See its a little different for me. I've been a nerd/geek for a looooooooong ass time. Nowadays its cool or "in" to be a nerd/geek but back in my day it definately was not. There weren't comic book movies, hell if you were caught reading a comic book outside of your circle of friends you never heard the end of it. Say you were a Star Trek fan and people would back away from you. I've been egged, stuffed in a locker, and even pissed on........so ya I've pretty much hidden some of my hobbies most of my life.

Seeing all of these sci-fi/comic/nerdy movies and shit coming out makes me one happy camper. I don't have to lie about where I'm going on Friday night (No I'm not going to see that Star Wars movie, I'm going to volunteer at the local food pantry!) because its ok to be a nerd/geek nowadays. Hell some people that aren't are even enjoying some of the things us nerd/geeks have been for years.

I think the concept of a second Tron kinda deflates what the original one went through: the entire idea of Tron (or more appropriately, the overriding concept) was bringing a back-lit item to the foreground... heck, they had to do every frame of that movie by hand when you talk about the fancy lighting. The neon back-light had to custom imposed over the actual frame. By doing it mostly with CGI, I feel it kinda destroys the hard work done over the original. But, all that being said: Disney is doing this one as well. Between them and Pixar (assuming Pixar will be doing the CGI), I think they can really do well with it. It'll be difficult, but I think if anyone can pull it off, they can.


Also: Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn again? 25 years of computer advances in this movie FTW.

Ya the days of hand drawn/done are quickly dying out. It's a god damn travesty. Maybe by the time you all are grandparents it will make a comeback and you can sit there and say "Ya back in my day...."

You really don't have any idea of what it was like back then. It is WAY easier to be a geek/nerd nowadays. I have a few godchildren that range from 8-22 yrs old. Out of the 5, four of them are nerd/geeks. We often talk about things and I would much rather be one in this day and age than back when I was that young. It may not be totally accepted but its a hell of a lot better thats for sure.

I'll put money on they're not anything of the sort. Everyone and their dog calls themselves a geek if they can sit, press a button and find porn. A child can reboot a machine and their retarded parents think they're some sort of prodigy.

The 'cool geek' has an Apple, an iPod and plays the most popular games.

They don't know how the machine works nor are they inclined to find out.
They don't know the little white box makes them there sounds.
They don't know how clicking on that icon draws all them purdy pictures.

Playing games doesn't make you a geek. Using a computer doesn't make you a geek. Owning the right brand of electronic doesn't make you a geek.

A geek is someone who couldn't help but rip something apart to know what it did. They want to know why it does things. How to break it. What it can be made to do.

Remember when you had to reboot your machine to use a custom, painfully written config.sys and autoexec so you could run that game you just found on the BBS? Remember when amazing graphics was CGA? Remember when you bought a computer magazine to get the software you had to transcribe into an editor by hand? Remember a time before the NES? When Atari was king then died? When the phrase World Wide Web meant something and was not synonymous with the Internet?

Guess what, you're not the only one.

OK, I've been around almost as long as TGM and I'm still a proud geekette

And Mhurron, does it qualify if I still have an old IIci running System 7 - And can actually write System 7 apps? Is that geek enough? Or do I need to go out to my storage unit and get my LISA? Or my first Mac?

Just because I can code in C++ does not make me a geek. The fact that I can do higher math does not make me a geek. No, The fact that I can do all those things and STILL would rather sit on my bed and read comic books or play RPG's - THAT makes me a geek.....

....And PROUD of it!
