Also, to this.... fellow who posted that drivel... I totally go and see movies like Charlie's Angels (/shudder, still can't believe my mom made me watch that with her) I go to see them for the story, plot, and deeper meanings (my god, those women were hideous, except maybe Lucy Lu)

Some movies, yes there are other meanings in them, however there is not always meaning in everything. Sometimes a flower is just a flower and nothing more. There is such a thing as overanalyzing things.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

LOL I haven't liked how Cameron Diaz looked in years. The last time I really liked how she looked was when she was in "The Mask".

One teensy tiny problem I have with your reply, TheGrandMom...

...When all is said and done, nobody ever said Avatar sucked. In fact, rereading the quote over, it doesn't say Avatar anywhere at all.

Conservatives don't necessarily think the movie is propaganda. They still think it's irresponsible to portray marines as evil in our current global environment. That isn't deep meaning that is subjective with Avatar. The marines are evil. Their question up for debate is: Is this irresponsible? I don't particularly care if it is or not. I'm merely pointing out that the movie can be examined at a surface level and still generate debate.

What I have a problem with is people telling others they're looking too deep into things when maybe, just maybe, that is how they enjoy movies. Stop telling me "It's just a movie." I don't need you tell me it's a movie. It is in movie theaters after all. Quite frankly, people telling me that "It's just a movie" is like me telling them "The Bible is just a book." If <insert any movie title> is just a movie, not worth getting upset about, why do people bother trying to derail a discussion about it?

        ...

We like Final Fantasy XI yet we complain about it all the time. Make what you will of this statement.

Actually right before you bring up his quote, you sway the conversation to Avatar and then in his quote:

            (including, for instance, James Cameron)
not to mention that the post is made in a thread about AVATAR. So yes, by the nature of the beast, you have made it about Avatar so my response was right on the money.

Also the first half of my post was talking about movies in general. I then specifically stated Avatar, well, since this is an Avatar thread. As for the suck comment, I was using that in the context about how people communicate. My point was that I don't mind someone having a reasonable discussion about the issue while being aware that others enjoyed the movie for what they feel it is, entertainment. I do not like someone that runs around saying "X movies sucked because it preaches to you about....blah blah blah" People need to communicate with one another without antagonizing each other. Like the saying goes, "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." Of course, some ahole will read into that and start spouting about it being propaganda too...

As for movies with a "theme", why do people get so wound up? First, they do not have to go see the movie if they don't want to. Simple as that. Don't pay to watch it in the theatre, rental, or by buying it. Then you won't be burdened with the subliminal message that they are selling. Seriously, I watched Happy Feet and many other movies about global warming and it didn't make me run out and install f**king solar panels and start dumpster diving! lol

What gripe do you speak of? That's the conservatives gripe. I don't have Irresponsibility argument. That's their argument that they're choosing to take sides on.

You and TheGrandMom are using examples I'm providing about the way other people talk about the movie as a strawman of what I'm actually trying to say. My point is that these people talking about the movie in this way should not interfere with your enjoyment of it. And if it does, that means you're invested in the movie far more than it simply being throwaway entertainment. So why do others bother trying to stop them?

That has been my position all along. I agree with you guys that they are seeing things that aren't there. There is absolutely nothing to discuss about this movie other than its technical proficiency. And that is precisely why I consider it throwaway entertainment.

And if you missed it, I'll say it again: these people talking about the movie in this way should not interfere with your enjoyment of it. So why do others bother trying to stop them if they truly have nothing invested in the movie? You enjoyed it. What do you care if somebody else criticizes it?

Here. I'll even do it now. "Avatar is overrated because it uses rehashed storytelling camouflaged by fancy pantsy computer graphics to hide its trite and predictable chain of events." There, was your enjoyment of Avatar somehow undermined because I said that? Or do you hold onto your belief that it is just a movie, nothing to get worked up about and everybody is entitled to their opinion, yet have the desire to tell me I'm wrong? Did I, at any time just now, say you're stupid for liking Avatar?

And my post had nothing to do with you, unless you are Mr. Josh Wimmer. My post was aimed directly at him, and people like him, that tell others to STFU, as noted at the end of my original post. You seem to be taking it rather personally for some reason....are you Mr. Wimmer?

Wouldn't be the most terrible thing ever. The quote, after all, was a reply left on a post about racism in Avatar as a response to other responses on that post about Avatar on an online blog that specifically discusses topics like racism where, presumably, readers go to talk about racism. Detractors are surprised that the people there would want to talk about things like Avatar in the context of racism? I'm shocked. SHOCKED I TELL YOU!

You took this Wimmer person's post so personally as feeling the desire to reply to me that he's wrong when he replied to a very specific kind person: people who come onto a post with an intent that's very clear. And feel the need to derail it with unintelligent comments like "It's just a movie" simply because they don't like what that comments on that post are talking about. Essentially, it amounts to being a comment against trolling.

It's like people who come specifically to an FFXI board to tell people there that "Why talk about FFXI? WoW > FFXI!" Nobody takes kindly to those sorts of trollish comments, nor should they.

This gripe. Even though this isn't technically your arguement, the fact that you posted it makes you a proponent for it.

No. It doesn't. Proponent means someone who is in favor of something. At worst talking about an argument that you disagree with makes one a presenter.

Just to jump right to Godwin, saying that posting an argument means you are a proponent of it is as wrong as claiming that someone saying 'Hitler wanted to kill all of the jews' makes them a Nazi.

And I was to know this person has a blog that addresses these issues blah blah blah?? You posted a quote and gave very little context. I posted my thoughts on people that can't communicate in a fashion that allows intelligent discussion and how I dislike it. I didn't take anything personally. I dislike people that do not communicate clearly and intelligently. Telling someone to STFU a couple sentences into a post is NOT communicating intelligently. Maybe if you had elaborated on what the post was addressing, what type of blog it was from or even linked to the blog, etc. then maybe my comment would have had a different vein. But from what I saw in your post and as to what I replied, I have zero regrets. I stand by it. People need to communicate more clearly and with more restraint if they would like to get their point across and have people actually listen to them instead of trying to jam their point down someones throat.

And I'm also done with this discussion. I've stated my point about this a few times now, its not going to change. I took the post for what it was, a short blurb that seemed addressed to the discussion at hand, the movie Avatar. Beyond that, how was I to know about the additional context?

AVATAR is being re-released this Friday at certain IMAX theaters in 3D. The movie has 8-9 mins of unseen footage that nobody will probably notice. I am actually debating seeing it a 3rd time

LOL. I told my mom to take my dad to see it, I know for sure he'd really like it. My mom really liked it back when I took her to see it and she said she would've liked to see it a second time before it left the theaters.
