  • PS3 and BlueRay

Well, recently been to a few video stores, and some of the big name electronics stores in the area, stuff like Fry's, Best Buy, etc, and I noticed something.

Either they don't have any BlueRay stuff, or their selection of BlueRay stuff is so small it makes their PSP game section that holds roughly 20-30 games look huge.

Now I remember the PS3 being toted as expensive for a gaming console, but cheap when you factor in the BlueRay player. The PS3 has been out what, roughly 1/2-1year now right?

It seems to me that when the DVD players and the PS2 came out, within half a year to a year video stores and all the electronic stores had shifted at LEAST 50% of their inventory from video tapes to DVD disks.

Now I could be wrong, we all know how faulty my memory is, (and if you even had a hint of how my mind works you'd be scared.....)

But my question for the people who have a PS3 is, how is the BlueRay selection? I haven't really gone hunting to find stuff but it seems to me that it's pretty small, especially in comparison to when the DVD/PS2 stuff came out. How do you feel about your gaming system now?

I am asking because later down the line I may be picking up one of these next gen consoles, and I'm a bit curious as to how people view the PS3 by this time.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

If that doesn't come up, a search for Blue Ray at Best Buys site returns about 450 results. HD-DVD returns a little under 400.

DVD's were big in the US and Europe because Laser Disk never really caught on so going from VHS to DVD was huge and everybody wanted it. This meant that there were a lot more DVD titles when the PS2 came along in 2000.

On top of that, there are currently 3 formats to release movies in, DVD that everyone has and HD-DVD or Blue Ray which are currently fighting for top spot. There won't be a lot of either until one starts clearly winning over the other HD format and over DVD with a decent number of players in peoples homes.

        Re: PS3 and BlueRay

Another thing affecting the selection or blu-ray things might be that not everyone has a high definition TV in their house. DVD probably caught on faster because everyone could use it as long as they had a TV.

thing about this format war is, by the time the dust settles and there's a clear winner, most people will either not give a shit and still be using DVDs, or be moving on to digital distribution.

            Wait, you're serious?

Feba, you live in the country in the western world that has the worst broadband penetration. Digital distribution of movies as a main method of receiving them among the law abiding is not happening anytime soon.

Doesn't seem to have helped them much. Evan Almighty released on HD DVD last week as a new release, opposed by Surf's Up and 28 Weeks Later and some catalog titles on Blu-ray, and the Nielsen/VideoScan results that just got published today showed Blu-ray winning last week's sales handily, 71:29.

This week, however, is a different ball of wax altogether. Transformers released on HD DVD this week, so we may see the first time this entire year where HD DVD might get a lead in the sales figures, however temporary.

Mhurron, you don't give a shit about showing people up. People that do aren't living out in bumsfuckville waiting for decent internet. They're living in the suburbs and signing up for the best internet they can find.

Hell, my Schwan's guy was talking about signing up for fiber service today.

People that live out in the middle of nowhere don't typically have nice home theater setups.

You're in the country where 10MB broadband is considered blazing fast, sorry buddy but people in Europe have 10x the speed available. When you want to watch a movie NOW with the family or whatever, you're not going to be happy torrenting it down for a few hours first.

Oh and someone who's hardly older then a child critiquing others stuff, thats just funny. You're parents setup doesn't count as your own. And people out where they don't get fast enough broad band (hint: 3-5MB still isn't fast enough) buy DVD's. Thats a hell of a lot of people buying DVD's. You really think thats going to be given up before fast enough connections are available in most of, at least, the US.

1- Yes, the US has slow internet. We get it. Why, only a few years ago, I was using DSL! and before that, Dial Up! THE HORROR!

2- I'm not critiquing your stuff. I'm saying that you're out in the middle of nowhere. People that want to show off and/or have the best of the best (Almost everyone who buys HD) do not live out in the middle of nowhere. I've lived on both extremes of what I'm talking about here.

3- Ding, ding, ding, DVDs. Mhurron, I believe you might have subconsciously got my point.

                        Re: PS3 and BlueRay

DVDs are still cheaper, and most people have at least 1-2 players in their home in one form or another (DVD Player, PS2, Xbox etc...)

The HDTV thing is true for the moment, but HDTV will become the new standard by 2009 (last I checked that was the set date) and so I'd expect to see some hefty price drops as newer and better models come out in the next year or so.

I still find it odd that Toshiba is backing HD-DVD yet they helped make the Cell... and now own it >_>

I decided to count the DVD players in my house. For fun.

                          DVD/VCR: 2
                          Portable DVD: 2
                          Laptop: 1
                          Computer: 3
                          Xbox: 1
                          PS2: 1
                          360: 1

not counting the many DVD players I have that aaren't hooked up to anything, that's 11. Goddamn I have too many fuckign DVD players.

One telling point of the advent of HDTV is that Best Buy just announced that they are no longer selling any analog TVs:

                            http://www.reuters.com/article/consu...35317420071018

ATLANTA, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Retailer Best Buy Co (BBY.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Wednesday it has pulled all analog television products from its stores ahead of a planned 2009 U.S. switch to digital television.

The consumer electronics retailer said its stores were instructed to stop selling analog products on Oct. 1 and it will now sell only digital video tuners.

The move is designed to help boost awareness of the switch to digital signals by U.S. broadcasters that is due to take effect by Feb. 17, 2009. At that point, many older TVs using analog signals will not work.

"The majority of people don't know about (the switch)," Mike Vitelli, Best Buy senior vice president of electronics, said in an interview.

While consumers who have cable or satellite service will not notice a big change, those who still use rabbit-ear or rooftop antennas to get television will not be able to watch TV after the transition, unless they get a converter box, subscribe to cable or satellite, or get a digital TV.

Vitelli estimated that 25 million to 30 million households with analog TVs would be affected by the change.

Best Buy said it was the first electronics retailer to publicly announce an exit from analog sets. "The analog TV portion of our assortment has been dwindling each year," Vitelli said.

DVD's were cheap to make, allmost everyone had a tv that could use a DVD for better quality that didn;t fade.

Blue ray movies add VERY little to what we allready have. Not evereyone can get much if anything from hd quality. I don't even notice a quality drop on my 42" from something thats HD or just normal DVD.

HD DVD and BR are both in my eyes totally useless. The price does not pay off the crappy improvements in quality unless you have a screen the size of a wall! Which most people don;t have.

If people did have insanely large screens everywhere, one or the other would be doing a lot better.
