Ok so I saw GI Joe earlier and I was wondering what some of the more diehard fans thought about the movie. I remember watching GI Joe when I was a kid. I didn't really remember much of the story, however I remembered most of the characters. After I got home from the movie I decided to get on wiki to look up a few things to see if they were in the actual comic or cartoon storyline and of course they either weren't or were skewed from the real thing.

I can't remember anything about the TV show since it has been about twenty years or so, but I went to see the movie today and I really enjoyed it, fairly good stuff, though as usual just watching Channing Tatum bugs me because he looks so much like my brother.sigpic

Re: A Real American Hero! (GI Joe Movie) Topic
G.I. Joe grew up with me. My mom would buy me Barbies but I'd just cut off all their hair (sometimes till they were bald) and then reenact scenes from G.I. Joe cartoons or Bonanza (Little Joe and his pinto pony were my favorites but Hoss was a close damn second!). LOL She finally relented and bought me G.I. Joes that I friggin wore out I played with them so much. I wish I could say I was an avid fan that remembers all of it but that was MANY MANY YEARS ago so....ya....thats not happening.
I can say that I did enjoy the movie. It was entertaining. If you are going there for a in depth story, forget it. It's a tried and true storyline that you can easily predict. But the action and the toys and the character development was terrific! One of the ways I rate a movie is how many times I fidget during it. Sitting for long periods is difficult for me because of pain so if I tolerate a movie well, it must have been good. I was only distracted twice. I spent more time whispering to my family about this line an actor said or that part with the cool toy. Very entertaining.Originally posted by FebaBut I mean I do not mind a good looking man so long as I do not have to view his penis.Originally posted by TaskmageGod I hate my periods. Re: A Real American Hero! (GI Joe Movie) Topic
Something I just saw, there is a GI Joe animated movie on Comcast OnDemand for free. It is called "GI Joe: Mission" the designs are from the Sigma 6 series. Watching it right now since nothing is on TV atm.
Anyways I really liked the movie and OMFG the Baroness was hot...If only those teenage girls weren't sitting behind me gawking at her whenever she entered the scene. I mean seriously, If you get shushed during a movie you are talking too loud, but if you get shushed during the trailers then you need to get out.
Movie SpoilersI absolutely hate when they kill off characters in comic book based movies, I mean seriously how many times did the Batman Villains get out of Arkham Asylum??? My brother agreed and said they must've had chickenwire wrapped around that place because people were always getting out.
I liked the epicness of Stom Shadow vs. Snake Eyes, but I was pissed that Storm Shadow got stabbed and fell into that ice at the end... I'm still pretty sure that he'll be back in the sequel, but was there really a need for that? I LOL'd at Cobra Commander's masked voice and I didn't like his mask for some reason.
There are very few movies that go til the very end before I figure it out (i.e. "The Big Picture") and this was one of them. I had forgotten about "Imhotep" (Zartan) getting away in the desert and at the end of the movie I was like "So what happened to..." and then I put together what the president said, "So that's what this is about..." and realized that when that door opened, that was his response to seeing himself.
All in all I really thought it was awesome and I knew when I saw the trailer that it'd be better than Transformers 2. I just hope that the negative reviews it got didn't keep people away from the movie. Hopefully it gets enough sales to warrant that sequel they were setting up for.Last edited by Durahansolo; 08-08-2009, 12:36 AM.{New Sig in the works}

I have to agree with TGM also, the character development was really good. I don't usually like flashbacks but they were done really well and they gave me just enough background about the characters to really care about them.sigpic

Re: A Real American Hero! (GI Joe Movie) Topic
So what you're saying is that this isn't as bad as Transformers 2, but its not quite as much of a rental as Terminator Salvation. Which is to say, its still pretty bad.
I need something that nearly reaches the awesomeness of Star Trek and Up.
I saw the trailer and they lost me on the fact it wasn't American-themed, but "international." That and they didn't have Sgt. Slaughter anywhere in the trailer. Then there were splosions and people in black jumpsuits and I came to the conclusion this was yet another "let's rape your childhood" flick that comes with casting decisions on par with "Let's cast Burt Reynolds as Boss Hog and Willie Nelson as Uncle Jessie."Last edited by Omgwtfbbqkitten; 08-08-2009, 04:48 AM.

