Probably some dream sequence merged with a flashback, again, Wolverine's memory isn't the most reliable thing.
Of course, they never said in the movies that he didn't have claws before the experiment and for a long period of time in the comics, Wolverine had bone claws minus the adamantium. He even took on a more animalistic look for a while. Again, they can take liberties with this just as much as making Spidy's webbing organic rather than stuff he shoots out of cartridges.
Now you know how other people feel when various people continue to go on and on about how awesome they think FFVII is compared to other RPGs. Except The Dark Knight came out this year and is very relevant and topical when it comes to the discussion of comic book movies.
Gushing about the first game to pop your RPG cherry 11 years ago, however, gets old really fucking fast.
