Well, he has to appeal to a mass audience, not just those who grew up on the franchise.
People relate to people, so having the main characters be humans who meet these incredible transformers puts the audience member in the role of the main characters. Evoking how they would feel, react and respond to such circumstance.

then dont call it transformers.
you know if he named this movie like 'robot invaders' and removed all autobot/decepticon logos, no one would known its supposed to be based of transformers.
i learned long time ago that, once hollywood places 'based off of...' in their trailer/intro it just pretty means it allows them to chop, hack, butcher, distort anything of value into whatever any lame director thinks is hip.
you can appeal to the mass audience w/o destroying a classic. there's plenty of movies out there that stay true to their original incarnations. 1 very very commercially successful and very accurate to the the book it came from would be LOTR. there are many others that do the same. i dont see why he couldnt have done a bit more with this one. oh wait, he's michael bay.
you take -real- directors that try to keep the feel and authenticity of a movie or book and they probably would have kept this movie more close to its orginal roots. i wouldnt be surprised if michael bay hasnt watched any transformers episodes at all.

The official site has a trailer with an extra voice over by Optimus Prime himself, Peter Cullen, saying his classic line.

Definately looks like a good flick, and my understanding is that there are talks of a trilogy if it's successful. Hasbro, Bay and Co have been working hard to make this a more 'mature and adult' film to try and shake the stigmata of this being nothing more then a children's franchise and over extended toy commercial. That seems to be the driving force behind most of this film's direction as Hasbro has said that they want to move from being 'just a toy company' to a company that owns intellectual property that also makes toys.

This is all very early too, I mean would you do a trailer with all the awesome looking Transformers right off the bat? No, you don't because you want Wow factor when the movie is released.
You hide as much as you can only giving breif glimpses and teases.

Well the movie still isn't finished from my understanding, this is just the teaser trailer. They still haven't finalized all the VAs or bot-to-bot parts of the script or finished all the CG work. Though there have been rumblings that Frank Welker, the original voice of Megatron will be coming back for this film. All the 'money shots' and big scenes were intentionally left out to not give away too much. Same reason they didn't show any full transformations or real, full body, upclose bot shots. Only one that came even close to that was the one at the end coming out of the pool in his proto form.

Also, there were two lil 'fan' easter eggs thrown in the trailer. One was the girl holding a 'My Little Pony' doll, another of Hasbro's products and the second was a web site with a password 'Takara83', which is the japanese company that makes Transformers along with Hasbro. It's said the site is an Alternate Reality Game, whatever the hell that means, but is directly linked to the movie.
