I believe both are Warner, who is making their movies for both HD-DVD and BD. So no worries, you should be seeing Batman Begins in BD soon. (Also saw a SS of the Batman Begins movie, with Christian Bale doing a video commentary where the video of him talking is an overlay on the movie. It looks incredible.)

Eohmer, I'm not positive on pc/laptop drives. I know the regular players are out now, but not sure if BD drives are already debuting. I am pretty sure HD-DVD drives are available, but rather hard to find. Hell, the set top HD-DVD players just started showing up here in Lubbock a few weeks ago, and they've been out for a cpl months.

Ok, did some diggin on Engadget.

      Sony's Blue-Ray equipped Vaio AR

      Toshiba's Qosmio G35-AV650 HD-DVD Notebook
      The Tao of Ren
      FFXIV LowRes Benchmark - 5011

If we don't like something, collectively, if our hatred for it throbs like an abscess beneath every thread, does that mean that they're doing something right?

The Toshiba review was rather funny. Whining about no DVI output? Seriously, get over it. It hasn't been the industry standard for a few years, don't expect a sudden reemergence for high def dvd's. Not to mention converters work just fine and only cost 30 bucks.

          Re: HD-DVD's coming in March!

I'll paraphrase the articles (since my dinner is taking a while to cook )

          Vaio:
          Laptop Magazine Liked:
          -2.0GHz T2500 Core Duo CPU
-nVidia GeForce Go 7600 GT graphics
          -1,920 x 1,200 WUXGA+ Xbrite display
-HDMI out (cable and DVI-adapter included)
          -200GB worth of storage
          -1GB of RAM
          Laptop Magazine Disliked:
          -Burner is 1.0x
(That's right, the Vaio has a BRRW!!!!!!!!)
          -Touchpad and buttons are inconvienient
          -2 hours of battery life ;.;

Toshiba (At time of writing, they compared it to Sony's Desktop model, the RC310G, because that was the only other Blu-Ray playing computer at the time. . .)
          PC Mag Liked:
          -2GHz Core Duo processor
          -NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 GPU
-1920 x 1200 screen resolution (Ren: Not "Xbrite, but that might explain the additional HOUR of battery life >.>)
-HDMI out (though sadly, no DVI)
          -200GB HDD
          -1GB of RAM
          PC Mag Disliked:
-Sony's can actually record and create content
-Sony's included software is even better for watching (better for recording also, but no comparison >.>
-Xbox Fattie heavy at 10.2 pounds >.>

So what do I think? I think they're both leetsauce laptops.

Honestly, they're exactly the same piece of hardware. The only difference is the BDROM BURNER, but does that warrant an addition $500?

I guess if you were in the market for those, go for it. For the fact that drives are upgradeable as is software, I might personally hold out on the Vaio, but the additional $500 is cheaper than what I would pay down the road for upgraded drives and content software.

But then again, I'm impartial, since I love Sony and I'm on a POS dell. $3500 is a lot, regardless, when PS3'll be out for $600, so yeah, nice try, Vaio.

I can get a sexy iBook for the same price >.>

Yeah, they wouldn't have bitched if Sony didn't include it.

          Triple Post Edited:
I just realized that a BD Drive might cost in excess of 700 dollars. So ok, I retract my statement on that part >.>

            Re: HD-DVD's coming in March!

You're also paying 500 dollars more for the vaio. The adapter is just an extra freebie at that point. I know the Vaio can burn BD's, but I'm not aware of any HD video capturing device right now anyway. So, its neat, but rather pointless unless you need 50 gb's of information on one disc, in which case its still cheaper just to buy a regular dvd-rw and just use two.
The anti-piracy software on those is supposed to be pretty great too, so it can't be easy to copy a BD or HD-DVD to your hdd, then burn it onto a new dvd.

Well, they did some readjusting and apparently the problems with 1080i is in the hdmi out itself. So, looks like Samsung dropped the ball on that one, unless its part of the firmware and they can quickly fix it.

Significantly more vibrant color, that really pops off the screen. Go figure.

Let me just say, that I'm more excited to look at Blu-ray Disc material now, that's for sure. After some calibrating, I'm going to dive right into watching some discs. I'm taking back my snap judgement from last night on being less than impressed with Blu-ray, until I've had more time to look at FINALLY decent 1080i video out of this Samsung player. However, I am fully ready to pass judgement on the BD-P1000's HDMI output. Ugh... nicht gut.
