  • Star Trek (o.o)y

If Batman Begins was going back to Square One, then the new Star Trek is starting from Square One Version 2. Its the Trek you knew, yet also not the Trek you know and from the get-go you'll see it if you're a long-time fan. If you're not, its not important anyway. See, JJ Abrams made this so dedicated Trekkies and people unfamiliar with Star Trek could sit down and enjoy this movie.

The fun of the movie for Trekkies will be seeing how the story deviates from the original series and why it deviates, while the charm of the cast, the regular doses of comic relief and good acting will draw in the uninitiatied. Most of the cast puts thier own stamps on each character and really make the roles thier own, the only real exception here is Chekov and McCoy who emulate the original actors of those roles pretty faithfully, its clashes a little with the more original portrayals. Steel, eets preety nice to ear about zee planette Wulcan and all the "Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor" stuff.

Simon Pegg actually does a different Scottish accent for Scotty than James Doohan did, but he owns the role all the same. It was awesome that the cast him for it, he does it justice. He even has this funny little sidekick they just sort of threw in. John Cho (of Harold on Qumar fame) is a pretty cool Sulu, he's given a couple scenes to shine in but remains a minor character otherwise for the time being

Chris Pine makes a really good Kirk, very little of it resembles Shatner's style of delivery, but he tossed in a couple dramatic pauses just for fun. He's cocky, rebellious, in-your-face, passionate, gets it on with alien chicks and even vies for Uhura's attentions, just like a good Kirk should. Zachary Quinto's Spock tends to teeter on the brink of emotion, just beneath the surface of his logic, but its understandable considering some of the plot elements. He does Nimoy proud.

Uhura is also a very good character. She plays it hard to get with Kirk and seems to have a deep relationship with Spock and his emotional anchor. She gets a little more time than Chekov and Sulu do, but remains a fairly minor character with lots of future potential. Zoe Saldana is also smoking hot as Uhura.

The movie is fairly low on the technobabble, but there is a bit of time-travel discussion, which in an of itself can be dizzying. I'll simplify it. Remember Back to the Future Part II and that whole bit where Future Biff goes back in time and gives 1955 Biff the Sports Almanac? When Marty and Doc go back to 1985, Biff is king of Hill Valley.

Well that's why I said this is Square One Version 2 for Star Trek. Events take place with Ambassador Spock and Romulan Mining Captain Nero in the post-Nemesis TNG universe. These events end up having Nero thrust back into the past, driven mad by great personal loss but also unfortunately (for our heroes) armed with technology that far surpasses past Federation technology. He also has a mad-on for the Federation and Vulcans.

Nero winds up emerging from a time-space anomoly just moments before Kirk is actually born and from there is where things start to diverge from TOS cannon. So what we have here is a new alternate timeline. Everything from TOS to Nemesis still happens, but the result for the TNG universe is:

TNG universe Spoiler not fully covered by the movie

    Early/mid movie spoilers

The consequences of these events in the new timeline are pretty major. Some even shocking. This crew will be facing an altered version of the original series' universe, complete with new challenges.

The movie successfully revives cherished characters, brings a lot of great and frequent humor to the mix and while somewhat low on action, its high on special effects and the core principles that made the original Trek so great. Kirk and Spock are the heart of the movie and it shows them go from rivals to friends, the other members of the crew each get a moment to shine, which is just as it should be.

So if you like Trek, you'll like this movie. Easily one of the best Trek flicks ever done.
If you don't know a damn thing about Trek, you'll like this movie.
If you're a Star Wars fanboy, you'll wish JJ Abrams could steal the reins from George Lucas.

      Re: Star Trek (o.o)y

I started watching Star Trek when I was 6. I remember standing in front of the dial to block anyone from turning the channel. (No remotes back then!) Then when I was 13 I bought a custom made Science Officer (Spock) shirt. I wore it when I was 17 at the first Star Trek movie. I had the pants, boots, and even the Vulcan ears. Yes, I am a Star Trek geek.

