Its not just American bands, Placebo is a large one that comes to mind. I think those are things that are expressed world wide.
~I agree with you to a point though. I am against music that glorifies drugs and violence, but as they are part of life, if a song so happens to be about the emotions generated by such things, the actions during, thoughts generated, etc..., then I won't shy away from it. This theme or "expression" is not confined to music, it has also been the content of poetry, prose, and literature for a very long time.
(I like music that can honestly make light of death, or make it into a thing of beauty. Even the open display of pain and melancholy can be a beautiful thing if expressed in a way you are inclined to.)

A band that I enjoy that has lots of booze, death and suicide would be Alkaline Trio. You might check them out some time. I also recommend Placebo if you haven't heard them before.

      Re: Rock

You know, I used to be really against emo, and I still am in the superficial sense (the kids that run around in makeup *shakes fist*, cutting hate into their wrists, and all that nonsense). However, I enjoy Bright Eyes, and that's about as emo as it can get. I don't know what else really constitutes "emo". Its sad, emotional, whiney, but then again what genre of music hasn't had a plethora of songs dedicated to such a theme? Its getting too hard to confine groups into strict categories, so I gave up.

      Is Depeche Mode emo? ^_~

Ok, way off topic, sorry, but its been mentioned here several times so I'll ask.
Wasn't whats "emo" now the same thing that was goth like 10 years ago?

On-topic, as for the foo. Their double disc that came out a couple years ago is absolutely incredible. Very few albums that can compare to that one. Razor remains one of my favorite songs to this day.

Yes and no. This is where it gets hard to distinguish things. The arguments I've heard is that goth is darker, typically a little more brutal, less whiney and more mature sounding. Typically I would agree, but goth these days isn't too far off from sorts of death metal, emo and punk. Jack Off Jill for example borders on punk. Its all just a hodgpodge.

The clothing is a huge difference too. I mean... the super super tight pants guys wear, and still sag them a little bit. It looks like they shit in their pants.

Another thing is their hair. I mean... why are you going to completely cover one eye, and barely cover the other eye so you can still see through? :-\

Because it looks cool, of course. I grew my hair out once for locks of love, and aside from long curly hair being a PITA, just having your bangs fall in front of your eyes to the point where they're down to your nose doesn't make it hard enough to look where you need to cut half of them off to see out. Hell, it was actually a good substitute for carrying around sunglasses.

I believe that if you're singing about it, you're still glorifying it to an extent. If you're not singing about drugs, but rather their effects on your life whether bad or good you're still hoisting it up there.

The reason I like Bomb Factory so much is because of their upbeat style, and Taoist undertones. Most of their music is energetic, and even their slower music has that up-lifting 'never give up' feeling to it. Their subject matter ranges from life, society, women, drinking, discontempt, and every once in a while something else. Jun-ya's vocals are pretty crazy as well.

Anybody listen to M.O.V.E? With Kimura producing their music a lot of it has had that rock element lately. It's not 100% rock, but it sounds good to me.

Bomb Factory isn't as publicized as your typical American rock bands. They play regularly in clubs around Japan.

M.O.V.E is broad in their style. I'm sure everybody has heard something they've done at some point or another.

I'm generally not a fan of music where I can't understand the lyrics. With a few notable exceptions.

With the exception of the Pizzicato Five, I really don't care for most Japanese rock or pop that I've heard.

I think that genre of music (Where you can't understand what the singer is singing; e.i. Death Metal, Screamo, or a Foreign group) is like beer. You develope a taste for it, I don't think you can just like it right off the bat.

I usually listen to music on how I feel at the moment.

If I want to get pumped up... I'll pop on some Justin Timberlake.

LAWL YEAH RIGHT. I'd listen to Inked in Blood.

If I wanted to just chill out in a car ride, I'd listen to Skillet or Billy Talent.

If I was partying, maybe Death Metal or some rap.

It's all situational for me. I don't just stick to one genre.
In the moonlight, your face it glows.. like a thousand diamonds, I suppose.
And your hair flows like.. The ocean breeze...
Not a million fights could make me hate you, you’re invincible.
                              Yeah, It’s true.
It’s in your eyes, where I find peace.

What I meant was music where the song is in a language I don't understand. But yeah, I'm also not a fan of music where the singer screams. If I wanted to hear screams I would try and have a conversation with my family.

I like a lot of music. I'm sure there is a lot of stuff out there I haven't heard that I might like someday, and a lot of stuff out there that I'll probably never like.
