Well I wouldn't recommend it for a person building their own pc for the first time. If you don't do it right, even though it may be fine to start off with, things can leak and ruin expensive parts.

this is a video on a mineral oil Aquarium PC, I'm gonna build one of these one day lol.

        Wow...

        A. they finally made one of these with a song I actually like.
        B. that's awesome. I like what he did with the large airstone at the end, too.

I have a friend who works on transformers around the Utah, Colorado and Nevada area. It's basically a big vat of mineral oil you step wires up or down in to modify the current. The things sure are loud if they leak and/or explode, though. Put off a nice little fireball you can see for miles, too.

The mineral oil cooling is essentially the same thing as a transformer, although you're moving a lot less current through it and it's not blowing any time soon. Non-conductive, won't ruin your parts. All in all a good little deal.

I'm curious what the heat transfer specs are. I know it's basically transforming the computer into a giant heat sink, I'm just curious where the heat transfer is coming in at and how well it moves that heat. Glass will have a slight insulating effect, and I don't see an area to directly lose the heat. With a water-cooled rig, you're basically blowing air over a radiator array with some fans while the tubes conduct it away from your components. Unless the glass itself is the transfer area, I'm curious how this setup works.

Custom PC by Puget Systems; Mineral Oil Submerged Computer here's a link to the website I got it from. There's quite a bit of useful information on there. I also like how they found out it runs at 88C under load so they added a water system and it dropped to 45C.

Ever felt an aquarium? Glass is an insulator, however it will get warmer then the surrounding air and bleed that heat off. It's slower then your copper heat sink but the surface area is much higher. Their heat transfer however would work better if they had a lid with vents or an open top, as the direct water to air contact would bleed off heat faster as the warmer oil will rise to the top.

The bubbles they added will also help as they will keep the oil moving.

The only problem I have with submerging the parts is they had fans still active. Those little motors were not made for moving dense oil, they were made for moving air. They're just going to end up breaking.

There's another video where they explain that all moving parts shouldn't be submerged, so what they did was put them on top of cups that matched in circumference... I think it's in the video I posted.

Submerging PC's is more of a gimmick then anything else anyway, it doesn't really keep things any cooler then a good fan and heatsink in a well thought out case does.

All I saw in any video you posted was tubing for 'traditional' water cooling. All that is is something like the radiator in a car.

They provide updates every so often, looks like that computer has been running for over a year without the fans breaking. However, there is still a chance that it could happen in the future.

So you want to replace a part and you have to deal with that goo? Sorry the "cool" factor is outweighed by the mess factor. Like Mhurron said, the fans will probably burn out faster than a normal fan and, for me, replacing it would suck!

Why are the fans even necessary/helpful in that situation?

To be perfectly honest, it would talk a little more thought but the mess would easily be handled. You might have a problem selling or storing old, oily hardware though.

Properly, all the cooling parts inside the mineral oil should be passive.

Next, go down to your local pet store and get a filter system or something else to cycle the oil. This is your active cooling system. Don't use the carbon filters though. Really, it would probably need to be modified, but by pulling out oil and cycling it back in, you could keep the temperature of it all lower then if you let it just sit there and heat up. That or get a water cooling system with the pipes and modify that. You'd really need a fan on the outside of the tank for this, so it takes away from the completely silent.

And get some gravel (I think they did this later) and some plastic fish. Make it look good.

Just to reiterate in case someone out there missed it, this is a very advanced project.

The liquid is just like the air. Imagine your computer with no fans in it. The air would be stagnant and heat up quickly. Moving the liquid with fans gives it a degree of cooling.

Mineral oil goes rancid does it not? EDIT: Ok I did some looking mineral oil does not go rancid, even food grade mineral oil. Though after reading up on it, mineral oil is a tad bit scary. LOL

No it does not, it's not an organic compound. Unfortunately this means it will not make your computer smell like french fries.

Natural conductivity of heat of liquids combined with the density of the oil slowing them to double digit rpms makes the fans almost completely useless. The bubbles they added later are actually doing more for heat exchange then any fan in there is.

Well, if thats the case, I wouldn't bother with any fans. It would clean up the look of it too. I agree that the top should be vented........in ALL computers, imo.

A set up like this wouldn't work for someone like me though. It's unique but its like caviar.....an acquired taste.

Never before has mankind been so able to accurately pinpoint the exact sentence that killed a thread.

On fans, do they even make PSUs without them; besides the very very small 'no moving parts PC' things? I suppose the same thing goes for CPUs, but would you even want a fan on your CPU for this? It seems like it would be kind of pointless, when the entire environment is a giant heatsink.
