Extracting music files from an iPod

My Aunt and I have been trying to get some songs off her old iPod tonight without much luck. The closest we got was some program that would supposedly back up an iPod, but when we went to the restore feature it asked for money.

We're trying to get songs off her old iPod to stick on a new one she recently got. If anyone knows of some software that will help us do this without charging an arm and a leg, please let me know.