So for this movie I dug up the same shirt and wore it again (AMAZING! It still fits!), put on a pair of black stretchy pants, and even dug out a pair of black boots. I love my Trek and I went into this movie with the mind that I had never seen a Trek movie/show before. I didn't want to apply anything I knew to it.......but it was impossible. I did enjoy the movie for what it was worth....entertainment. But when I think of TOS and this movie together, I get angry. Yes, I said it....angry. Remember I said I did enjoy it but I didn't love it. I didn't love how flat some of the lines were when they tried to emulate the old TOS characters. Some of the acting was flat (hello...Scotty?). I didn't like how it ignored some of the aspects of how Star Trek was developed. I really don't want to go into detail and its late so I'm not going to. Would I recommend people to see it? Yes, it was entertaining, though predictable. Would I recommend an avid ST fan to go see it? Probably not.

I'm going to see it witha group of 7 on monday night, I must admit I am looking forward to it, the teasers do make it look fresh, like how they updated James Bond which i thoroughly enjoyed, seats booked (ones with legroom and at the back for best view )

You get to book specific seats? Must be nice.

Hate to say it, TGM, but thats why I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. I hated TOS. I like TNG alright, but TOS was just bad.

Watched it last night and I have to say that it is very good. I caught myself quoting old school lines even though I am not a Star Trek fan.

Nice video btw on par with the movie:

Thats common with people that didn't grow up with it. Back in the day, sci-fi was very uncool and very rare on tv. It's probably one of the reasons people glommed onto ST when it was on tv.........but not in enough numbers unfortunately. (Remember I'm talking about back in the 60's and not the reruns.) I was even a huge fan of the cartoon! LOL

Dunno what was funnier there the spoofing of criticism or the line the closed with, "Coming up: An elderly black woman continues to stalk President Obama and sheds a single tear when he does anything."

Anyway, I do find the people who seriously complain about making things more accessible to the public to be amusing. People who complain about the Wii making gaming more casual - doesn't anything one does on a regular basis become casual anyway? People complain about the recent Persona and upcoming remake being too "J-Pop" when its probably one of the better ways to keep female gamers hooked in than making the male protagonists androgynous to appeal to said same demographic.

Times change and to keep things relevant and successful, sometimes you have to try to widen the demographic a bit here and there. Its not like its going to make these newcomers sprout glasses, pocket protectors and then join in on your tabletop D&D sessions anyway.

I really really liked it and I'd like to see it again. I can't wait til the sequel. My co-worker told me that her sister was in the movie as a extra. I thought it was cool that her name appeared on imdb.com

Made me think of the last episode of Freaks and Geeks.

Other than that, people like to feel special. They want to be in the small group that likes something most people don't.
TGM: I liked a few of the original movies, 2 and 6 mainly, like 4 alright and 1 was just fucked up enough to be interesting. My dad loves TOS, but try as I might I could never get into it. I think by the time I saw it, a lot of the stuff they did was considered cliche' and campy, whereas it was fairly original in the 60's.
I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. I'm wondering if I'll pick up on the continuity changes since I was never into TOS that much.

EDIT: Tbh, I don't know what I'd think if the same type of makeover/reboot were done to Star Wars. Possibly the same thing the trekkies/trekkers are thinking about this.

Yeah odeon cinemas on the Uk you can book seats online, I always go for the at the top of the steps at the back so I get a good non neck crunking view of the screen, the seats have no head rest so i always take a small cushion and place it agaisnt the wall the seat backs onto, plus being on the end of the steps means I am not limited for leg room as I am 6' and they seem to make cinema seat leg room space here in the Uk for midgits.

If I can't get those seats or the ones on the other side of the auditorium I will look for another showing time. As it only started here in the Uk on Friday, they do get busy and its the only cinema in Lincoln and up to 30 miles surrounding and only has 6 screens so booking is essential.
