Well, I really like the looks of it. Sure it is something typical like the Mortal Kombat movies, but I think it looked really good. I want to go see it.
Edit: oh, not in the cinema though, this seems more like a movie to rent and watch at home.
Anyhow, I love Dead or Alive, I got DoA 2, 3 and DoA Xtreme 2, which I found very dissappointing. I find the fighting games awesome, I play them with my friends often. We used to play Tekken too, but DoA drives us more because of the fighting speed.
The problem with making a movie based on a fighting game is that fighting games generally have no story. Mortal Kombat, however, had its own mythos designed around it, something a little more complex than "M. Bison is evil, we must stop him" at least. Ryu and the Street Fighter crew are endearing for the gameplay and design, Lu Kang and MK's characters for the violence and the various factions amoungst humanity and Outworld.
Staying true to a mythos is something that's important to me if you're going to make a movie. You don't have to be true to the story per se, just know why that world is important to players and how to communicate it.
This is why I see Pokemon or Mortal Kombat is good movies (MK2 movie sucked because it went somwhere else). I wouldn't say Pokemon was a great cinematie achievement or anything, but for what the world is and how it pertains to the video games, its faithful.
Advent Children couldn't get more faithful, the movie was made by the people behind the game. AC's problem is if you're not hip to Final Fantasy or FFVII specifically, the rest of the movie is over your head. But there's still the over-the-top action to appreciate.
DoA has no plot. Let's not pretend it does. Big Boobs and button mashing are where DOA starts and ends. Worse, this movie doesn't have the large breasts. Even Tomb Raider got the casting right, it was just poorly directed.
Only thing you could do to make DOA worse is have Uwe Boll direct it.
He's already working on Bloodrayne II, Alone in the Dark II and Dungeon Siege... the bastard.
