Its not just American bands, Placebo is a large one that comes to mind. I think those are things that are expressed world wide.
~I agree with you to a point though. I am against music that glorifies drugs and violence, but as they are part of life, if a song so happens to be about the emotions generated by such things, the actions during, thoughts generated, etc..., then I won't shy away from it. This theme or "expression" is not confined to music, it has also been the content of poetry, prose, and literature for a very long time.
(I like music that can honestly make light of death, or make it into a thing of beauty. Even the open display of pain and melancholy can be a beautiful thing if expressed in a way you are inclined to.)
A band that I enjoy that has lots of booze, death and suicide would be Alkaline Trio. You might check them out some time. I also recommend Placebo if you haven't heard them before.
