Simpsons fans were treated to one of the biggest surprises in 17 years this past weekend, with both the opening of Ice Age: The Meltdown (which sucked) and Sunday's episode of The Simpsons.
Seemingly out of nowhere (aside from a spill by Harry Shearer that recording on the film had begun), The Simpsons Movie was officially announced in two different teasers, first run in approximately 7,000 theaters with The Meltdown's premiere.
The most popular teaser, which you can see here, begins with a panning of the Superman logo, with an ominous narrator claiming that in 2007, the greatest American hero ever will make his theatrical debut. The camera zooms out to reveal Homer Simpson wearing the Superman shirt and nothing else but his wonderful tighty-whities, sitting gloriously on his couch, exclaiming "I forgot what I was supposed to say." The teaser concludes by announcing The Simpsons Movie for release on July 27th, 2007.
Longtime fans such as myself are not only floored by the announcement, but should be happy to learn of the film's production team.
According to Mike Scully, best known for his writing of episodes like "Two Dozen and One Greyhounds" and "Behind the Laughter," the scriptwriting of the film took place over a course of two years, and was shrouded in secrecy by the highest ups in the Fox Animation department. Scully claims that the script was written in Aramaic.
Joining Scully in the scriptwriting are series veterans like Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, Al Jean, Ian Maxtone-Graham, George Meyer, David Mirkin, Mike Reiss, Matt Selman, John Swartzwelder and Jon Vitti. David Silverman serves as the film's animation supervisor, with Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, Al Jean, Mike Scully, and Richard Sakai producing. Truly a dream team for diehard Simpsons fans.
All of the TV series' voice cast is recording for the film, with noted guest voices from Albert Brooks, Minnie Driver and Erin Brokovich.
Originally planned over a decade ago and never too late, the Simpsons movie will be opening in theaters on July 27th, 2007. Expect to hear a lot more in the coming months!