I side with 'bbq.
Though it should be noted that, sharing his negativity, I think we both have in common that we haven't actually seen the movie.
Pop plot and huge SFX budgets. That's all I see.
Also, I just read Durahansolo's spoiler -- it's set up for a sequel?! It's great and all that sci-fi/geeky things are becoming cool. But this overdone format of making a movie, leaving room for a sequel (or making room, in the case of Transformers), ending the 2nd movie with an obvious need for a trilogy finish, and bombing the 3rd movie is getting so tired. I can't believe we keep falling into this.

Coming 2011: Watchmen 2! The portly newspaper assistant finds Rorschach's journal and takes up his mask! Night Owl fuses with Ozymandius and Dr. Manhattan gets mind-controlled!I think everyone has a little more respect for Alan Moore than to go that much further.
That said, it does seem to be the annoying trend of resurrecting some old franchise I loved (sometimes even with the original actors in it) and run it into the ground. Though it the case of Knight Rider, maybe the big screen Trilogy would have been the best way to kill it off.
I'm just tired of seeing things with very little concept or respect for the heart and soul of its source material. DC comic book flicks appear to have overcome this, Marvel movies only partially so, but everything else based off toys or video games or other geeky stuff has been pure shit.
I'm talking so bad that it gives the Halo anime a chance at being good. The benchmark is that low and on the highest end we have Batman Begins, Star Trek XI, the first and second Spiderman and The Dark Knight.
Take note of these movies, Hollywood, and fucking get it right.

Re: A Real American Hero! (GI Joe Movie) Topic
I agree that it's become a trend to trilogy everything. Fuck, they totally killed Matrix this way, and it really pissed me off. That said, I still enjoyed the movie, again, I didn't remember everything about GI Joe from my childhood because face it, I'm getting old, but it kept me entertained.
TGM says she rates a movie on how much she fidgets, I rate a movie on how reluctant I am to get up to pee when I have to go so badly I feel like I'm going to explode. Some movies I just do not want to leave no matter how badly I have to go. This was one of them.sigpic

Re: A Real American Hero! (GI Joe Movie) Topic
I loved the movie. I thought they did a great job with the characters. I felt they did a good job bringing a cartoon from the eighties with absolutely horrible writing to the 21st century while making the main plot somewhat realistic and interesting. I also think if you're going to make a franchise movie like this you have to have more than one. There are too many characters to have them all in one movie and make an all encompasing movie in just 2 hours. Most people can't stand movies that are even that long (not me).
I had one pet peeve with the casting of Brendan Frasier as Seargent Slaughter, I just couldn't make it work since the original, to me, was a larger than life character. My friend thought the General Hawk wasn't very good, but I didn't ask her why.
Anyways, Thumbs up, and I can't wait for the next one."All of the biggest technological inventions created by man - the airplane, the automobile, the computer - says little about his intelligence, but speaks volumes about his laziness." - Mark Kennedy

spoilerAlso, the only one who actually died in this was Cover Girl, and she barely had any lines. Storm Shadow will be back, a sword to the gut never kills a ninja when they fall into water. Though I do love how they left Storm Shadow's backstory ambiguous enough to wiggle in the fact that he's not actually evil.

As a child of the 80s, G.I. Joe was just as big for me as Transformers. And while I certainly loved RotF, G.I. Joe was the better written film. That doesn't mean it's not without it's faults (imo), but it's certainly better then what I was hoping for. With homages ripped right out of the cartoon but not too blatant that they were off putting, a decent portrayal of most of the major characters (I had no problem with the international team bit) and a great explanation of how Cobra rose to power and the source of their symbolisms. It also featured one of the greatest cameos in any film to date, ol' #99, the U.S.S FLAGG. To this day, the single greatest playset ever made. Overall, as a fan, I thought this was a great film and totally worth checking out if you enjoy some good old fashion action fun."I have a forebrain, my ability to abstract thoughts allow for all kinds of things" - Red Mage 8-Bit theater
