My father, my brother, and I all agree: This was the best Star Trek movie made to date.

And let me clarify our situation: We're a two-generation family of trekkies. My father has a Klingon outfit, and both VHS and now DVD copies of every episode of Star Trek ever (Most actually recorded from their original airing dates), as well as a full collection of movies.

The actors all did their jobs very well. The new portrayal of Kirk and Spock levels heavy doses of respect along with some nice deviations (which are completely understandable given the events of the movie.)

The times when the personalities of the actual characters themselves seemed 'flat' were only during the minor parts of their roles, IMO. Each had a moment to shine as individuals, even if it was brief for some characters.

I won't spoil any further plot points as to what happened, but this does open up an avaunt for an entirely new edition of the Star Trek series on television. One that I would gladly watch with the same loyalty that I had for the majority of the franchise.

Is it different? Yes, absolutely! But that's part of what makes it worthwhile to watch again. Star Trek fizzled out because it pretty much hit all points in its long lifetime. This rendition proved that it was more than possible to spark new life into and old classic, and I'm very anxious to see where they'll go from here.

I always applaud after a good movie. Just my way of respecting the hard work and art that went into it. I'm usually either the only one that does or I am the first and others join in. LOL

The original Star Trek Season 1 just came out on Blu-Ray so I wouldn't be surprised within the next few years. I'm pretty sure by the time the new movie comes out on Blu-Ray, they might have all the seasons from the original series out.

Then I was talking about how great the movie was and somebody in the linkshell didn't know the movie came out and thought it was the 2nd movie. I was trying to explain to him that the movie came out already and this was the first movie of this newtype series, but he was just confused altogether lol.

I agree with Hyrist, if they made up a new tv series based on the new movie, i'd watch it. I've seen alot of Voyager, TNG, and bits of DS9 and most of the Original Star Trek episodes that they showed in 2.0 on G4. For some reason though, I wasn't drawn into Enterprise.

Romulus is destroyed (they may have to incorporate that fact into the forthcoming MMO since its also post-TNG).

In the new timeline, the planet Vulcan is destroyed, leaving only a handful of the race behind. Nero stranded Ambassador Spock on a neighboring planet to make him watch it happen. That's a very sick thing to do.

These were some moves that took real balls to do. But then, that's part of what will make the new timeline something of interest to watch unfold. Also leaves me inclined to believe that the only part of the original canon here that matters at all is that "The Cage" likely still happened.

I also heard Cardassia's name dropped a couple times. I don't think they appeared in the original series timeline, perhaps something changed that sped that meeting up. They got trade relations going with them if they're getting Cardassian wine, I guess. I like the Cardassians, they're a race of pathological liars, Garak and Dukat were my favorites.

All it seems to take sometimes is a little mucking around with time travel to make something interesting. Change a few things and you have a chain of events that lead to new possibilities.

Ok so this HUGE shocker was TOTALLY unnecessary and out of character. It's one of my biggest complaints with the movie.

DO NOT LOOK if you haven't seen the movie yet. This is a BIG OMG to people that know TOS.

Ok, so Spoke and Uhura??? WTF? Was that really necessary? No, it wasn't. There is ZERO...ABSOLUTELY ZERO effect on the plot of the movie. Spock doesn't show emotion...he just doesn't. It's something that was a HUGE part of the original series AND it was also one of the reasons that the female population continued to watch! To have a guy that you want to be emotional, a guy that you want to see smile, cry. love and he just won't....thats the bad boy! And you know women are drawn to bad boys. So they took the best part of Spock and threw it out the fucking window. Seriously, was that a fucking smart thing to do? NO. And then to top it off they anger a huge part of the fanbase by doing it. Oh yes, I know this movie was made to grab more fans but HELLO THERE IS ALREADY A HUGE ST FANBASE OUT THERE!!! Wouldn't you want to grab as much of that as you could too?? And this one simple thing, that they didn't even have to have in the fucking movie, is really pissing people off. Honestly, this was a huge fuck up.

Haven't watched the movie, clicked on the spoiler... and it doesn't surprise me at all. Didn't have any expectations whatsoever about this one, specially if it was aimed at attracting younger audiences. /shrug

And of course I don't think there's a chance of this movie taking the place of First Contact as my favorite ST movie, Nemesis ranks second (ONLY because of that awesome fight between the Enterprise + 2 Warbirds against the Scimitar, although the movie itself was pretty ok) with Generations in third.

So yeah, they could've made a Star Trek vs Star Wars movie with only teen characters and I wouldn't have cared at all.


As long as those Blu-ray versions of TNG and DS9 actually happen everything else matters not.

