    Re: RAP offensive?

Haha, didn't really read around and just posted some artists that might break what the typical (and stereotypical) view on rap. Many of the pop-rap artists nowadays are quite smart business wise. They are able to feed to the crowd to make money. I'm not a fan of all of the modern "gangsta-rap" (e.g. Lil Jon, 50cent, etc.), but I don't see their music as really that negative - each artists ends up with their own style and it is quite unique. I do love much of the old freestyle (Stevie B, Lisa Lisa, etc), underground hip-hop (Immor. Tech...), old hip-hop (Slick Rick, Doug E Fresh..)

As to what impaction had said, I've listened to Daft Punk and they're pretty good (I'm more a fan of trance than techno, but it's still all good =]), but their style is too different to be compared to hip-hop music/rap. Also, hip-hop is not just the "music in the background." It is a description of an entire culture including art, poetry, dancing, life, etc. Rap music is just straight-up music itself with no cultural background. The music itself would only differ in that rap always contains the vocal element, while hip-hop can can be purely instrumental. A lot of rap/hip-hop songs don't promote the "cool to be stupid/shot/thugged-out" mentality (listen to some old stuff like Slick Rick and even the modern underground Immortal Technique). Hopefully, it can change you're mind ^_^... but whatever floats your boat ;].

As what WishMaster said, it is true that all rappers wish to be heard - for some it's a way to make money or a living, while for others it is more of a way to get political or express your opinion out to the public. Some do not turn out to becoming "sell-outs," but if given a chance a majority do (not a bad thing or anything... >.>) and then maybe their style switch to simply appealing the public. The messages of rap differs between each artist as they see fit. Also, it's pretty amazing comparing some of Eminem's older stuff to his new ones (pretty big change).

*edit* here's a section of a song that shows that rap lyrics aren't necessarily all "BS, money, hoes, etc":

[only the verses, Immortal Technique - You Never Know]
She was on her way to becoming a college graduate
Wouldn't even stop to talk to the average kid
The type of latina I'd sit and contemplate marriage with
Fuck the horse and carriage shit, her love was never for hire
Disciplined, intellectual beauty's what I desire
Flyer than Salma Hayek or Jennifer Lopez
Everyone told me, kickin' it to her was hopeless
At first I just thought, she didn't mess with broke kids
The thug niggaz always talking about, how they smoke kids
But the rich-sniff-coke kids got no play
"I'm not even interested" is what her body language would say
Everyone around the way, gave up trying to get in it
It didn't matter how good your game was, she wasn't with it
On the block, bitches was jealous, but wouldn't admit it
Talk shit, and deny to everyone that they did it
'Cause they regreted the long list of niggaz that they let hit it
And no one ever gave them shit except McDonald's and did-dick
Smoking weed with thoughts of envy, whenever they lit it
She smoked intelligently and they bit it, always trying to copy
But when they tried to use her vocab, they sounded sloppy
She had a style, all her own, respectful and pure
I was sick in the head for her, and there wasn't a cure

Her eyes are brown and beautiful, yet empty and sad
I used to talk to her occasionally, and she was glad
That I wasn't just another nigga trying to get in it
So every now and then we'd stop and talk for a minute
I didn't have a gimmick so the minutes turned to hours
On her birthday, I gave her a poem with flowers
Then I took her out to dinner after her cousin's baby shower
We talked about, power to the people and such
We spent more time together but it was never enough
I never tried to sneak a touch, or even cop a feel
I was too interested, in keeping it real
Perfectly honest and complete, she would always call me "carino,"
And never Technique, bought me a new book to read every 2 or 3 weeks
Forever changing the expression of my thoughts when I speak
It was because of her, I even deaded all of my freaks
She convinced me, to stop hangin' out on the streets
To stop robbin' and stealin', from people like you
Instead I took her out to the Apollo and the Bronxu
We sailed in Barrio (?) and the Metropolitan too
Got to the point when I was either with her or my crew
So I decided one day, to tell her my feelings was true
I couldn't live without her so I told her, facing my fears
But honey's only response, was a face full of tears
She could only sob hysterically, holding me tight
I tried to speak, but she wouldn't stop until I left sight
I felt like a moth who got himself too close to the light
Except I didn't burn, I turned cold after that night

