I adore Firefly... Is BSG something I'd likely enjoy based on that?
Yes. BSG is pretty much a more dramatic Firefly, imo. Some might say that it gets preachy, in that some of its plot points mirror current issues (especially in this last season), but it does it in a very compelling and very fair way. For one thing, it never takes sides; no character is all good or all bad, and they always explore both sides of a conflict. It is more likely to leave you asking "What would I do?" rather than telling you what is right. Plus, if you like Firefly, these last few episodes have had Badger in top form.
Also, although I like the miniseries more than I used to, I still think the best way to test the series is with the first season. If the first episode, 33, doesn't get you hooked, there's no hope for you.

I can probably handle a mirroring, so long as it isn't a producer or artist using art as a medium of political commentary. (Political cartoon, ok. My Star Wars book? RWAR!) And presenting you with a situation and then leaving you simply to wonder how you would act is a nice way to go about things of that nature.
I don't know why, but after my recent stint with reading LotF: Bloodlines, I got so pissed at the outright preaching thing that I can no longer stand it. The first book wasn't that way, the second was, the third and fourth were not. It's what happens when you use different authors, I suppose. But my problem was more along the lines that I came out of the book feeling preached at about which side was right or wrong/oppressive, and it really dealt a blow to the suspension of disbelief and immersion into the Star Wars universe.
Plus, as an aspiring author myself, I've always just found it mildly taboo to try and use my influence over the reader to alter their state of mind to my beliefs. Especially while reading, where I can present things with as much bias as I want, and deny them the ability to see things from all sides. It just seems unfair and in general bad taste.
So, if BSG just shows you two sides, but lets you make your own mind, that's infinitely better. I'm all for thought-provocation. Heaven knows my job is mindless enough, I need good provocation. But watching a biased run down of CNN with spaceships (or lightsabers) thrown on top makes me unhappy. I'd be happiest if my fantasy/sci-fi totally alienated itself from anything mirroring the current world (it's often too easy to spot and ruins the feel for me), but I think that's a bit of a tall order.
After I get back from vacation, I'll pick up the mini-series. Got a ton of stuff to buy before I go, and I'm not sure how much I need to spend while there. And if worst comes to worst, at least my b/f will stop pestering me to go watch it, even if I do find it's not quite my thing. But it really sounds like it will be quite enjoyable.

Yay, was gonna dig this thread up last night, glad someone did it for me.
Honestly, Telera, best tv show in television (Heroes is an incredibly close 2nd, though, but only b/c of the style it allows it to make huge advances in the storyline ever ep.) Yeah, it does have events mirror rl happenings, but its been really fair about it and presented both sides well.
My thoughts about the season finale and what I think it means and what might happen later
Ok, first off, this means Hera is nolonger as special. Tyrol's baby is a mix too, can guarantee this will come into play down the road.
I don't think the fact that just b/c they're cylons that now they'll turn bad. I think Tigh and Tyrol will probably struggle some, but stay good and help the humans. Anders and the president's aide I think will end up turning bad though and try to start shit.
Right now my best guess for #5 is Starbuck. But she's gonna stay good through it all. Also think something with her coming back will be what makes Anders go bad and probably give Lee and excuse to kill him (credit for that idea goes to a friend ingame).
Lee will obviously be back in the service, either CAG or Major again.
All in all, I think this kinda makes it seem more that the end of the series will not end in the annihilation of the Cylons. I think several of the models will get shutdown for good, but some will still stay alive and a true peace will be reached b/w the humans and cylons.
All in all, the finale was fracking awesome. About the only way they could ruin this series is if they get to earth and its current day earth (a la original series). Would probably single handedly make it absolutely awful.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. Now I get to wait 9 fracking months for the new season. Way to go scifi channel. (They didn't renew for a new season until last week, btw.)

1. Who is #5? Starbuck seems like too obvious of an answer. The fact that Tigh is a cylon means there have been human cylons for far longer than anyone thought, or that the cylons replaced him with a skinjob at some point, meaning anyone can be a cylon, not just someone who didn't know anyone prior to the start of the miniseries. I still think Baltar is possible, it would explain how he survived a nuclear blast and keeps seeing 6 and now another version of himself.
2. Tory has gone bad, after killing Callie I'd say she's there. Will Tigh, Chief, and Anders go bad as well?
3. When will everyone else find out about the 4? Since they're splitting the season up again, I'm guessing they'll find out some or all at the mid-season point. We may find out who the 5th is in the same episode.
4. If Starbuck isn't a cylon, how did she apparently die, find Earth, then come back in a new ship? I haven't formulated any real theories on this, yet.
5. Will the season end with them finding Earth and giving a conclusion to the war with the cylons or will Sci-Fi do what they've gotten so good at and end it on a cliffhanger only to make a movie or miniseries months later?
Just curious for ya'lls thoughts.

You can't see what it says? Odd, its showing for me.

Just finished the midseason finale.......fk'ing epic. No clue where they're going from here, but I know I can't wait for it. Rumor has it that they're not finishing it until early next year....yay, another 6 months. Atleast there's Stargate Atlantis to pass the time.
Also, heard they're adding two extra hours to the rest of the season and that the writer's strike gave him time to think about the ending and change it some. Next year can't come soon enough.

Yeah, we won't see the latter half of the season until 2009. Boo to that, I say. But oh well.
I was really surprised where they ended it. Pleasantly so. I was sure they were going to drag out their arrival there until the end of the series. But apparently not!

Same, I figured they'd finish with them making several jumps, getting caugt up with the other Cylons in the process (read: more battles and running) and then only finding another waypoint.
Thoughts: Diana said the 5th wasn't in the fleet. Making you think it wasn't someone you'd know, but the people that were on the baseship were not currently "in the fleet". I'm still going with Roselyn or Baltar.

for some reason, i've never really liked live action sci-fi TV
You might not know me, but I know you. I'm a time traveler who travels at a rate of one second per second. I've just come from the past to tell you that Star Trek is pretty damn entertaining.
I'm curious to see how they explain Earth being destroyed. I know it's a mormon myth, and this probably makes sense according to that theology, but I'm still wondering. I briefly joined that denomination because the service on MCRD lasted the entire morning, probably should've read the books they gave me. Orson Scott Card played with this mythology with his "Memory of Earth" series, so maybe it'd be worthwhile to reread those and try to relate back.
Also, they never did show the Cylon homeworld. They "left" to find their own planet, but it never shows them actually on it, and it doesn't seem like it was Earth that they ended up on. I'm curious to see if the models from the Resurrection hub start waking up back home instead. Also, since all the Cylons are based on the memories of one very angry, suicidal teenage girl, I'm curious to see how Tigh and the others reconcile themselves with being the relatively normal ones.
