  • What would make you switch to Bluray?

Well, given that HD-DVD is dead, and there's not much else to challenge it, what will it take to get you to switch from DVD to Bluray?

Personally, boxsets. If companies start releasing boxsets of series (ones I'm interested in, of course) on Bluray, I'd probably switch very quickly. Having an entire season (or series!) on a single disk would be very nice, not to mention would significantly shrink my DVD shelf

Agh, I knew I was forgetting something in that poll. Oh well.

Personally, I plan on getting a PS3 rather than a dedicated player (dedicated players don't have much of a point really, since in three or four years everything and your dog will probably be able to play it), so it's more a matter of it becoming a more reasonable purchase than anything else.

Re: What would make you switch to Bluray?

While I do have a PS3 so I technically have access to Blu-Ray I don't actually use it much. My main reason is you get almost the same content as a DVD and some of the movies that would be best on Blu-Ray aren't. I.e. Transformers & Beowulf.

And btw I mean they would be best, because imo anything computer animated/enhanced just looks better on Blu-Ray. You can only make RL look so much better lol. And a DVD is so much cheaper than Blu-Ray.

If they could make some of my favoirte anime box sets into 1 Blu-Ray I would be more than willing to pay $100+ for that single Blu-Ray disc. Ranma 1/2 on 1 Blu-Ray.../drool. lol ^^

I know my wife would love to have her favorite T.V. series placed on a single Blu-Ray disc instead of having to change discs every 3-4 episodes.

For there to be a visual leap that actually justified the price versus what's already good enough on DVD.

At present the technology does not bring a visual leap that is THAT signifigant to be worth the asking price.

Eh, it's just a matter of time. Eventually there'll be some combination of lower prices, content I'm interested in, having the money for both a new TV and a player, etc. Technology doesn't really compel me the way it did a few years ago. I end up upgrading things eventually, but it takes a lot longer to seem worth it vs. other things.

This, mostly. And TV's that don't cost thousands. I'm a cheap ass.

                And...

                This.

But not even Han Solo can make me pay thousands for a player and TV to make it worth hooking up.

                So mostly money.

Also: BBQ's point. It really isn't enough of a visual difference even on an HDTV of AWESOME to justify the money spent yet.

Re: What would make you switch to Bluray?

i can't justify spending the $$$ on something that requires me to purchase 'newer' versions of the movies I already own.

i'm with Murphie on cheaper players, it's a start.

And those 2 words can mean significantly different things to different people. I do think that with the right setup there is a significant difference. For people like that, it is worth the price. At first we had a 60" with a 7.1 stereo setup and now we have a 52" with a 7.1 stereo setup. We use our PS3 for the Blu player. When we watch movies at night, turn off the lights, and jack up the volume, its like being in a theatre. Also the type of movie influences this, movies with special effects, action flicks, etc are the ones that really pop and worth the $ on Blu. So I would say that the present technology does bring a visual leap that is significant to be worth the asking price to a percentage of people.

Lucas seriously doesn't need ANOTHER excuse to bastardize it.

I refuse to buy DVDs any more. They look blurry and noisy compared to Blu-rays on my 50" 1080p TV. The software price premium isn't as much as you'd think, as long as you're smart about shopping for prices.

Totally agree. Its usually cheaper to buy the discs online because there are a lot of one day only sales or b1g1f sales. (Watch dealnews.com - Find the lowest prices and coupons on computers, laptops, digital cameras, iPods, MP3 players, HDTV for some good sales on movies...and lots of other stuff.) I have over 500 DVD's after paring down my collection and there is no way I'll be replacing them all at once, but over time taking advantage of good sales, I'll definately consider it for most of them.

                            Thank you.

Anything released on Bluray will be the crappy versions he can't stop making 'better'.

As for the poll, once I get a PS3 and a HDTV, I'll probably start buying Bluray media.

Re: What would make you switch to Bluray?

In regards to a couple of the reasons put forth.
Stand alone players are expected to drop in the 3rd and 4th quarters this year. Some will be less then $300 by Christmas.
TV shows are expected to start coming out more by the end of this year, early next year.

I'm in the same boat as Icemage. Unless I REALLY want to see it and its not coming to BR in the foreseeable future, then I won't buy it on DVD. i.e. I've been putting off buying There Will Be Blood until it comes out on BR next month.

Obviously, for BBQ its not an upgrade that justifies the price. But for some other people it is. There really is quite an improvement in picture quality and for me that was enough.
I'm looking forward to watching some older movies on BR. You can see the film grain, which imo is pretty damn cool.
