ATI will always be ATI regardless of the name change and it's easier to distinguish and get people to know what you're talking about. Most people still haven't had that sink in (or don't even know) so it's easier for all of us to just use "ATI", if anything, more of a brand nick.

The ATI cards all have been solid and I've had opposite experiences from you where it concerned games, like WoW, FFXI or Alien Swarm. nVidia used to give me weird glitches and issues and it still is with the latest Detonator running with GTX460 in FFXIV (I would get unexplainable crashes and the Windows logs always point to something with Detonator drivers, not the game client)

      Re: Building My 1st Computer

So i've finally ordered all my parts and everything is suppose to get here by thuresday. I was wondering about what temps the computer parts should be running at to be safe. Can anyone tell me? Thanks ^ ^

Under 50C is safe, but depending on your level of comfort you can sustain 70C pretty safely as well.

one last question, should i install the motherboard into the case and then the processor? or the processor into the motherboard and then into the case? does this even matter?

also my heat sink won't come in for a few days after my parts come in. .. . .can i go ahead and just put it together and install everything?

            No, not really.

You should consider how you install the CPU cooler, because, often, it requires a mount that's attached to the back of the motherboard. Some cases have slots that allow you to install it without removing the motherboard, but it's best to install the mount to the motherboard before installing the motherboard into the case.

So I've finally installed everything, but for some reason my computer is not booting up at all. It pretends to boot up for like a second as in my fans act like they are moving and then everything just stops. I've connected the 8 pin and 24 pin power to the motherboaard so im not sure what the problem is

Most likely you've connected something incorrectly, so it's booting up for a moment only to realize there's a problem and shutting off again. When I had this issue it was one of the wire connections located along the bottom of the motherboard. Your motherboard's manual should help with this, giving you pictures of where everything should go. If you're unsure, just unplug it and try to boot without it.

                  Re: Building My 1st Computer

Yea your right. I was spasing out hehe. So i've got my computer running and I'm using this software named CPUID HWMonitor. Under system Temperatures it has SYSTIN, CPUTIN, AUXTIN, SB, and NB. I was wondering what do these mean? Also my SB is around 45C and my NB is around 95C . . .so i'm kinda worried, but so far my processor are all under 40C

Nevermind, found out that NB stands for northbridge but why is it so hot? isn't that temperature unsafe?

Also when I'm booting up my computer it says

                  Virtual Disk
                  No Virtual Disk detected!

                  what does this mean?

Did you setup your BIOS? Also that seems very hot for Northbridge. Did the heatsink get dislodged? Is there anyway for you to go and have a look-see?

                      Re: Building My 1st Computer

I'm not sure how to setup my BIOS. I looked through it but didn't change with the settings much. I just finished dismantling the northbridge and it looked like there was barely any thermal paste so i cleaned it up and now i'm around 30-40 C.

Now I'm getting these weird voltage drops running from the motherboard software. It says my CPU voltage dropped to zero, DRAM voltage dropped to zero.....etc and then a second later my voltages are back to normal. . ... is this power failure?

Here is a log of the alerts I've been getting concerning voltages . .

It's probably just an oddity with the software you're using. With my computer, voltage levels do tend to be lower than what I'm settig it, but if it actually is zero volts then the computer would power down. CPU-Z and GPU-Z are both good pieces of software to monitor your hardware with.

Well, I'm not sure what to make of the log, but head into your BIOS and look for voltage settings. Check to see what they're set to, either auto or some specific voltage, and check what the v-droop is set to. There might be problems here, or the problem might be with the PSU.

Okay, so i tried to look for that voltage stuff under power, but I didn't see anything related to voltage settings, but I did find it under Extreme Tweaker. Here is what I see. .. .

                          IOH Voltage OCP: Enabled
                          DRAM Voltage OCP: Enabled
                          QPI Voltage OCP: Enabled
                          CPU Voltage Control: Absolute (VID)
                          CPU Voltage: Auto
                          CPU PLL Voltage: Auto
                          QPI/DRAM Core Voltage: Auto
                          IOH Voltage: Auto
                          IOH PCIE Voltage: Auto
                          ICH Voltage: Auto
                          ICH PCIE Voltage: Auto
                          DRAM BusVoltage: Auto

also next to the last 8 voltage types there are bolded numbers. I can adjust the voltaged by pressing + or -, but i'm not sure what to do here at all

If there's no apparent effect, then I wouldn't worry about this. Run Prime95 for a while to test it, or a few games.

well it seems weird to me because it only occurs when i start up FFXIV, otherwise i'm not getting any errors. so could it be that my video card is sucking up power and therefore causing these other parts of my computer to have a voltage drop? or something else?

                              alright, i'll give Prime95 a whirl.

thanks alot for being so patient with me, i really appreciate it ALOT.

My GPU is at a relative 30% at max settings with WoW and maybe 40% tops with tons of units in SC2. LoL and other games just don't impact it at all. Even FFXI. Go into FFXIV and that number jumps to 95% and temp goes up 20-30C.
