I for one would like to know what's silly about not supporting companies who do things you find wrong.

Because nothing is ever perfect so denying yourself enjoyment and bad mouthing is silly. Yes Feba, *gasp*, I have an opinion just like you do and I'm allowed to voice it.

Wanting to enjoy the content while simultaneously declaring your hatred for the company supplying it is kind of silly.

It has nothing to do with companies being perfect, it has everything to do with the way they treat people, and the actions they take. You might not care what your money supports, but some people do. And really, it's better than being a hypocrite, talking about how much you hate something while still supporting it.

You could say the same of every boycott ever. If you opposed child labor, why would you buy shoes stitched in a sweatshop in southeast Asia? If you oppose the loss of jobs in your country, would you not try to buy locally made goods? If you oppose the oil industry, why would you buy a gas guzzler? If you opposed racism, would you eat dinner at a segregated restaurant?

There are some cases where you can't avoid a product (for example, you're a drummer, and you need a fairly large vehicle to transport your drum kit to gigs in order to make a living); but it's absolutely disgusting to support something you are strongly opposed to for the sake of 'enjoyment'.

Exactly, it's silly and hypocritical. But I never saw anything about him wanting to enjoy it, just that he wouldn't consider it as long as Sony saw money from it (although, small note, buying a PS3 actually COSTS Sony money; although I'm not sure how much of a licensing fee they make off BR discs). If he was harping on about how evil Sony was while playing Resistance, yeah, but not just saying he's opposed to them.

Except that he made a point to say that he would buy, but only if he could find a way to keep the parent company from making money on the purchase.

If you're not buying something because you don't support the practices of a company that's profiting from it, and you can buy it without the company profiting, there's no real problem. Although I think he meant more "if Sony didn't make money off it, I wouldn't have a problem", instead of "if I can find a way to cheat Sony out of the money, I would love to have this". I mean, if he was going around being pissy about Blu-Ray having exclusive content or the PS3 having exclusive games (outside an argument about games being exclusive in general), yes, but when you're just opposed to a company that's kind of the point.

Some of you might be too young to know how and what Sony Corp has done to screw American consumers. Its also apparent that some of you are too young and cant help your young mind from flaming every chance you get. There is a topic here and I just threw in my two cents in about the subject.

The fact that the industry has allready created a standard format for audio/video i.e CD/DVD. Sony AGAIN takes it upon themselfs to give the middle finger to the aggreement they gave and had a hugh part in the creation of that new format.

                      Historic reference:
                      Beta Vs. VHS.

I'll get one when I hear word of Bluray format is no longer patent protected.

No one is flaming anyone and I am far from being too young to remember Beta vs. Vhs. In fact, at that time, I was married with a child and had a HUGE betamax player that took up nearly the entire top of our cabinet Curtis Mathis (there's old for you) tv. I still think its silly.

Re: What would make you switch to Bluray?

Ironically, I used a similar line of reasoning to this to explain why I could no longer listen to Pearl Jam or Metallica for political reasons. Pearl Jam scheduled a SLC tour stop towards the end of a tour, got about 4 days out, and canceled the entire thing because they didn't like Ticketmaster's monopoly on sales, then weren't able to bring up an alternative system in time. Metallica was a band that first became popular because their friends would hi-speed dub their demo tapes and give them to other people.
A decade later, they're actually popular, and they start their own crusade against Napster because their fans are doing the same thing with higher quality mp3's now. I consider that kind of hypocritical.

While these are both probably decent political reasons for not liking either of these bands, when I actually explain them to people the result is usually: Dear god, Brian, you're a complete tool!

I've had to find other reasons to loathe these groups. For instance, Pearl Jam may have made "Jeremy" and "Even Flow", but every album since then has blown goats. Somehow this band I really liked managed to make "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town", and "Last Kiss". These are two songs that make me suicidal whenever anyone forces me to listen to them. Well, I guess it would be more of a murder/suicide if at a girlfriend's, or killing spree/suicide if at a party. Metallica, is the band that made "St. Anger". I could probably stop right there. Or I could point out that every song their fans actually remember the lines to was made before 1996. After this point, you generally just hope they'd stop writing new stuff.

I think there's kind of a stigma associated in any former English Commonwealth areas with applying political reasoning to non-political things. For instance, my little sister came home from college one Thanksgiving and announced that she liked watching Oprah because she supported her for being a "positive, strong, black role-model on daytime television." Grandma looked at her like she'd just grown a second head. Since then, she's learned to just say that she likes Oprah because Oprah interviewed that guy from Gray's Anatomy. Now she and grandma can watch it together.

My suspicion is that Dim Mahk probably doesn't like Sony for any of a number of better reasons, he's just fixated on the politics of Betamax. For instance, SOE was spawned from Sony's internal corporate culture. Those of us who played Everquest way back when probably remember what the customer service was like. That isn't to say it was any good before they took over, (Most of us who remember Verant Interactive's customer service before they were bought out will probably find themselves placing a power drill to their temples and muttering about "making the bad memories go away"). It's just that in the first year or so after the buyout, service was actually worse, if that was even considered possible. If Sony has the internal picture of the customer such that it can spawn a horrific travesty like Sony Online Entertainment, then it stands that we could expect similar treatment when our new Blu-ray player overheats or starts getting read-errors. I fear that first customer service call to Sony. I know what to expect, somehow everything will be my fault, the product works just fine, and maybe sometime near the end of the rant I will actually hear how to fix it, but I still fear making the call.

I think Dim Mahk probably has a number of reasons like that, he's just hopped up on the wrong soapbox for this culture.

Re: What would make you switch to Bluray?

You do realize that "Last Kiss" was a cover right? A charity cover single is hardly the right pick to point out the demise of a band's creative drive.

I actually think their decision to boycott Ticketmaster was something to be applauded. I agree though that their material is sporadic. Ten was a solid album front to back, though I liked Vs and Vitalogy a lot as well. Yield was better then some of their other stuff. No Code and their self titled album were mostly worthless. I actually enjoy their live albums a lot more than most of their studio stuff.

I totally agree on the Metallica points.

I still find it funny you hate one band for standing up to commercialism while you hate another band for standing up for commercialism.

What? Do you seriously not recognize the fact that standards are replaced, and that Blu-Ray provides much more room for content? Standards have been improving for as long as humans have had written word-- rocks, to scrolls, to books, to pdfs; wax cylinders, LPs, cassettes, CDs; VHS, DVD... it was going to be replaced eventually. Do DVDs have the ability to carry HD content? Sure, with newer codecs you could fit a significant amount of HD content on a DVD disk. But players would have to be upgraded and replaced anyway, not to mention people (read: idiot consumers) would need to learn the difference between "DVD HD" or "DVD2" or whatever you want to call it and regular DVD.

Do you really think that there's recent technology that doesn't have some patent applying to it? There are likely patents on parts of your DNA, ffs.
