Re: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows discussion thread (MAJOR SPOILERS, DUH)

uh, death isn't a reason to rate something R, it's high levels of violence.

and really, I feel that Rowling treated the deaths rather well, some of it was dark and depressing, but there wasn't anything truly horrible about them. If anything, as I said above, I think it could help some kids with death- see that just because someone is dead doesn't mean you should feel sorry for them, and you shouldn't constantly live in fear of dying either.

Well, the "Nineteen Years Later" epilogue takes place when Harry and crew are around the 36 year mark, so that still leaves a good chunk of time if a second series were to come out (not saying they would). Did Harry really follow up on his O.W.L. and take up the profession of Auror, or did he choose a different route? And what about Draco? He seemed to at least have a bit more of a cordial relationship with Harry and the others, but then that could just be due to the events in the 7th book, rather than anything that happened afterwards.

All in all, a good way to end the series. Just about ended the way I expected it to, as well. The main thing that I suspected, and wanted to find out for certain, was the fact that Dumbledore and Snape had planned the whole thing all along, allowing Snape to end up on the winning team after all, and pretty much leave all of Voldemort's plans in ruins before he even got the chance to start them (essentially just completely wasting his time before he died).

The relationships pretty much happened the way they were hinted at too. Harry and Ginny, Ron and Hermione, but then again, it was beginning to get obvious around book 5 or so.

I think that was one of the lessons that Rowling was trying to teach kids in this last book. Death in itself, and of the series, is not a thing that should be feared, but should be welcomed when it comes, since regardless of how hard anyone tries (even Voldemort) it will always find us all.

I suppose I understood this point substantially, since I must admit I have a significant personal fear of death and whatever may come after.

Yeah, that whole thing never really bothered me so much as Sirius's death, I would've liked if they went back to the Department of Mysteries, but they never had time for that, and I'm perfectly content with the basic "They're dead. Move on." vibe Rowling gave it.

Although I kinda dislike how annoying she made Ron and Hermione at a couple points, mainly when Ron kept going "What if Dumbledore IS alive?!" and Hermione kept going "The Hallows can't possibly exist!" bullshit.

that last bit got anyoing saying the hallows were fake, but yet it was part of dumbledores plan for her to stop haryr from thinking of the hallows page 720 last paragraph.

I myself was pleased with the book though i really thought he was going to comand death to take down voldemort (it seemed what it lead to way before he saw snap die) i mean im cause the people i wanted to live, lived and hooked up and had kids. though i was really sad that she didn't make it a longer ending (like events right after voldemorts death) things like the day of harrys and ginnys marriage instead of the parting of his kids to hogwarts. though i am super happy that everyone watched while voldemort and harry did that 1v1 duel. tight :D

Am I the only one that kept thinking of a bunch of Black Mages in a Ballista during the siege of Hogwarts? And for some reason, the Besieged music played a couple of times in my head...

I didn't think of FFXI once when reading the book. I tend to keep my fantasies pretty separate tho.

I did kinda like how JKR managed to make being on the lam the majority of the book, and barely spent any time in Hogwarts this round (but didn't she say that that would be the case anyways?).

"...and the ground around them cracked and heated due to the ferocity of their duel..." or something to that effect when describing Mrs. Weasly vs. Bellatrix. DBZ has forever tainted my perception of any scene described as such in any book/movie/game/whatever.

<Bellatrix> I will destroy you and all the rest of your Weasly kind.
                      Bellatrix powers up.
<Mrs. Weasly> NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!!!
Mrs. Weasly prepares Super Saiyan Mode.
                      Mrs. Weasly goes Super Saiyan.
Mrs. Weasly's power is over NINE THOUSAAAND!!!
                      <Bellatrix> Oh snap! O.O'

                      Yeah.

I mix and match. I find it more fun that way.

Tbh, I was just thinking "How are they going to make a video game out of *this* one?!"

And then I remembered chasing down Peeves on my PS1. And I cried.

What I wanna know how they are possibly gonna pare down the book into a halfway decent movie. I don't think they can. I don't really want them to try.

Really. There's enough content in the last book (and probably everything since Prisoner tbh) to make a trilogy out of the thing.

I mean, I got the thing first thing in the morning, read all day (sparing lunch and dinner), went to sleep, woke up and read until afternoon *again* before I finished the thing. That's a lot of reading, I don't care who you are.

I've actually never played any of the HP games; I've never been much of a fan of games based on liscenses from books/movies and whatnot. If anything, though, they could set it up much like any of the LOTR games, at least the mass combat parts, for the siege. Before that, tho, it's gonna be pretty boring a game of hide and seek from the Death Eaters (expect LOTS of cutscenes during this time frame lol).

It'll also be rather anti climactic since Neville will be the one to pull the ol slice and dice on Nagini, and all Harry will be doing is hiding/playing dead that whole time. Not the most exciting of game play devices, not in this context at least.

I was glad that Harry finally straight up beat Voldemort. Though it wasn't through superior force, he outsmarted him. Something they really harped on from the beginning of the series. Harry really came into his own in this one, I think this was probably a big reason why she killed Dumbledore in 6, he had to start doing things on his own and he did well. I think it shows how much Dumbledore had declined by book 5. He had the Elder Wand and still couldn't do any better than a draw against Voldemort.
Also have to say I got a little choked up when he was talking to his parents there near the end.

As for setting up Ron and Hermione and Harry and Ginny...Figured Ron and Hermione in book 1, incredibly obvious by book 4. Harry and Ginny in book 2, inredibly obvious by 5.

As for another series of books, I'd like to see what happens immediately following the death of Voldemort. Does he take the tests? Does he become an auror? I just hope if it happens, that she's the one who writes them. Please don't open up the rights, like they did with Star Wars. The first few books were good, then everyone and their uncle payed the licensing fees and the whole SW universe just went to shit.
