance things that aren't needed and look to hook in people that their competitors don't go after. That is very much playing it smart. The problem with third parties on Wii is that they don't think on that level, just try to emulate what they thought Nintendo was doing.

But watch these companies pushing 3D go ahead and ram their heads into the wall anyway. The market is not ready and doesn't give a shit about this stuff. Took over ten years for HD to become a standard and affordable, I bet it will take a bit longer for 3D to take off. Its not like i need to see the evening news in 3D anyway.

3D is a worthless upgrade like Blu-Ray to me, just a limited fad for people with far too much money to waste it on. HD and DVDs{or digital viewing} are still working great for me, and are more than enough.

Just bought myself a 40" HDTV for use as my PC monitor last July, and mainly cause they forced us to upgrade to digital without needing a box for TV viewing on an analog set. I'm happy and the only thing I care about for the next 5-10 yrs is small upgrades to my PC to keep up with the latest MMOs at max settings...

Seriouly? Maybe i'm taking this out of context but I'm pretty sure Factor 5 went under because Lair blew dick. Sure they put alot of time and effort and money into developing it, but in the end they failed because they made it a nightmare to control or play. Oh and every other game they released was horrible also. (And I love star wars)

It's funnie, I can only think of one person (family and friends) that dosen't have an HD tv, and that's only because his got broken in shipping.

I told you TGM! Avatar in IMAX 3D kicked major ass! This is a rule of thumb for anyone that likes movies:

"If you want to see a movie and see it's playing in IMAX, go see it in IMAX! It's well worth it!"

You're taking what I'm saying wrong. First things first, how the hell you gonna make back the R&D costs if only a minute group of people can afford your gimmicky product? None of the above said formats was adopted shortly after its release Feba. Remember VHS had a long drawn out fight with Beta tapes, and DVD didn't really catch on till the early 2000's as well, even though they'd been released a fair time before that. BluRay and HDDVD also had their fair share of a battle to see which would be the new standard, BluRay won in the end as we all know, but only until recently have BluRay players become affordable enough for the masses to purchase.

You also gotta remember, its one thing to be so rich you got the money to spare on new tech right when it comes out, but even in todays economy, the rich are hoarding their money about as much as us common folk dude.
