  • Hip-Hop

The topic is basically for people to post and discuss their favourite hip-hop artists/rappers. If I see any Eminem in here I'll have a fit. Have fun!

    1. Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks)
    2. Jurassic 5
    3. Lupe Fiasco
    4. Outerspace
    5. Dizzee Rascal

    Re: Hip-Hop

Wow, no idea how I missed this thread. Unfortunately, the DiV community isn't exactly friendly to Hip Hop, there's been several threads where people outright bash it for no good reason at all <.<

For that reason I doubt this thread will get many responses, but I'll go ahead and contribute.

As far as MCs go, here is my Top 5:
    1. Rakim
    2. Krs-One
    3. Nas
    4. Tupac
    5. GZA/Genius
    6. Immortal Technique

Okay, I slid a 6th in there, but I think Technique deserves to be up there with all the legends. I'm liking your list btw. What I've heard of Lupe is great...from his verse on "Touch the Sky" with Kanye and his two singles. JMT is awesome, I downloaded Violent by Design and Legacy of Blood on iTunes. Never heard of #4 or 5 though.

Dizzee Rascal is a British dude that has a kinda raspy voice. What were they calling his sound at first? Grime or Grimy or something like that.

Your list was on point until you got to number five. How can you not put Nas over Jay Z or Little Wayne for pete's sake? Their lyrics can't phase the God's Son.

I usually try to ignore your idiocy Feba, but for the sake of this topic, I'll bite. What do you know about Hip Hop that gives you a legitimate reason to say it sucks? Despite the fact that you're biased?

                Re: Hip-Hop

Hip hop just isn't a genre that appeals to me. That's not to say that I don't like a few songs here and there, but the same could be said for a lot of other genres as well.

That said, I have no interest in bashing it. People like what they like. If they don't like what I like, that's life.

Grime. It's a British style that's like an amalgamation of existing styles, built up from the garage scene out there, where MC'ing became a bigger part of the music over time. There was another MC from the UK that crossed over from that scene I think, can't think of the name; may have been one of the Roll Deep MCs, or someone tied to Dizzee Rascal. Kind of crazy seeing the 2-step garage scene create someone like Craig David, and the style evolve in to grime and dubstep (this is sort of like deeper, more technical and MC-free on the tracks generally, but dubstep parties will often have an MC to hype the crowd).

Anyways, I mainly like older hip hop: Souls of Mischief, De la Soul, Common Sense (now just Common), A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Jurrassic Five. I don't really know too much new stuff.

I wish more people took a stance like this. The reason there's never a Rap thread is because people like Feba can't keep their opinions to themselves and end up starting an argument until the thread gets locked.

This isn't aimed at you in anyway, but your list, well, stinks.

50 Cent, G-Unit, etc. are a disgrace to the entire genre. They're part of this whole commerialized mess today where record companies put together some wack beat with weak lyrics where the artist spends three minutes boasting about his cars, money, hoes; then puts it on MTV under the "Hip Hop" label.

and if you'll notice, I'm not starting an argument, just stating my opinion on why people bash it.

If you want to have an argument here, and you want me to be involved, make it an argument on why people have to start arguments, I have no interest in debating my views on this.

i only listen to rap if I'm partying or something, but not for sport. it's just like death metal, sreamo, punk, country, jazz... they all have times when they're good. If I wanted to sit in my room and blast music, hell I'd choose Inked In Blood over 50 cent, but if I was at a club I couldn't see myself dancing to Nickelback or Frank Sinatra. But I see nothing wrong with rap, I mean, it's kinda cool, it's the more fun upbeat music. So, to conribute to this thread:

                        1. Gym Class Heroes
                        2. Shop Boyz (PARTY LIKE A ROCKSTAR )
                        3. Flo-riday

                        that's about it
In the moonlight, your face it glows.. like a thousand diamonds, I suppose.
And your hair flows like.. The ocean breeze...
Not a million fights could make me hate you, you’re invincible.
                        Yeah, It’s true.
It’s in your eyes, where I find peace.

Step on some toes already, don't be a girl. Also: country? Really?

Not flaming or anything, but I think it's the subject matter that people object to the most. Personally I dislike the lyrics, most of the actual music itself, and the fact that when they're not outright 'sampling' other people's work they're trying to branch out into other styles while claiming the world owes rap a debt of gratitude.

I've heard nice material from some of the older members in my community, but the young ones are all about shock value. Violence, drugs, sex, money, women, violence towards women, etc. Way to pervert our future.

Nah man I feel their music and if you don't like them or don't respect what I do then don't diss on my opinions. Anyway, cassidy is by far one of the greatest lyrical rappers but man I haven't heard guy in a minute. Hasn't released shit in a bit. Anyway keep that shit to yourself.

What you posted was flame bait, you weren't adding anything constructive at all. You just said "Except it for sucking, please continue" Smart ass remarks like that start fights.

I agree, for some reason that's the kind of Hip Hop normal people are seeing and hearing. No one taks the time to notice that the music didn't start off this way, and there are many great artists who are pointed in a more positive, less idiotic direction. But, if you really wanna make the big bucks today, you have to talk about the stupid stuff, truth be told.

Er, my post wasn't about dissing your opinion, which is why I added my little disclaimer. This is a thread for us to discuss Hip Hop and I was doing just that.

Also, Cassidy being a great lyricist is a joke.
