hmm, not to b a "hater" but, i personally dont like rap very much... but thats just imho. I think some of it is good, but i cant remeber who they were bybut, most of what i've heard has been about bitches or hos or "my niggas ova here", or about how "i have more money than you", or partying all night long, and other such things. I personally feel that rap is one of the many reasons of our shallow society. how so many things are based on your money, and how you look, and other such things. which is yet another reason why i don't like rap. hmm, just my opinion, please try not to flame to hard

I agree Chipmunk777I've heard some ok rap but most of it is pretty messed up. I wouldn't mind it so much if I didn't here 7 year olds in the mall singin rap about muthaf**kers and bitchez - no 7 year olds should be talkin like that! like you said shallow society Im not really a hater either but I'd like it much more if some of them would change what they sing about. ohhh somebody think about the chillllldrrrren!!!! hehe

Enough of the boooolshit...lets keep it real!
****Warning, may contain harsh language, but I'm sincere****
Chipmunk, your view is sadly misinformed and left unqualified, a gross generalization. I HATE what the people in the mainstream have done to this genre, and that many people who weren't alive beforehand have little basis for comparison.
I'm not trying to ride you or anything, but materialist excess in rap/hiphop has been an unfortunate dominating feature in the mainstream since the mid-90s. It wasn't always like that, and there are plenty of people like myself who want the big money millionaires bullshit to just DIE.
In the 70s and 80s, there was more of a social message to rap, and even the materialist old school stuff still had an undercurrent of moral values. Even the early gangsta rap of the late 80s and early 90s was ABOUT something, or in reaction to social repression and economic disparities, though much of the content was raw and at worst, misogynistic.
Personally, I stopped buying mainstream rap when it was taken over by materialist assholes like Biggie and Puffy, and ESPECIALLY thug pretty-boys like Tupac. Fuck Hype Williams. Fuck the Vercatti you put on your Speghetti. The hell with frotin' sets; East, West, Dirty South....whatever.
If you are TRULY interested in some rap with a message, I'd be more than happy to run a list by you.
Damn, whatever happened to "peace"? Remember when people used to say it and mean it? Well, anyway...

Chipmunk glad to hear it!
It's good to see you've got a big heart.
Here's for starters...
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five: The Message is one of those greats you MUST listen to. Follow these names, and good things will come.
Public Enemy: You can't really go wrong with this group.
N.W.A. (Niggas With Attitude): Go for the early stuff, before Ice Cube leaves. REALLY raw stuff, very powerful. Don't let mom hear you listen to it!
Ice Cube: The once king of rap was the most powerful lyracist out there at one point. [I]Amerikkka's Most Wanted[I] and [I]Death Certificate[I] are my favorites.
Jeru the Damaja: Before he fell-off, he feuded with the Fugees and was a new hope for rap. Go for The Sun Rises in the East and The Wrath of the Math.
Heltah Skeltah (sp?), Nocturnal: Nice commentary on Gucci rappers.
The Roots, Iladelph Half-Life: This was the shit. Hands-down.
I'll look around for more, as I'm still learning about the wonders of music myself. Enjoy!"Perhaps to the soldier the civilian is the man who employs him to kill, who includes the guilt of murder in the pay-envelope and escapes responsibility."

I'm ALL about old skool instrumental funk and hip-hop...you know...the stuff from the James Brown Band, Curtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, The Gap Band...
Even some of the newer groups, though the lyrics don't attract me too much, have some nice beats to it.
