Today Paramount Pictures signed a deal to distribute the next five films produced by MARVEL Studios, which include MARVEL's plan to build upon their popular AVENGERS comic franchise.
The first film covered by the deal will be Jon Favreau's IRON MAN 2, which opens May 7th, 2010, followed by THOR, rumoured to be directed by Kenneth Branagh, on July 16th, 2010. Up next is The First Avenger: CAPTAIN AMERICA on May 6th, 2011, which will be the last tie-in origin film before THE AVENGERS on July 15th, 2011.
The deal also covers Favreau's IRON MAN 3, which is currently TBA.
Favreau's been chatting up IRON MAN 2 a bit more lately. Apparently he wants to delve into the alcoholism arc of the comics and model Stark after J. Robert Oppenheimer, which will give the needed excuse to bring the War Machine character to the table. He said he's currently planning on how to make the classic IRON MAN nemesis, The Mandarin, more applicable to the modernized films, dropping the communism metaphor explored in the comics. We'll likely see a lot more on the film beginning next year.
MARVEL has not yet released any details on the next HULK film. The series will likely remain in the hands of Universal for distribution.