I went on with my life, college and my career
Ended up locked up like an animal for a year
Where the C.O.'s talk to you like they were the overseer
Then I got sent to the hole, when my exit was near
At night in my cell, I'd close my eyes and I'd see her
Hold her close in my dreams, but when I woke she disappeared
Just an empty cell until the state gave me parole in the summer
came back, in tact and on track
But the fact of the matter, is I still felt cold
Even after my mother, hugged me, cryin' at home
My real niggaz would catch me thinkin', out of my zone
Fuckin' lots of different women, but I still felt alone
Relatively well-known around the New York underground
But I kept thinking of her and how we used to be down
The sound of her voice, and the beautiful smell of her hair
Though gone physically, somehow it was still there
I had to do something, because the shit was too much to bear
So I went and visited the building where she used to live
The world looks a lot different after you do a bid
The way your life done changed
While primitive minds (are) still stuck in the same game
Like her cousin who was on the corner slangin' cocaine
Stepped in the lobby and tapped the button next to her last name
Her mom buzzed me up and hugged me up, like a mother oughta
But her facial expression changed, when I asked about her daughter

She told me that there was a note for me, that was left behind
She had left it there waiting, for such a long time
I was inclined to ask about it but she brought it up first
I saw a tear swelling up in her eye, and then she cursed
She told me where the letter was and I started thinking the worst
Reversed my position, stepped over and opened the door
And sure enough there was an envelope with my name on the floor
"Nobody loves you more than me carino" is what the letter said

"By the time you get to read this, I'll probably be dead
But when you left in '97 a part of me went to Heaven
I thank God at least I got to know what love really was
But it hurt me, to see what true love really does
'Cause even though we never made love, you were all that there was
It was because I loved you so much that I had to make you leave
You made me doubt the way I thought, you made me want to believe
And then I slipped up, and I let you get close to me
It was hard to not be openly when people spoke to me
This was not the way I thought my life was supposed to be
Baby don't you see, I had a blood transfusion that left me with HIV
Hoped the end exists for me since late in 1993
    I died a virgin, I wish I could've given myself to you
I cried in the hospital because there was no one else but you
Promise that you'll meet me in paradise inevitably
No matter what, I'll keep your love forever with me"

What happened for the rest of the day is still a blur
But I remember wishing that I was dead, instead of her
She was buried on August 3rd
The story ends without a sequel
And now you know why Technique, don't fucking fall in love with people
Hold the person that you love closely if they're next to you
The one you love, not the person that'll simply have sex with you
Appreciate them to the fullest extent, and then beyond
'Cause you never really know what you got, until it's gone

(sorry if it's too long x].. can edit, just ask)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhh DAMN I remember that song. That was real talk. I haven't heard any Immortal Technique in too long, time to revisit iTunes. Back before hooks and throwbacks with fitted caps, geniuses like IT ripped the game open and made people think differently. I'm glad he's unsigned hype and not Top-40 trash.

Only a few rappers were able to do the Pop thing until the public accepted them, letting them do what they hungered for into the game. Uhm, I'm trying to think of some now, but I can't. Its 3am, I'll bee back when the sun comes up and I can think straight.

I think most of us that don't like it ARE forced to listen to it, specifically, in traffic from the dumbass with his new 50 cent or Em CD on his stereo playing for full blast (Thank you new Florida law though, for stating if we hear it 25 ft away, you get fined for $80!)

Its the fact of its popularity that basically has us listening to it someplace somewhere regardless of how much we want to stay away from it.

          Re: RAP offensive?

Ok fine, since logic and arguments won't work, I'll regress to flaming. *changes icon* What about the skinhead, hard rock, Fu** the world ingrates that feel that it is their sole purpose to make existence in public a living plethora of offensive sights and sounds with their multiple piercings, tatoos, and wild/crazy hair? "Look at me, I'm 18 years old and have nothing to live for, the world is an empty pit of sorrow, hatred and pain. I participate at my local coffee tavern's poetry nights twice a week to share my angst with the community."

Not too fun being shamefully stereotyped is it? Imagine how every hiphop/r&b appreciator feels everytime some narrow-minded individual, whose experiences with rap are limited to bad ones, and whom has no inclination to learn more about the culture and what rap means to the denizens of the inner-city, blasts their favorite mode of expression.

Believe it or not, the fact that we have rappers stimulates positive growth in neighborhoods such as the one I grew up in. Everytime I see a group of my peers huddled together, and I know it's because it's a freestyle battle and not the traffiking of drugs, it makes me realize that there is a positive direction my neighborhood can grow.

When a gang member stays up late at night writing lyrics in his bed, or on his way to school, and decides that he DOESNT want to be a Blood his whole life, and deals with the consequences of leaving the gang, that's a positive decision influenced by the many rappers who grew up in similar settings, and decided that they couldnt raise their kids, or have productive lives and fill their dreams while simply being products of the ghetto.

