Ok so I have a Nokia XpressMusic phone which doubles as my mp3 player. I bought some test songs for it off iTunes and they worked fine so I figured I'd be clear to go ahead and buy a bunch of stuff. Wrong. About one in five songs I got is in protected m4p format which my phone can not play, as opposed to m4a which it can. There's software out there to convert the files to an unprotected format but it costs like $35 and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $35 to listen to the $12 bad purchase I made, but pirating software to listen to the music I legally bought for the first time in ten years just seems retarded. So I've got two questions. Does anyone have a low-cost solution to the file format thing? Putting that aside, is there any way to tell whether a song off iTunes will be in m4a or m4p before I buy it?

Re: Little iTunes help?
Protip: Don't buy music from iTunes.
Other than the converter software (which I would just recommend you torrent), I'm not really sure of any other work-arounds. The problem with buying music from online providers is the DRM music you find yourself stuck with.
Maybe someone else knows some better ideas.

Re: Little iTunes help?
I had heard that iTunes had dropped DRM in exchange for a different price structure but it seems I heard wrong.

Re: Little iTunes help?
Did you try right clicking on the song and then going down to "Create MP3 Version"? Some of the music can be converted through itunes now if it is DRM free, if not then you'll have to use a external converter. I had downloaded a song awhile back only to notice the same thing and I found the right click thing out on accident.{New Sig in the works}

Re: Little iTunes help?
When I right click it I get "Create AAC version" which I think would be good enough, but then I get the message that I can't convert it because it's protected.

Ok, so barring conversion does anyone know of a way to tell whether a song is DRMed before buying it? I can deal with a decreased selection, but I'd rather not play roulette with my money.

Bah ok I figured it out. You can get DRM-free music but only from certain record labels. If you bought a DRMed track from one of the labels offering DRMless music you can get it removed for $0.30, which wouldn't be too bad except only one of the 14 songs I want to listen to is from such a label. Screw it. Back to pirating music. -.- If I want to support the artists I'll buy their damn t-shirts.
