Here's the news story (in case you have been living under a rock). If you've ever played a "copy-protected" CD from Sony BMG on your computer, you might want to check your system.

serious invasion of your computer system. i smell a class-action lawsuit coming.

funny thing is, hackers have already been reported to have started using the rootkit to hide cheats from Blizzard's Warden.

in regard to this matter, Sony BMG has started distributing the "update" file that removes the "cloaking technology component."

however, according to the Mainichi Interactive, a part of MSN News Japan, this update only makes the software visible to users, and we still don't have the ability to uninstall it. the news further says that the manual uninstallation is a difficult task for users, and trying so may result in the CD drive not working. for this reason, an antivirus company is demanding that they (Sony BMG) provide users w/ uninstallation program.

thanks for posting the update tool link. although it doesn't fix the problem, which they still haven't acknowledged.

the question is, will they ever?

not to mention the update site is addressing as if the tool removes everything from our pc, which isn't the case according to the news above. obviously they haven't looked hard enough to "a number of articles published regarding the XCP Technology."

wow... many companies seem to be using this approach. It's the trend these days eh?
Like WoW's spyware. But that one they mention in the their TOS (that no one ever reads) however