That's more than I can say for a lot of the rockers that are popular today, coming from two-parent, middle class homes. Try it before you knock it. And seriously, why would you be in Florida traffic with your windows down. If your car doesnt have AC, or if you don't have a music system loud enough to drown out the moron, that's not the problem of the rap community.

          Get a better car.

AC and windows don't drown out dumbasses with windows down and car steros set for full blast now, does it?

And I can pretty much car less what you listen to, if its some dumbass with a small vocab consisting mostly profanities, I pretty much don't want to have to listen to it while waiting for a light.

TY sir, for proving my point. It is obvious that the few seconds you spent at the light offended you in such a way, it it likely that you will kill any person who resembles a rapper. Of course, seeing as you have a narrow mind, it will probably be any African American in your way. I appreciate the warning, and I retreat to my neighborhood to warn my people.

It is a shame that society has lost such an individual as yourself to the rigors of the Anti-Rap crusade, but I do not doubt they will get over your departure in due time.

For making you uncomfortable for 30 seconds, I apoligize on behalf of every African American in the Florida region, and in the sport of seeking a non-violent solution, I will meet with each and every one of them, and kindly request they turn down their stereos.

Who says I said only rap? I said ANYTHING that is loud, annoying and profane I really can't stand, and given traffic, 30 seconds of one stoplight isn't saying that the slow movement will have you away from them- hell, its usually more of 5-10 minutes of an idiot until you finally manage to switch off roads, then its some other idiot. It gets pretty redundant fast.

And please, read a post before you say I can't stand the annoyance of rap playing for 10 minutes, its anything that fits that discription- I don't care if its metal, rap, or whatever crap you want to play for full blast.

edit: oh and on a side note:

For making you uncomfortable for 30 seconds, I apoligize on behalf of every African American in the Florida region, and in the sport of seeking a non-violent solution, I will meet with each and every one of them, and kindly request they turn down their stereos.
Who the heck said anything about turning to violence? Hell, half my friends are Black American (You are not half African, you are American, unless you just had a father or mother coming in from there. Get over it) as well as other mixes- hell, I am half Brazilian (Mother and her bloodline are actually from there, as opposed to someone with just bloodline, but then again, everyones got a bloodline from everyplace in this country), and good luck yelling over anyone's annoying music to turn it down, much less get a reply outside of turn of head, middle finger, turn back.

And as a minor side note, its actually most White Americans that play music at full blast, so that scratches that arguement as well.

edit: and as a side note before anything is said about the Africian American thingy I was arguing as a side arguement, I had recent relatives like great grandmothers to my great grandmothers that are dutch descent, and not even a great great grandmother on my mother's side that IS native brazilian- but you don't see me prancing around as Native Brazilian or Dutch American or European American.

Ha, you've counted the ethnic variety of friends you have. For shame.

Seriously though, traffic issues are not any reason to dislike rap. If we hated music for everytime it made us uncomfortable, I'd hate Germans for Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries.

And I hated rock music in the 5th grade, thought it was all about smashing guitars, jumping into crowds and moshing. Then I started listening to rock music. And I'm a better person today for doing so.

If you can find a rapper that isnt someone who has "a small vocabulary which consists of profanities" I'm sure you'll grow to like rap as a whole.

However, I do agree with you on one level, a lot of rap is just plain garbage. Whether it's Fabolous and his chipped tooth talking about how many girls blow him, or Tony Yayo doing this stupid shit with his hands, the amount of crap that rap listeners have to deal with is worse than the limited run ins you deal with.

I am not saying all rap is crap, just the stuff that people want to play on full blast which unfortunatly, mostly covers every thing that helps sterotype rap as that. I understnad there is your good and bad- and I have no problems with people that don't want to make up things about thier past and stay away from wanting to kill whoever. If its kept clean for the most part, then I have no problem with it what so ever- rap, hiphop, rock, whatever.

the rap that we lsiten to today isn't real rap (well that my opinion) see rap now days is just people like 50 or emenem whanting to do something there good at but don't care about what they rap about, old school rap will always be the best becasue its reel people raping about what is realy going on in life there people who grew up in the geto and raped about life and hopw hard it was i think it was an art befor the more famous people came

Yeah, I've changed my stance a lot over the past 2 months since this thread died. The Mid-90s were the best time for rappers, with ppl actually making stuff that was real.

Of course, I just stay away from Mainstream rap now. My favorite rappers are Lupe Fiasco, Styles of Beyond, Common, Mos Def, Tak and many many many more underground rappers.