ULTIMATE HAXX SPOILERS FROM MOVIE {caps}

Ok so since I didn't see much of the original Star Trek series, I believe I am correct in assuming that the movie took place at a alternate timeline than the original series. In the original series did the same events happen with Spock's mother dying? I guess I can understand Spock struggling with wanting to understand being being half human and Vulcan. I also guess in that same breath that the death of his mother could've pushed him over the edge which caused him to embrace his human emotional side rather than the Vulcan emotionless side. I'm pretty sure that Spock/Uhura was a setup for future movies TGM, so it may not have much plot development atm but I'm pretty sure it'll be used in the future.

I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of people angered at what was done with the movie, but I'm pretty sure there were also quite a few new people attracted to the series as well. I'm going to have to snag up the Star Trek original series episodes so I can watch them, along with the movies as well.

So yeah, they could've made a Star Trek vs Star Wars movie with only teen characters and I wouldn't have cared at all.

Ya I'm trying to be open minded about most of the movie. I could go ON AND ON AND ON....believe me. But I'm just picking a little nonsensical little piece of shit that doesn't even need to be in the movie instead of gloming onto the MASSIVE AMOUNTS of shit they decided to fuck with.

As a stand alone sci-fi movie, I enjoyed it immensely. As any part of the ST universe, it failed miserably.

I'm not going to hold them strictly to the events of the original series. Basically everything, to a very large extent, since the birth of Kirk is being influenced by this Romulan dude and can't be taken as canon. It could I suppose, but still. New events = new timeline and not the events of the original. I'm very curious to see it, I tend to be picky about my star treks.

DEEP SPACE NINE FOREVER!!!!!!!!

Each series had something interesting and enjoyable about it, yes even Voyager, so I'm not dissing 'em, except for Voyager, when I say that Deep Space Nine was my favorite. I liked the characters, I liked how they built them up, and besides a few things at the very end, I really enjoyed the show.

Doesn't matter if I was Vulcan or not, I'd hit it. Let's not kid ourselves, Zoe Saldana is the eye candy here for the guys. Letting Kirk bag Uhura would have been too predicable, plus it made that whole transporter scene really funny. Not only did Kirk discover the woman he was chasing was already taken, Spock knew her first name and he didn't.

Who knows, though, he might still get to kiss her if that season two scenario happens.

Uhura was also Spock's emotional anchor and it was pretty clear they had something going the moment she insisted upon being on the Enterprise and Spock caved in within seconds. She's that hot.

This take on Spock was a little more rebellious, too, I think. "To what disadvantage are you referring?" Yeah, that scene was the closest a Vulcan would come to saying "Fuck your science academy, you don't talk about my mother!!!"

Also to answer Durhan's question, Vulcan wasn't destroyed in the original series, it exists all the way through. Ambassador Spock's mother dies of natural old age

I did feel kinda bad for the Co-Op that I work with. She's 19 and went to see the movie, and she told me that she was lost lol. I think it was mainly because she had probably never watched the original Star Trek before. I didn't even ask her what part confused her because i would've had to go into "One long...Incredibly unbroken sentence, moving from topic to topic. So that no one had a chance to interrupt, it was really quite hypnotic." to try to explain it all.

I had a friend tell me that Sylar was born to play Spock.

To say I'm not a huge fan of the director would be an understatement, however, that aside, I enjoyed the film immensely. Sure, I could pick it apart like the two pricks behind me in the cinema who probably weren't old enough to catch TNG the first time around but I felt that as a movie it was entertaining and could have two positive effects. Namely, it continues the Star Trek tradition for another decade and leads the next generation of sci-fi fans to catch up and appreciate all the previous movies / series, and also that it has the added bonus of prompting the return of a new Star Trek tv series which until now has looked all but improbable after they pulled the plug on Enterprise.

The cynical part of me feels Abrams wanted to add to his name by making a huge, irreversible impact on a much-loved and very static universe and everything down to the fuck-off huge, "DIRECTED BY J J ABRAMS" that appears across the screen literally seconds after the closing scene only serves to reinforce that.

I agree with TGM's spoiler point... but that's probably because I grew up watching them as well (Although if you watched the original runs it sounds like you have a couple years on me).

The whole Spock/Uhura thing grated. It was not consistant with either of their characters. I know why they put it in (sex sells) but it was still off for them both.

I actually enjoyed it, I went to see it with a fresh perspective and enjoyed its fast pace, humour etc. I did feel the story was kind of thin ont eh ground, but the effects and action covered that up. Also a few nice character supprises etc... (i w ont say more I don;t want to spoil it )
