    Re: High Def format war

Yeah, the night I went to get mine, they were out. But they had a 61" open box for the same price as the 56". Take it home, put the stand together, doesn't work. Took it back and was gonna have to bay the extra 250. And then it took forever for them to find it, had them get me the new 56" instead since it looks better in the living room anyway. 61" was just too big.

      Re: High Def format war

hehe yeah, I was debating whether to get the 56'' because it was only $1450 open box. But instead of a living room, this thing was going in my bedroom. So, I decided to go with the 50''. It was $1299 and I managed to get them to drop it down to $1229.

That's the problem with open box buying, but I had them set it up so I could check it out properly before buying it. Either way, congrats on our new DLP sets.

I have a 50" Sony SXRD TV that I just bought after Thanksgiving and it blows me away. Full 1080p, more features than I can shake a stick at. Plays everything off my PS3 flawlessly, including 1080p Blu-ray movies.

        P.S. to Omgwtfbbqkitten:

This is why those with 1080 resolution TVs should upgrade. Behind the visual splendor that is Open Season on Blu-ray, courtesy of PioManiac at AVSForum:

Click to expand and see just how amazing the picture quality really is. I own this title, and the visual quality is nothing short of phenomenal (looks even sharper than this pic, which is lower resolution than it is on-screen since it was taken with a digital camera against a 720p screen. It looks even MORE amazing at 1080p.).

I wasn't a big fan of the film itself, but I'm dying to pick up Open Season just because of how visually amazing it is.

It's definitely a precursor to how great CGI animation will be on Blu-ray. Just think of Advent Children Complete or Cars, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and other Pixar films.

How much was your SXRD, Icemage? I had found one really cheap at CircuitCity.com (came to like $1700) but the deal I found on my DLP took precedence in the end.

            Re: High Def format war

I bought my SXRD on Black Friday at Best Buy for $1899. The picture quality on it is just stunning. You can get one now for around $1800 at most major retailers I think.

And yes, Open Season isn't a great film, but it is by far the cleanest transfer I've ever seen of any movie on any format, bar none. There are just SO many jaw-droppingly beautiful moments in the movie.

P.S. The Prestige on Blu-ray goes on sale today!! This is getting rave reviews for both audio and picture quality, and I hear the film is fantastic, too! Review [LINK]. Going to drop by BB this evening and see if I can snag it!

G'ah, yes. I NEED to pick up the Prestige. I grabbed The Departed last week and that was a great buy, so I'll definitely need to add this one to my collection.

                    Re: High Def format war

Just bought The Departed last weekend and watched it tonight. So far, best conversion I've seen so far. Picture is just as crisp and clear as can be. And Prestige is also on the list of things to buy, probably this weekend when I have time to get it and watch it. Black Hawk Down looks really good too, but the bleaching makes it less noticable.
Btw, the departed, really good. Should have seen the ending coming sooner than the last 30 minutes, though. Martin never was one for the cookie cutter endings.

We watched that the other night, and I do have to say I did not see that coming at all...right after "the scene" (and I'm sure you know what scene I'm talking about, don't want to give it away to those that haven't seen it) we paused the movie for a second and we were like "Whoa...."

                      Great flick ^^

Gah, and I'm still struggling to find a good 1080p set here were I live.

Might as well import but that'll take 2 weeks to get here.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good $1500-1900 price range 1080p HDTV or monitor ? (No more than 2k because of import taxes and stuff.)

I almost never watch TV so it'll be used as PC monitor + PS3/BD display 95% of the time.

                          Re: High Def format war

Personally I'll recommend anything Sony or Samsung. They're the top two in my opinion. Try looking for a Bravia if you can afford it (you might have to reach into the low $2,000s for some of the better models), but if you look around long enough and try to find your best deals, you can get some great flat panels or DLPs for $1900 or under.

I think Amazon has the DLP I bought for $1499 or something. It's a fantastic set, but DLPs aren't flat-panel if that's what you're looking for particularly.

Best buy search for 1080p. I'll edit in a sec with a few suggestions.

                            http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1164156736657
Its the one I really wanted, but was unwilling to shell out for it. Over your stated price range, but I just want a quick link to drool over.
                            http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1152227795761
Also over your stated price range, but not near as much so.
                            http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1142298457279
Probably my first suggestion for LCD's under 2k, only barely under though.
                            http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1140394358954
A toshiba, but toshiba's aren't terrible (even though they are behind HD-DVD).

I only posted lcd's, and then only two that are under 2k. The link at the top though will take you to all tv's that are 1080p. From there, you can look and see if there's one you'd like more.
Like Pai said, I'd definately suggest Sony and Samsung over the others. I've also heard the Sharp AQUOS tv's are pretty good too, but have no experience with one myself.

If you want to wait, Sharp is releasing budget 1080p sets made specifically for gamers. They boast much higher response times than most other LCD HDTVs. I think they come in 37'' and 46'', and they might be sub-$2000, at least I know the smaller one is. They were at CES and should be out in the spring.

                                Bravia HDTVs look really nice.

I liked the 40" Samsung the most, and that's kinda what I had in mind. There are three reasons I don't wanna spend more than 2k although I could go well over 3k without having problems.

One, I wanna wait a few years before really spending on a 1080p HDTV, pretty much wait till they get even better and cheaper even if I end up spending twice as much while getting something really awesome.

Two, import taxes suck, I could end up paying up to 50% more depending on how this country of mine rates the display I'm gonna buy, that could hurt a lot if I go over 2.5k + taxes.

And three, I wanna spend some money in all the PS2/PS3 games I wanna play (and some BD movies ).

I'm gonna try finding that Samsung model here and see if I can avoid the import, but I doubt it.

                                Thanks for the help.
