  • Firefox 3 Launched

Today, dubbed Firefox Day, is the official release of Firefox version 3. Head to Spread Firefox if you're interested in learning more about the effort to set a world record, and to download your copy of FF3.

    /shameless plug

    -------------------

Edit: Now that FF Day is over, though FF3 seems to be faster and more stable, I would recommend holding off on downloading it (if you haven't already) IF you use a lot of extensions you might miss having. The majority of add-ons and themse have been broken by FF3 and will not work until they get updated. If that's a non-issue for you, it's not like there aren't still plenty more add-ons that DO work.

Edit2: According to spreadfirefox.com, there were over 8million downloads in 24 hours. It has yet to be announced if it was enough to set/break a world record.

Installed. I don't see too much of a diff-- Oh shit! Look at how sharp that back button looks like!

I do like how the bookmarks are in the drop-down arrow, but I'm still gonna have to do some searching around to see what's so different.

Got it myself. Very impressed; I hope that memory leak bug is fixed this time around.

The thing that got me by surprise was the new way they did the visited link history of the dropdown menu.

And they really took a step up and made the images transparent in the transition of you dragging your images from the browser to the desktop.

So far those are the visible new things I see.

Haha. Firefox 3 just got the Colbert bump.

I started using the Firefox 3 beta months ago and haven't touched Firefox 2 since because 3 is much more convenient, in my opinion anyways. Now to try the released version.

Kinda true and kinda not. If you mean the simple majority, yes, probably; many extensions have been abandoned. HOWEVER, if you're talking about the plugins a single person uses, because you're more likely to use popular ones and those are more likely to be taken care of, it's not really the case. I have 25 plugins, and only four of them aren't Firefox 3 compatible yet. Overall, FF3 is a huge improvement, and most plugins you lose can be replaced.
