Re: Paramount and Dreamworks go HD-DVD Exclusive, Uselessly Extend Format War

everything that's in the PS3 would be well worth $900
Quite possible true, as a gadget or computer.

PS3 would be well worth $900 for the console.
    Not at all true.

What I'm saying is "If people complains about the price even though they want the PS3 then they just don't have the money".
    Which is, again, false.

I've already said all I need to to explain it, if you cannot comprehend why people would not buy something even if they have more than enough money to afford it I feel sorry for you, but there's nothing I can do about it.

Whether it's worth spending the money on is up to the individual consumer.

That said, you can not argue that the PS3 is a steal for the technology inside it.

Say what you will, but I'm glad Sony's pushing the technological envelope.

Yes, you absolutely can, considering you cannot actually take advantage of that technology, at least not yet.

It's not our fault developers haven't totally figured out how to program for six cores (which, by the way, is such an insane pain in the ass on top of already working with Floating Point Calculations vs more traditional methods)

            The PS3 is IMO Bull-shit Stark Technology (as in Tony Stark). Glorious, but insanely complex and expensive ><;

Malacite: Of course it isn't your fault. It's sony's fault.

Although really, with Intel working on getting 80 core processors out soon enough, Cell is going to look pathetic by the time anyone gets it working well.

Video game architectures should be built so that good games can be made. Not so that they can brag about them.

                ?????????????????????????????

That last statement seems totally uncalled for. Just like with the PS2, it's taking developers a while to get the hang of it (Emotion Engine wasn't easy to work with either) and it'll take a while (Insomniac at least is trying to share info and get other developers to master the damn thing as PaiPai reported) but I'd say in another year or so we'll start to see what the system can really do.

And 80 cores? I seriously doubt this. They've only just now released 4, which by the way, is already quite excessive for the majority of PC owners. Unless you're running like 20 applications at once, or doing a crapload of media creation/editing you really don't need 4 processors.

I'm going over to their website now to see this for myself 'cause I'm not buying it at all (unless we're talking about a cluster of CELL chips here... that could work.)

The new Mac Pro's have quad core intel processors running at 3.2GHZ each cell for people who need the power for rendering like film editors, design packages etc. And a twin quad core (8 cores) for £2k is not bad! (and thats with a high end graphics card) see here

With the PS3 its not just the cores its the whole architecture and GPU that makes it powerfull.

Malacite: Yep. And PS2 wasn't six hundred freaking dollars. PS2 definitely had a lot of untapped potential (even now the games keep pushing it farther and farther), but it wasn't an excuse for a downright silly price.

                    As for 80 core, http://www.google.com/search?q=intel...ient=firefox-a

                    Enjoy.

Feba, for everything you get with ps3 it is dam cheap.

if you want to equip the xbox 360 elite to a 80 gig ps3.

It will cost you 850.00 to equip the xbox like ps3.

                      For EX

                      wireless controller 100.00
                      Charge kit- 21.00
                      Online play 50.00 per year
HD Drive 160.00 ( even though its dead)

i would rather take ps3 with its low record of failure then a xbox 360 that is rated 2/3rds defective ( from Gamestop Dm and Corp)

By the way i am a Manager at GameStop so i think i would know

Correct Feba, the PS2 wasn't 600 dollars. But I saw a calculation based on inflation which said it would have sold for something like 450 or 500 today. I'll have to find it, I think it was in my old roomate's Game Informer magazine that was left at the house.

                          Thoris: Bullshit.

You can't compare the value of something to another thing which is overpriced. And regardless, comparing things the 360 doesn't need to something the PS3 does is just plain retarded. Why would someone buy multiple 360 controllers at all? It's not a party system. Why would you count more controllers for 360 than the PS3 includes? Why would someone who buys a 360 give a shit about HD-DVD? It's not required to play games.

And completely ignoring all that, I never compared the PS3 to the 360, and I never said the 360 was at a good price.
                          ------------------------------------------
Caspian: Even if that was close to correct (Items increasing 150% in five years seems more than a bit sketchy), that's not counting the fact that technology is getting constantly cheaper, even with inflation. For the same price I spent on my computer four or five years ago, I could get a computer that would, compared to most things on the market, be significantly better than my computer. The same applies to many other things. If anything, the PS3 should be cheaper than the PS2, not more expensive.

True, but common sense and logic never applied to consoles. The 360 costs significantly more than than the original and wasn't the giant leap forward in technology that ps2 >> 3 was.

Kinda side question because I can't remember: Didnt ps2 originally cost like $300? Also its atleast 7, maybe 8 years old here in the states.

With the tax at least here in Canada, PS3 was well over 500 when it came out.

And some people actually like to play together still Feba. Granted fewer and fewer 360 games allow this, but my friends and I still gather now and then to play Halo 3 online in the same place. Oh yeah, and 120GB HD for the 360 here is $220 + tax.

So yeah, you get a hell of a lot in one package with the PS3 compared to the 360. And unless Microsoft goes all out with some crazy BS technology (which I doubt, the company is slowly dying. If you can't see it you have to be blind. Meanwhile Sony keeps pushing the envelope on technology) it's just going to be another system either as powerful or marginally stronger than the PS3.

And what's that going to cost people? Let's not forget that Sony doesn't just dump their old consoles either like Microsoft did with the original XBOX.

                              Speaking as someone who owns and enjoys all 3 consoles, Sony is the most expensive for sure but you also get what you pay for. The only thing that still boggles my mind is why they don't include the HDMI cables or at the very least component ><;

Malacite: Yes, and not on 360. I think Xbox has a grand total of three or four games that are meant to be played with your friends in the room. Heck, doesn't Halo 3 only have online coop? The 360 is clearly not a platform for playing with multiple people. And how many people that play the 360 at a friend's house don't have their own controller at home? I'm not defending the 360 here, I've got no interest in owning any Microsoft product without an extremely good reason, but the PS3 doesn't offer that much more than the 360 when you look at what most people are actually going to use.

And Caspian, I'm talking about the time the PS2 had it's original price until PS3's price was announced. PS2 has aged at least a year and a half or so since we got smacked with the $600 tag you have to remember.
